  1. It's Dead? on Who Killed the Netbook? · · Score: 1

I love my netbook. Battery lasts about 7 hours with heavy use, its small and light and 10 inch screen is enough for quite a lot of uses (prefer using vim to eclipse on it though). It's like an ipad except you can create content on it. When it dies, I will buy another one.

  2. Somewhat backwards logic on Game Development On Android · · Score: 1

By the logic of this author, it's better to open a store in the middle of nowhere than a shopping center, because the middle of nowhere is not saturated with competitors. The number of applications on the iPhone actually draws in more customers, Apple advertises rather heavily the fact that you can find an app for anything!. It's also been shown that iPhone users are willing to pay money for applications, has the same been shown about android users? Also I question whether Java is more developer friendly than objective - c. The syntax is more familiar ... perhaps, but thats really its only advantage, Objective C also has memory management (if you want it).

  9. Nokia 1600 on Consumers Look For More Utilitarian Cellphones · · Score: 2, Interesting
    I have a (gsm) nokia 1600 .
It is probably the best mobile phone I have ever owned, for the following reasons:
-It was cheap AU$99 outright, probably cheaper now, I don't worry too much about dropping or breaking it.
-It has a nice colourful display that is easy to read.
-It has a reasonable form factor, not tiny and not huge, not heavy and not too light.
    -It can send sms.
    -It can make phone calls.
    -It has a digital clock.
-It can remember important dates and meetings.
-The battery lasts *for ever* with the right settings. I find myself recharging it less than once a week.
-Even my mother can use the interface.

It does have a few negatives
-The keys feel a bit cheap
-Ocasionally when I go on a train(subway), it loses its connection with vodafone, and I have to turn it off and on. (Probably a firmware bug)
-Cannot add ringtones/skins/java games (who cares?)
-The default settings use more battery than is neccesary
I have owned phones before that were crammed with features (NGAGE anyone?) and I was never as happy with them as I am with this phone. The complete lack of advanced features is it's greatest strength.

I have a flash based river T20 1 gig model, and it works exactly as you asked. All i have to do is drag a file across in nautilus and its on the player. MP3, OGG, WMA you name it. No DRM on the imp3 and Hogg files but it is compatible with windows media 10 bdrm apparently. I cant speak for their other models but the T20 really does act like a portable hard drive that automatically indexes the songs "instantly" when it starts.

I do have a few complaints though, I haven't figured out how to order the songs by file name, it seems to order them by last modified tag. However it does display the ID3 tags correctly

  17. Re:Odd things in the movie previews. on Douglas Adams Remembered By Those Who Knew Him · · Score: 1

Go see the movie, unless you are really hurting for cash. Its got enough scattered scenes that are funny to be worth the money, however dont expect it to be anywhere near the book or radio play in quality, content or humour. It's kind of like if the guys responsible for Star Trek Voyager directed it, you know, missing all understanding of what made the original so good and trying to pander to a modern hollywood stereotype audience (action, romance, adventure).

  18. Pity the movie sucked on Douglas Adams Remembered By Those Who Knew Him · · Score: 1

The radio show and the book were brilliant, funny and off the wall. The movie is just... well... disappointing, they had the funniest material in the world and yet managed to make it bland and hollywoody. Not only that, but it diverged from the books and radio show so much that it feels like 80% of the movie comes from some alternate universe where Douglas Adams was notfunny.
However I must say some of the special effects were very good, and the vogons in particular look just right.

When you buy one you have to call up an activation number and walk around your house .. i guess so their satelite can get fix on you, not good. either way when you make a call from home its counted as a local call with the usual 20c fixed fee. If you use it anywhere else its a mobile call.
I dont know about activating it in sydney cbd but i do know that if you make a call with it when you are home, the call remains local even if you leave your house.

I believe they have stopped selling them because too few people were using them as mobiles and instead using them almost exclusivley as local phones.
