    I was just discussing this with Rodney Brooks at the DSTO today, and essentially the answer is that it shows that the company can deliver high tech solutions. A lot like the F1 grand prix, really, mostly advertising and some blue sky research.

    It's fairly safe to assume that even if the FBI isn't looking then someone else (your employer? your ISP? Echelon?) is. Moral of the story: use one time pads. Or just hook your lava lamp up, they generate great spoof fodder, although not as interesting as the paranoid freaks on /. ;)

    Maybe one can use this against GPL violations. What does the legislation say about when, oh, Phillips or Vivendi might be violating GPL terms?

    Violations of GPL are violations of contractual terms, not copyright, so it probably says nothing.

    However many items in a computer use plastic, so it's clearly wrong to say that coal is the only one used, and that all of the fossil fuels are used as fuels and not turned into plastic, say.

    I'm sorry to offend your sense of accuracy by rounding up a whole 4.1%. It's the general relativity of their arugment that I'm addressing

    They are claiming it takes 240 kilograms of fossil fuels to create a 17" CRT that currently sells for $125. Now, coal is about the cheapest fossil fuel out there and it costs about $30 per metric ton of coal. So, that's $7.50 in the price of a 17" CRT just for coal. Now, in that $7.50 1/4 metric ton of coal, there are 5.1 million BTUs of energy

    240 kg is not 1/4 of a tonne. Also, not all of the fossil fuels used in producing a CRT are used as fuel, and not all are coal. More lies, damned lies and statistics?

    This brings up an interesting step in the path towards trying to settle Mars... would it be a smart idea to have communciations satellites orbiting Mars before we send the first humans?

    The current set of satellites provide communication links between the landers and Earth.

    Is there any way to get your money back, or is it gone forever?

    In the terms of my credit/debit card it says if I notify the bank within a reasonable time period of unauthorized transactions I get the money back. I suspect most banks have a similar deal.
