While Linux is gaining a little bit of ground on the desktop, I think it will take another 5-10 years before the average joe will be able to switch. I figure in that amount of time most applications will be web-based and subscription based and therefore able to run on any platform. At that point, why NOT run Linux, BSD or OSX? You won't be tied down to some proprietary application on a dying platform.
We realize that all Slashdotters hate Microsoft by now. I think bashing their products at every turn is a bit mean-spirited. I agree that Vista is a pile of useless crap right now, but Office 2007 has probably doubled my productivity by simple little features added since 2003. Also I find now that I've gotten used to the new interface, it makes a WHOLE LOT more sense than the prior interface. There are plenty of reasons to upgrade to 2007.
Where it says "US & Canada Only" it means only choose a State/province from the list if you are in those countries. I'd imagine that if there are choices for tons of other countries in the list then that means they ship there...
The Acer Ferrari has features that the IBM Thinkpads lack, in terms of multimedia. Sure the thinkpads are SOLID business notebooks, but to get all the other neat multimedia functions you would have to go to the Lenovo line, and Lenovos are pieces of junk. Acer is a very solid manufacturer, but I am guessing your scope of "top of the line" doesn't look past brands sold in the USA. Acer is HUGE overseas.
Were I running Windows, I could probably still run Word 2 from 15 years ago. office 97 does not install in Windows XP (you can hack at some files and whatnot and get it working i'm told, but it wont work out of the box)
So you DO have the same upgrade path with a PC as a Mac.
if you think Windows XP is more demanding than Windows 2000 than you are retarded. Many optimizations were made moving from 2000 to XP. Running 2000 on a 500mhz celeron with 256mb ram was poky at best. Running Windows XP on the same hardware is probably about 10% faster if you turn off the pretty stuff. They optimized the code and it shows, bigtime. XP will actually run better on older hardware than 2000, read up sometime.
it's not an issue of running NEW SOFTWARE in OLD Operating Systems, it's an issue of running NEW SOFTWARE in a NEW Operating System:)
Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Dreamweaver and all the important applications that Mac users need for business, still don't have a universal binary. Maybe Apple should've given developers more time
once they are flashed it voids the warranty -- not necessarily a problem for a Radeon 7000, but if you wanted bleeding-edge graphics cards you'd probably want to keep warranty in tact
You are mistaken on the video card. The video cards for macs have a different firmware or something that prevents people from using cheaper "pc" video cards in their place. Granted memory and cpu upgrades are no problem now, but you cannot change out a motherboard in a Mac, which means when it starts getting slow, sell it and get a faster one, which I feel is pretty STUPID.
easy? no
;)
impossible? no

from what i hear osX runs great on a 945 chipset motherboard and pentium d
Frylock: You are not a prophet, Shake! So stop this madness!
Shake: Frylock, I cannot do that. God hath commanded that I do his will or the Earth will blow up!
Frylock: My ass he did!
Meatwad: God's gunna blow up the world?
Shake: Oh yeah, brutha! He ain't too pleased with YOU in particular, Meatwad!
Meatwad: ME?!
Shake: Oh yeah.... He saw you touchin' yourself--
Meatwad: I don't touch myself!
Shake: In the bathroom!
"there is a problem with your registry, click here to get a NEW BLACKBERRY from Cingular!"
A quick scan shows that they are running Solaris 8 guess they are living in the past :)
Flash 9 is out for linux and runs fine I think the gamers are going to start gravitating towards consoles in the next 10 years as well.

you are paying the same and not getting the $100 value of xp or so

thanks to this new technology, we will find out that there are numbers hidden in Tubgirl image, they hold the key to the meaning of life!

i wonder if the firefox start page counts as a visit to Google
if so, that probably had a lot to do with the numbers as well

I would use Mythtv if it supported half of the devices at full quality that I need to use. Windows MCE is leaps and bounds ahead for now...
and yes, i've used both

before you say "omg it's a MS benchmark it's biased" no. all the numbers were gotten by an independant research test lab.

XP Pro will support dual dual-core opterons (four cores) just fine --- i think you are misinformed

never had a problem with application compatability in Windows
