The only thing I can think of is perhaps RSS makes syndication TOO simple. Perhaps fewer people would be requesting updates on the news (or whatever) from a site if they didn't offer the feeds. I mean, without RSS, many users would rather go without the updates than access the site and get the images and everything.

That is the only argument I can come up with and I think it's fallous.

  4. Not a problem with RSS.. just humans. on Is RSS Doomed by Popularity? · · Score: 4, Interesting

RSS feeds are meant as a way to strip all the nonsense from a site and offer easy syndication, right? Basically, present the relevent news from a full-fledged webpage in a smaller file size? If such is the case, this isn't an RSS issue, really. I see it more as a bandwidth issue. I mean, people are going to get their news one way or the other.. either with a bunch of images and lots of markup via HTML or with just the bare minimum of text and markup via RSS. I would prefer RSS over HTML any day of the week! But perhaps RSS makes syndication TOO simple. Thus everyone does it and that eats additional bandwidth that normally would be reserved for those browsing the HTML a site offers.

And you could implement bans on people who request the RSS feed more than X times per hour as someone suggested (Doesn't /. do this?), but I don't think that gets around the bandwidth issue. I mean, those who want the news will either go with RSS or simply hit the site. Again, RSS is the preferred alternative to HTML.

So here's my suggestion.. go to nothing but RSS and no HTML!

On top of that, if he domain truly weas registered back in 2000 as a previous poster noted, I'd say Apple was screwed and that, if Apple wanted the domain, they should make him an offer he can't refuse. Yeah.. I hear this every year, too. Sadly, it seems nothing is being done to counteract the trend. Apparently people in the NEA don't read Slashdot.

As far as the stigma of being a nerd 'cause you're good at math goes, my experience is that it is a load of shit. More accurately, the stigma comes from being socially inept. If yuo cannot interact with others your age, you will be made fun of. If you happen be good at math, that will be what is used to defame you. I have been good at math since my third grade multiplication competitions. Did I ever get beat up over it? No. Why is that? 'Cause I was friends with all of the "cool" people in addition to being smart. I played football at recess, I listened to all the cool music, and I was good at math. I seem to remember my friends being more jealous than anything. There were other students good at math (and other subjects) that got made fun of regularly but they were the so-called "nerds" 'cause they didn't mesh with the crowd.

Looking back, its obvious that kids are shallow, but hey.. it is what it is and if you don't want to be made fun of, you damn well better fit in.

Being made fun of has nothing to do with being good at math. Being good at math is just more likely if you're not too social.

Yet they are important to helping us understand things such as quantum mechanics (and eventually, quantum computing and cryptography), string theory, and other important scientific theories.

And so it is with Mars and space exploration. There will come a time when Mars will be vital to humanity.
