Yes, but I think the online presence was required to make this hunt more interesting and attractive. After all, the purpose of the hunt was to see if you can be tracked down by the digital trail you leave behind.
>> It amazes me how much hardware and power has to be thrown at the problem to solve it while nature can create a self-organizing machine that only requires material input of raw mice and lasagna.
But at the same time, there are two big differences:
1. Nature started bottom up (small to big - one cell to multicell), and it took millions of years to 'produce' a cat.
2. We have started top down (big to small - first achieve the goal and go smaller from there with newer technology), and it took us few decades to get there.
On related note... Think about this - it took millions of years before nature could come up with a brain the size of cat's with that capability. We have achieved something similar in few decades. When you ignore all the moral arguments and just focus on technology, it is something of an achievement.
Given sufficient time, with advancement in technology, we should be able to shrink the size and also make it more powerful with better hardware.

But the whole point of TFA is to be ambiguous and somehow prove an open source and free mobile OS as something less desirable. So, a clever spin and you have got 'less for free'.

I thought we were talking about Google here, not Apple.
Well, at least you still have a sky, and a chance to see meteors when weather permits. With the light pollution around NY/NJ in the USA, you can't see one until it's about to explode on you.
I was amazed to see how many stars you can see with your naked eyes when I visited the 'dark' continent of Africa few years back.
Brilliant! I would not have been able to put it in a better way.
Of course, Ubuntu or any other distro based on Linux has its own learning curve. And I would not (and do not) advise it to everybody.
But when discussing this with/. crowd, I expect a certain level of computer-savvy-ness, and their ability to learn doing things in different ways. It is indeed a tall wall (no matter how much 'desktop ready' it may feel), but then, I set myself up in a way that I know I have a way out with Linux (i.e. not building a collection of gadgets which would not work with a central system at my home). If this includes sacrificing some toys which are 'cool', and 'hip', so be it. As long as I get my ends met with different means, and I know how to deal with the 'different' means, I am fine with it (bud would not advise it to any or every body).
Hey, to each its own. I value my freedom to do whatever I want with devices I have paid from my hard-earned cash and stay clear from Apple products (or for that matter, any , which will lock me in).
But I found parent's point backwards - just because he has locked himself into a particular system does not give him any right to cry about other systems that do not support his toys. Since when it is Linux or open source's fault that itunes/ipod/iphone are not compatible with their OS?
>>What's to stop a bad application from bypassing those safeguards?
Whatever happened to Apple's policy of babysitting their users by allowing only certain apps? Wouldn't this application exactly the kind of crap users should be protected against?
It's been claimed on/. by appple apologists that that's the way apple protects its users. But apple is actually doing is protecting its pockets by banning applications which takes business away from them or AT&T - while such apps are in the wild - blessed by Apple.
Apparently, having the word 'iphone' in the app name is harmful, but allowing some other app to steal user data is okay - as long as it does not have the name 'iphone' in the app name.
>> Science can't disprove God and nor can believers 'prove' him. It's called faith.
Science does not have time to disprove something for which no proof of existence is given. Because, there is NO burden to disprove something until there is a proof in first place.
But then again, why am I trying to bring logic in here? Perhaps, because you tried to rationalize faith.
I, for one, have. Not because of such stupid tactics of the studios, but because I developed better tastes and developed some critical thinking to differentiate a heavily marked product from a very good product - by doing some research myself.
In fact, heavier the advertisement of a product, more cynical I am about it. This includes almost all major studio releases from Hollywood, all the new music from the big labels and all the gadgets I buy (I stay away from Apple for multiple reasons - marketing is one of them, though not the only reason).
Marketing is, in theory, a good way to inform people about new product. But in practice, they are just selling you water they have bottled from the tap as it is. I have found my ways to get the content I want (netflix has lovely collection of a lot of indie/foreign/documentaries), Amazon and Mangnasound carries enough small/unknown artists I can explore. There are gadgets outside ipod/iphone which meet my requirements. There are enough tools available to sample stuff before you commit yourself.
In short, if enough people apply their own thoughts and not buy into marketing drivel, there are enough choice.
>> but they are a lame, rusting, evil company that does not have your best interest in mind. Don't reward their convenient use of opensource software, and don't consider them to be better than Microsoft
For me, the fact that they are better than Apple is good enough.
Yeah, man. Parents these days!! I mean, they had to go and give birth to a child in that country just so that when he grows up and creates a company, he will get tax benefits!

I hope not.
But they definitely know WHY they had to do it.
Are you saying that the article does not take that into account? That it ignored a bit of facts in order to push out it's own opinions??
OUTRAGEOUS!
