  1. Apple Rokr All Over Again on Why the Google Android Phone Isn't Taking Off · · Score: 1

Google repeated Apple's mistake. They relied too much on carriers and let them dictate the terms. Without Google in the name no one is going to take notice. The Andriods phones turned out to be what people claim the iPhone to be, a toy which people buy to look edgy. While Google flounders around Apple is 3 generations ahead and poised to take the world by storm again when the iPhone goes cross-carrier.

AT&T didn't "make this possible." They agreed to Apples deal which basically says "bend over AT&T."

Oh? So if AT&T said no Apple was just going to build their own cell phone network? I don't think so. Apple's terms were they didn't want to be restricted in what they can do with their phone. That scared the hell out of everyone. But AT&T took a chance and it paid off big time. Every other carrier turned Apple down cold. There is nothing "fanboy" about this.

  3. Doesn't Anyone Remember? on FCC To Probe Exclusive Mobile Deals · · Score: 4, Interesting

Apple first went to Verizon but was turned down. AT&T was the only company that would let them do the iPhone, so they got it. Now everyone is crying foul because AT&T is stealing millions of customers. AT&T has every right to keep their deal with Apple. Just wait a few more years and the iPhone will be open for everyone, just as iTuned came to the PC. Apple's best interest is to sell the iPhone everywhere but has an obligation to repay AT&T for making all this possible.

The most notable games that needed to learn from this example being Star Wars Galaxies and... World of Warcraft, neither of which were even remotely playable during the first several days they were up.

There is a huge difference between a few days of issues at launch and a game which is struggling to fix/add things for months/years due to a premature release. During which time players quit because they don't want to put up with bugs and lack of content. It is understandable that an event you have no chance to prepare for, the launch, might suffer some issues. Also keep in mind that World of Warcraft's main problem was too many people wanted to play the game. Not that terrible an issue as long as you can ramp up capacity quickly, which is what Blizzard did.

Well, that's the point, let me ask you, which of the two is a more reasonable judgement? A thousand songs for a quarter of a million bucks (with a fine of ~$250/song) or two dozen songs for almost the same amount (~$9K/song)? If they did the $250 / song for 1000 songs it seems reasonable... If the basis was ~$9k/song * 1,000 songs, that would equal around 9 million bucks!

If they went after all the songs, it is pretty much a given she would have lost if what this juror says is true. So instead of paying $220,000 that she is now, she could pay as little as $250,000 or up to 9 million. In any case, she would be losing more money (if she is ever going to pay this judgment in the first place).

These people also are offered what, $3,000 to settle? That would have been less then half if she was given the minimum of $250 per song! So the lesson here is don't steal songs, don't redistribute them, and if you get caught you better settle if they still offer it.

The prosecutor decided to focus on just 20-24 songs for this case, although they had evidence that she distributed over 1,000. If they went for every song, even if she got the minimum ($250 per violation I believe), it would have been over 250,000 dollars. She actually ended up paying less because they went after a select few.

Aside from visual voicemail, there's nothing the iPhone does that other phones don't already do. So I don't see where the conflict is with Verizon or T-mobile.

Well then go ask Verizon and T-Mobile why they turned down Apple. It is because cell phone companies have a stranglehold on the market and have a strict dictation on what a phone can and can not do.

  12. Re:The #1 reason I won't buy an iPhone on Activation Problems in iPhone Paradise · · Score: 1

Apple did try to partner with Verizon first. But Verizon and other phone companies wouldn't let Apple do what they wanted. Releaing the iPhone with Verizon would probably have meant no free internet, no free google maps, paying extra for visual voicemail, and lots of other stuff.

AT&T are the good guys here for finally letting a phone come out where they don't dictate what features it can have and what you have to pay extra for.

It isn't bad coding if the system was design to be rebooted daily/weekly. Certain resource intensive tasks need to be performed while the server is down. If the server was online, it would take much more time then if the server was down for a couple minutes and degrade the game to an unplayable state. Keeping thousands of servers online 24/7 would break Blizzard's budget (even though they are making over a billion a year). It is not economically or technically feasible.

If this gains any kind of traction, it will probably lead to the demise of the suggest program. All someone has to do is preform a few actions (create a product, website, preform searches, etc.) and then they can sue Google.

You do realize that there was a Linux kit for the PS2, released in 2002, that was supposed to be aimed at the homebrew crowd, right? (Yes, I realize it was a flop.) Seems to me that Nintendo is copying an idea that Sony first tried.

Then what explains Sony actively preventing people from trying to create applications for the PSP? After that flop, it appears that Sony had no further interest in anything except official company applications. Now we suddenly hear about their linux stratagy after Nintendo announces their own. We learn of a tilt controller which has supposidly been in development for 10 years after Nintendo announces their own.

Sony is blatently trying to take every idea possible from Nintendo and incorperate it into their own system. They probably wouldn't be doing this if they didn't create such an expensive piece of hardware. They need every advantage they can get at this point, even if it means taking ideas from the competition.

The PS3 is not over-priced, if anything it is under-priced. If a blue-ray player currently retails for $1000, and it only plays blue-ray disks, how much is Sony currently losing per console? They must be losing a bucketload of cash per console sale. They probably want to price it lower but they simply might not be able to. They might be able to drop the price a little, but we will probably see Xbox360 Premium sub-$200 before we see PS3 "core" sub-$400.

As I said before, Sony has created the Titanic of consoles.

  24. Sony in Serious Trouble on Resident Evil, Game On With Wii · · Score: 1

In my opinion, Sony is in serious trouble. They have created a hugely expensive console which will probably never beat Microsoft on price point. Microsoft already has lots of decent games while Sony has almost none in their lineup.

Then you have Nintendo coming out and wowing everyone with the Wii. What it comes down to is there is 1-2 games on Playstation 3 I might want to play and 1-2 games on Xbox360. But right now, there are at least 6 Wii games I want by the end of this year and 2-3 DS games. Nintendo's inovations are really paying off while Microsoft and Playstation are basically hardware locked for the rest of this generation. They will be canablizing each other in sales while Nintendo shoots ahead. By shipping with innovated hardware standard, developers have an incentive to create new and interesting games. Sony realizes this but the only thing they can do is add some tilt control to their controller which seems awkward at best and rip of at worst.

It looks like Sony has built the titanic of video game consoles.
