    .. evil. This is nothing new. They've had the same predatory behavior for well over 2 decades now.

    It's hard for a lot of us to accept, because nearly everyone here owns an apple product they genuinely enjoy (I own several myself), but the truth is Apple is evil.

    Parent is a troll, or a fanboy, or both. Can't decide, don't care.

    I for one wouldn't train my kids on niche machines just because I think they might turn in to geeks like me. Train them on machines they'd run in to every day, and later if they express an interest, move them in to unix and/or linux. Don't stuff it down their throat because you happen to have a fanboy opinion. Use common sense, and think about practicality.

    Your cryogenic machine will be unplugged by some of the 78 trillion inhabitants of earth and your body will be used for food. Power shortages will have already rendered your flesh ripe and unpalatable, but you will be consumed regardless.

    This is why instead of investing in cryogenics, I'm investing in soylent green.

    I'd follow the money and look at where it leads. It wouldn't surprise me to find that this guy is in the pocket of a coalition of uranium mining companies are attempting to scare people in to paying more for uranium. It worked pretty well for oil and gas companies after all.

    It's the same story all the time. We're running out of X, Y, and Z. We will run out of it by . When that time rolls around, somehow we're still using the stuff, and it doesn't seem to be that we're running out. It's just more expensive now, because of all the hype given to the idea that it's running out.

    I'm not saying that we couldn't possibly be running out of something non-renewable, but every time a scientist cries wolf and is wrong, it makes it harder to believe the next time.

    And then you'd have browser syndrome, where getting a beneficial change to the API takes 5 years, and isn't adopted by everyone for at least a decade. Meanwhile the innovation in the market becomes slow and stagnant.

    Software by committee is a horrible idea.

    You're not actually supposed to clean your inner ear. Your outer ear, yes, but putting crap inside your ear is stupid, and can seriously damage your hearing.

    Your ears have natural mechanisms for removing excess wax.

    We use this where we work, it's incredibly flexable and works well. While we do have ruby apps, we have apps in other languages as well, and use capistrano/git for deploying everything.

    Frankly though, I wouldn't deploy anything to amazon's hardware due to privacy/security concerns. It might just be me tinfoil hatting it up, but when you spend a quarter million in development time and resources on something, the last thing you want to do is run it on some other companies' machines.

    Except then you have another terrible search solution which isn't meant for the amount of data you'd find on a large server. Worse, you have an operating system that is terrible as a server solution.

    On the other hand, you could just use a unix/linux distro of your choice, and beagle (http://beagle-project.org) - which is meant for indexing large amounts of data and has many clients some of which can remotely access it.

    ...unfortunately. One of them has proven itself to be much cheaper to maintain (basically zero dollars), and with the ability to continue using it even after 10 years of age. I won't say which one, because I don't want to get flamed, but I bet you can guess.

    It's nice to hear your PC is still running fine. I have an old PPC ball-and-stick mac here running OS X 10.5.8 that isn't even 10 years old yet which runs dog slow and is hard (and getting harder all the time) to find software for.

    If you own a mac and a windows machine (I'll avoid the term 'PC' here, as it's a stupid connotation all on it's own), you own both. This makes you both a mac and a windows user. I don't understand why this article attempts to split the camps in to "mac users who happen to own windows machines" and "windows users who happen to own macs".

    Bottom line here is use whatever you prefer to use for whatever task you prefer it, and stop turning it in to this kind of a silly "one side of the fence or the other" kind of debate.

    Well, judging from the people who were exposed to the million dollar variant, I would say it works well, or at least, well enough to cause the symptoms they're saying it will cause.

    Of course, one could dawn their tinfoil hat and say it was all staged - I myself have never been exposed to the million dollar bedazzler personally.

    Seriously. It's a tip calculator, and a clock. These are the kinds of applications we can do with less of anyway. FOSS software is rife with these small and pointless programs. I agree such software is great as learning tools for others to get a foothold with when writing their own more complicated software, but they're hardly worth getting your panties in a twist over. Palm OS comes with a clock, and last I checked, is bundled with a calculator.

    I could understand if it were something truly useful that added to the platform, but these programs do not.

    It is not the quality of the platform in question but rather the developer mindshare. iPhone is building up greater mindshare so more developers will aim for that platform. It does not matter how good your console is if nobody makes games for it.

    More developers doesn't mean good or even better games. Also, trying to make it sound like consoles have no developers is silly.

    Apple doesn't even make a device which competes in these markets. Some people may like their games on the iphone/cell phone - but at the end of the day, it's an inferior device to game on. Some gamers might use these devices to get a quick fix when they're away form home, but serious gamers will always go back to their PC or console.
