This is probably a dumb question, but who buys these things? I assume that they're not in use in the enterprise or high-end workstation market. Do rich kids really spend $1K on a cpu and $500 on a graphics card? I would have thought they blew their monthly allowance on stickers for their "R" series rice rocket.
I have to assume that EE's are extremely limited in quanity and released for marketing purposes. Ping me if that's untrue.
I guess John Dillinger was subsidizing all the banks he didn't rob?
Only if banks were required, by law, to be robbed by JD.... Sort of like taxes. Getting it now?
what about not applying for the tax credit if you don't want it
It would be like not declaring charitable donations. All is well till audit time comes up, then they're like, "why didn't you declare these tax breaks", and you're like, "I do not feel it is prudent for the government to subsidize private industry". You'll get an awkward 10 second pause, followed by the worst three months of your life as they audit you for the last 5 years income.
Any tax break of government subsidy is a bad thing. It gives the government control over the direction of any FLOSS that takes the money (just like schools that take federal money). It also puts you in a strange position if the software that you are developing violates one or more of your countries laws. I'm not willing to change the direction of my projects just for a subsidy.
Screw intelligent robots! Screw AI in general. We already have it. It's called the human brain. Let's stop working on computer AI (as it applies to inteligent robots) and start figuring some of the following things.
1: How to stop the brain from degenerating from the age of 30 onwards
2: How to connect the brain to robotic limbs (direct attach)
3: How to disconnect the brain from the body (o2 source, nitrition, remove byproducts of metabolism etc)
Tah-dah, no more old people. Just robotic bodies with human brains. I bet inner-city americans will pimp theirs out with chrome and ground effects.
Looks like someone beat you to it Damn Californians! Leave it to a state where weed is practically legal, but smoking (even in your own home) isn't (well soon anyway).
I'm not sure what "engage with open source developers" means... Not just because they used the word "with", which was unnecessary and hard for me to parse. It doesn't necessarily mean that they're itemizing and reporting the defects. It may be some foo-foo conference where they review coding practices and plug some form of SDLC CM/EM/UAT crap. I hope that is not the case, and that we actually get something constructive of ot this. Most of us have been though ISO/Six Sigma/Sas70 audits before and seen nothing worthwhile come of it.
This study would be extremely valuable if they had submitted BZilla bugs for each and every defect they encountered. It's hard to tell from the article whether they did or not. One thing that I have learned from running ~arch in Gentoo is that if you don't submit bugs, things aren't going to get fixed.
I had a throw-away G3 iMac 233 in my office with 160MB of ram and a 6GB drive. For the heck of it, I installed Gentoo with xorg and Enlightenment e16. Seemed to do most stuff fine (terminal, xmms, firefox). Getting DRI/DRM to work with the rage3D gfx chip was a bit of a PITA, but aside from that, it wasn't so bad.
What problems did you encounter with the G4? When you say that it's hopeless running Xorg, do you really mean Xorg, or Gnome/KDE?
Babelfish doesn't offer a translation for "Microsoft"
You can convert english to Japaneese, then Japaneese back to english. This will convert MS english to American english.
From TFA Those guys [SCEA] tend not to share their plans with us, so we pretty much develop our own strategy based on our vision and where we want to go. Leaders can't afford to be reactors. We have a very good plan and we will execute that.
The problem is that some employers fail to recognize that eight full hours of productivity isn't a realistic goal
You've got to be F'ing kidding me! With a work ethic like that, it's no wonder the bubble burst. I'd love to see your resume, and whether or not you've held a solid job within the past 8 years.
I'm quite keen for GSX to be free or cheap, it'll then make cost sense to consider a VMWare strategy
You may wish to hold off for a bit untill VMware decides to fix the PDflush/cache issue with newer linux kernels. Having the host take a crap every time multiple guests untar large files is beginning to give me the red arse.
Personally, I am not to excited about this (haven forgotten about MS a while ago). The real question is, who is going to be using this new browser, since reasonable alternatives with better features have been around for over a year. Seriously, who still uses IE (other than 80% of the internet surfing public). Are RSS and tabbed browsing really going to entice people to switch, or is MS going to Masquerade a product release as a "security update"?
Careful with the 60K virus comment. It's more like 4K when you consider that butPlug.a is the same virus as butPlug.b through butPlug.z. Heck, I could make 60K linux in the same amount of time that it takes me to write one. I honestly have little problem with the graphic UI of windows. It's no worse then FBDev. I do have a problem with MShtml being in the dependancy tree of "everything" though. I think ActiveX is an abortion. I think that the win32 API could use a ton of improvment.
At this point in time, I have largely forgotten about MS and their software. I gave up on them 2 years. It had nothing to do with security, it was simply that their software would not fuction in the enterprise for any respectable duration. I do have an old laptop with win98 on it. Latest updates, no AV (no need for one since I only use it for TS and am behind a firewall).
I'm not certain what the big deal is. Most OS vendors do not ship with an AV solution. I'm not certain I would want to have an AV solution integrated into the OS. Can anyone comment as to why MS 'would' integrate an AV solution?
But I thought that violation of the DMCA was a criminal act, and not a civil tort like generic copyright violations. I guess I'll have to go re-read it.
There wasn't racism in IT hiring practices to begin with. The article implied that there was by using the word "still". Please refrain from calling people in my profession racist (I really don't appreciate it).
I believe that the "Home and Entertainment" division at MS handles all of the supply chain managment and reverse logistics at MS (well, most of it). They should have a handle on the problem within 48-72 hours if there was a bad parts run (a specific part, from a specific manufacturer, from a specific date range). There are a lot of eyes on this release over at MS.
We should probably lobby to make it a crime for Jack's church to preach to people under the age of 18, since it obviously causes deviant behavior in adulthood. This church's "social conditioning" seemingly teaches children that suing people you don't like, insulting judges, teaching religion in science class, and general ass-hattery are OK in the modern world. We need to "protect the children" from this sort of de-sensitization "abuse".Parents also need to be hold accountable when they volunterily relinquish control of their teenagers to this "inhumane" religious institution. The punishment bieng life "in Alabama".

A tax cut ("credit" in this case) is not a subsidy.
Actually, that's exactly what it is, unless the meaning of subsidy has changed in the last 24hrs.

Someone ping me when...
1: Realtec has a $19.99 add on card with technology
or
2: It automatically comes with my next motherboard purchase
Untill that time, I'm plenty fine with the 6mbits/sec that I'm currently getting from the my internet provider.
