It's about fucking time that companies realize the trickle-down effect of abusing nerds. Who do the ignorant masses go to when they need advice? Their nerdy friend...

Perhaps the best way to get kids to pay attention is to raise them to appreciate things for which you want them to be interested in... and then not kill the opportunity with boring school teachers.

I've got the same problem with TV, too. I have always needed to do something /while/ watching TV... whether that's play with Legos as a child or surf the interweb as an adult. There's a growing abuse against consumers by corporations. Parking lots are designed to let people in easy, but not out. Exact same with stores - in easy, and once they have your money they fuck you in the ass.

Giant companies want software as a service. Right now, they're all using Citrix to emulate thin Windows clients. It still costs a good amount of money (see Citrix stock skyrocket). It's a lot slower and less responsive. It adds another place for failure in the chain of applications.

If you design a lean web app, you'll never have to upgrade your company's computers again (relatively speaking). They could all run Windows 9x or Linux and Firefox for all you care.

  24. Re:From the horse's mouth on MS Responds To Vista's Network / Audio Problems · · Score: 4, Interesting

Generally, audio goes through many buffers before being sent out to the device. In Vista, perhaps all audio is streamlined as high-priority.

For example, when audio recording, you don't want to use Microsoft's typical sound system - you want to record using ASIO which goes through less buffering and latency. If you record using the regular sound system, you end up with perhaps 100s of ms of lag, which is a bitch when you're trying to record to a metronome.

As some AC above noted, Linux only has a direct audio IO path when using jackd. Otherwise, everything is buffered a plenty.

So I think it has nothing to do with CPU power, and more to do with "Vista is a real-time multimedia machine!" When you're interrupting a LOT to be attentive to the audio device, this is going to interfere with the network, whereas if you just interrupt less regularly but send larger amounts of buffered data you don't have that problem.

*Fair warning, my facts may not be 100% accurate, but I think this is the gist of the problem.
