Has everyone forgotten that there is no ONE linux(yes I know they are distributions) to build games for? How much R&D should a game developer spend on making sure that their game works on Ubuntu 7.10 vs 7.04 vs Fedora 2,3,4,5,6,7,8? Not to mention Debian, Slackware and the list goes on. And lets say developers settle on one distro of LInux to build games for. How many elitists are going to poo-poo the idea of them not building for the distribution of gaming choice? And besides, with all the legal crap about this platform and that platform using GPL'd software to make money and having to open source their design, don't you think there would be some concern about having to divulge the source code for their game?

  20. Some Are Missing the Point on Wii Outsells 360, PS3 Worldwide · · Score: 1

I think some of you have touched upon the success of the Wii and some are missing the mark. Let me give the reasons why we purchased a Wii.

I purchased a Wii for our family in April. I have a 4 year old son that LOVES it. The games we have for it so far are: Wii Sports (default), Wii Play, TMNT for Wii, Transformers, Madden '08.
Let me list a few reasons why WE purchased the Wii:
1 - I saw it as a way for my kid to play games and NOT just sit on his butt all day doing so. So far this has proven fairly true. In the sports games he limits his own play by getting tired and wanting to turn it off by himself. Pretty good self control for a 4 year old if you ask me.
2 - It was cheaper than the others. Plain and simple. I didn't want to spend 400 - 600 dollars for a system for my kid to sit on but all day.
3 - I am NOT a hardcore gamer by any definition (except "owns a gaming console"). I enjoy gaming that I can sit down for 30 minutes, play and be done. Madden 08 is a good way of doing that, other than I get my ass kicked every time I go online...but I hope to get better...eventually.
4 - My freinds and family can come over and play without having to learn 250 different controller combinations to play a game well. So in short we can have fun with it with new people.

Since this is /. I will put this in a slightly different view that I am sure we can all relate to in some sense. I see the analogy of Wii as one like Windows versus Linux. Windows has an interface that is easy for users to USE. Linux is much sturdier in most sense, but the learning curve is steeper. MS did the smart marketing and made an easy to use system that is "playing catch-up" on security and other "hardcore" features. Linux was for hardcore people and is playing catch-up on ease of use. Which is more popular?? Wii can play catch-up on graphics much easier (I would think) than Xbox and PS3 can play catch-up on playability for the masses. It seems to me no wonder why Wii is doing better at this point.

We all know how the press can get stories wrong, especially technical ones. I am not 100% sure that this isn't a good idea. 24. WTF? on Bill Would Reverse Bans On Municipal Broadband · · Score: 1

Why does this make sense to everyone??? This is going to be taxpayer subsidized BUSINESS that the public municipalities and governments should be involved in.

Why doesn't anyone wonder why the government doesn't just deregulate the entire industry. The problem is that AT&T (as they seem to be the whipping boy here today) can get an exclusive agreement to operate in a location. Why not just disallow this and open up competition? All those of you who think this is SUCH a great idea...don't you realize that TAXPAYERS are paying for this! If you think regulations about filtering, download limits, etc apply on a service you PAY for then just wait 'til the government receives the bill for the amount of data transferred and complaints about service being slow. They will figure out how to stop P2P and large downloads and anything else that can be considered "the using of too much bandwidth."

Besides that, it IS unfair to ANY business when government enters that market. De-regulation is what should be happening and open up the markets to competition.
