    It's not silly at all. The word 'the' means 'the one you know I'm talking about when I say *the*'. Like if i said to my girlfriend "the cat wants out", she knows i'm talking about our cat without me saying "our cat, named Bozo, wants out". Our sun is THE SUN. It is not the only sun, but it is THE SUN. i'd even go so far as to say it is TEH SUN.

    The Sun = our sun, you know which sun i'm talking about. "The Sun is a mass of incandescent gas that keeps Earth warm."
    A sun = some random, non-specific sun. "A sun will influence the temperature of the planets orbiting it."
    Suns = ALL suns. "Suns provide warmth to their planets."
    Sol = A star, a sun, our sun.

  3. Ignore State Lines on Diebold Voter Fraud Rumors in New Hampshire Primaries · · Score: 1

    Something that might make all of this easier is for federal elections to be run by the fed and ignore state lines. Each district would be a geographic radius or block that crosses state lines as needed to make the districts more equal in population.

    i would also trade the senate's and HoR's powers, then turn the senate into a PR body. People vote for a party in a nationwide referendum every four or so years. The % of votes that party wins is the number of seat they win. If the Liberepbulicrats get 22% of the votes, they get 22 seats. This gives small parties some influence if they have even 1% of the population behind them. The senate functions mostly as a check against the HoR and PotUS, by pushing or stopping legislation as needed. i think that would give more people their own voice in government, or a more nuanced voice than LEFT or RIGHT.

    But of course IANA(Political Scientist).

    Que the anti-federalists.

  4. Re:Don't overlook people skills on What Skills Should Undergrads Have? · · Score: 1

    i recommend David DeAngelo's Double Your Dating (for the dudes in the thread)*. How To Make Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, is also note worthy.

    Socializing is a SKILL. You can learn it, practice it and improve it the same way as you do any skill. Flirting, dating and romancing are also skills. A guy can add two points on his 1 to 10 rating just by being socially aware, confident and in control. Such traits have benefits beyond the bar and bedroom. Emotions are contagious. If you are sad and scared you will bring others down. If you are happy and confident, the moths will come to your flame.

    "Think of the people you've met you you've thought were assholes, arrogant, insecure, and fake. Chances are, they were none of the above; rather they just came off that way because they didn't know how to properly handle the nuances of social behavior."

    It could also be that !X people feel insecure when they are around X people. Where X is attractive, confident, wealthy, smart, secure etc. If you are a glowing beacon of awesomeness, your lack of light is all the more apparent. People insulate themselves against this by creating a story about their betters being fake or secretly unhappy. Anything to prevent them having to admit their own "faults" or worse yet, having to DO something about them. (i do realize we're talking about different things, your comment just brought this to mind)

    This is a variety of loser/victim mentality. A specific flavor of it is "fat girl" mentality. "See that skinny little girl with her hair all up and expensive clothes? She's probably high maintenance, spends all of her free time at the gym, starves herself or is otherwise unhappy". Some or all of that MIGHT be true, or it might not be. The fat girl compliments herself on being "real", instead of taking on the challenge of improving her situation. Note the use of 'little' and 'skinny'. When someone says "your little (game/job/girlfriend/etc), they are being dismissive. Skinny is supposed mean 'too thin'. Fat girls use the word skinny to describe healthy, attractive women so as to avoid responsibility and to say there is something wrong with the prettier woman. There are similar victim mentalities for race and social status. You can replace fat girl with any number of mindsets, i'm not trying to pick on them.

    * DYD turned me from a guy who could get 2 girlfriends a year to one who could get 2 girlfriends simultaneously. It also helped me figure out many other things about (my) life in general.

Then teams could make their own content, these could be stand alone modules/persistent worlds, or they could be interconnected. i imagine there would be a hub world, a city full of doors and gates that lead to different worlds. WoW is the M$ of MMORPGs. Other games fail under its shadow because no one wants to leave the big party because no one else does. i dislike all of these that i've played so far. They are all pretty much the same; grinding, farming, scavenging, twinking and pointless PVP. That's way my timesuck of choice is PlanetSide(MMOFPS). You start the game able to just about anything a veteran can have. The experienced players just have more options/flexibility. i think part of our interest in violent media is that we are wired to be ready for conflict and violence, but our lives are by and large safe and peaceful. Someone growing in a rough and tumble life might have less interest in violent media (assuming they have time for it). We play at killing (sports, video games, movies) because we don't get to/have to in the real world. i often feel a sort of contained rage or death wish... something in me wants some jerk to push me too far so i can mutilate him.

    What i wish would happen is some sort of evolution. That we would, as a species, realize that resources and mates are not scarce and that we will rededicate resources to more enlightened pursuits.

    pr0n is much the same, through porn stars we get to have sex with different partners, as often as we like, with partners far more attractive and willing to indulge our fantasies. Real life sex is rarely as exciting as pr0n. Plus, pr0n doesn't judge you and won't disappoint or be disappointed.

    Is this an accurate model?

    ++++
    i ship a package to you. i pay FedEx to pick up the package. FedEx can take the package only so close to you, because UPS owns the roads to your house. FedEx doesn't pay UPS to deliver the package, so UPS charges you to get the package that last few miles.
    ++++

    Or do they charge to receive because they have us by the short and curlies?

    Personally, i'd rather do away with FedEx and UPS and just have a public service. But that means no dividends, so that idea will be received like a loud fart at a funeral. People also seem to think that competition means lower prices and better service. How's that working out for us? What is the cheapest plan you can get these days. 45$ a month? Remember kids: Sprint's profit = how much they over charged you and how much service they weaseled out of giving you so they could give more money to people who already have more than you. Grumble grumble bourgeoisie grumble.

    Can i please have a BASIC cheap service? i make about 7 calls a week, most of which are "Are you ready to go home?". i send maybe 3 text messages a month. My current plan has accumulated over 10,000 roll over minutes. Money shat down the drain. Pay as you go plans suck because if you don't buy a new card every month (which is little different that a standard plan) you LOSE YOUR NUMBER. So i'd have to change phone numbers several times a year. i'm not a 13 year old girl, i prolly don't talk 5000 minutes a month in PERSON let alone on the phone.

  25. Re:So remember... on UN Says Tasers Are a Form of Torture · · Score: 1

    So the solution is not to get rid of tasers, but to make their firing require as much accountability as firing their side arm. Paperwork, inquiry and if necessary suspension, fines and prison time. There's movement in that direction already with all the negative press. Excessive force should not depend on the tool, but on the harm inflicted, the threat to bystanders, threat to the cop and the crime involved. Shooting a shop lifter is excessive. Tasing a mad gunman 15 times is not.

    How about this: To gain certification to wield a taser, the cop must experience it. If they know what it is like, they might show more restraint in using it.

    Hey, UN. A bullet in the gut or kneecap is painful too.
