The article criticizes Microsoft for not fully understanding the vulnerability, and issuing an incomplete patch.
I understand that in a best case scenario, a vendor should release a 100% effective patch. However, in reality, that's not always going to be the case.
Microsoft released a patch that stopped the public vulnerable attack vector. Then, once they were alerted that they didn't fix all possible vectors, they issued a new patch (albeit quite a few months later).
With the large amount of bugs and vulnerabilities that a software behemoth like Windows is going to have, is it really that unthinkable that an incomplete first-patch would be released? I'd wager that even OSS products routinely have incomplete first-patches.
USB hotplugging works great for me on my thinkpad with FC4 + VM Workstation 5.
I have a windows VM, and use USB devices on that. I have a USB serial adapter for my laptop, and have no problems with the VM hot-plugging it. I however have to add "usbserial" and one other module (mct_u232 I think) to/etc/hotplug/blacklist to prevent linux from trying to load drivers for it first.
I also sync my Windows Mobile PDA to the VM, I just had to/etc/hotplug/blacklist the ipaq modules.
So, lets say that they are actually able to find *some* way of enforcing this age policy that works.
Whats going to happen? All the under-18 crowd will go chat somewhere else that dosen't yet have these restrictions (IRC, AOL-ICQ, Gtalk, etc).
The predators will go where the kids go. Predators of that type will not just give up because Yahoo closes its doors. What they've done is move the Kids (and Predators) to other places that will most likely be harder to monitor and/or track.
I am whole-heartedly for keeping Sexual Preditors away from children, but I think this child-ban on Yahoo chat is just stupid.
If this ruling applies to the large Telcos as well, You can bet this will not stay long.
If I was an AT&T, or a Verizon, I'd begin immediate plans to migrate my telephone network from Circuit switched/Frame Relay/ATM to IP. Whats to stop them from running a private IP network, and saving regulatory fees?
That link on windows update is probably the SP2 that everyone is using.
That link should be fine for you to download. What MS is saying is that that is the full SP2 (230ish MB). In the future they will have a version of SP2 that will only download the components that you need for your pc, which will reduce size.
They don't want everyone downloading the full blown SP2, because almost everyone will not need the whole package. However, if you want it now, its the way to go.. as long as you arent on a 9600 baud modem!
X = Will accept any date 1975-Present.
Z = *.*
Y = Will accept any product made in the history of Microsoft. The Fabric of Space-Time is also an acceptable answer.
Now when I log in to my account at work, instead of just needing password, secureid, smartcard, fingerscan, eyescan, and a note from my mother, I'll also need to use an on-screen touch-screen keyboard!
Of course, someone will probably now figure out that tapped glass reverberates at a different frequency...
From the site:
"I have put up some google ad links above to generate some support. The last sizeable donation has gone towards a development box for Sop Skrutt, and in the future it will help reimburse Xbox-Scene.com who is kind enough to host us (including the above rather large and expensive to host AVI file)."
My condolences on your host's soon-to-be-slashdoted-to-hell server.

Yknow, not to be offtopic.. but people complaining about the level of reading now today tend to overlook the obvious.
My neighbor has a daughter, and complains that she is on the Internet all the time. She's constantly surfing the web, posting to message boards, and hanging out in chat rooms.
What is her complaint? "I wish that she would get off the computer, maybe sit down and read something."

How fast will it serve pr0n?
I think (hope dearly) he was refering to just the Original "The Matrix", and not the whole trilogy.
The first one was a great movie, the rest, well.. were just 'not'.
Since it's on Google News..

Pffft, this isn't new. I've had my write-only memory mounted as /dev/null for quite some time!
If they're having server problems, isn't it more like a million SYNs screamed out, and were never heard from again?
Last time the military provided artifical limbs, we all know what happened.
For my side job, I build my own Internet then generate hits to my own Google to make my own cash.
I then buy my own food grown in my own garden, except when I refuse to take my own check.
Just had to agree with the parent.
How long until this is reversed?

I bet that is the first time anyone has ever used the words 'Saint', 'tease' and 'blow' in a sentance.

This is the next, logical step in building our own Transformers. Yknow, they are more than meets the eye.

If this is the first time anyone has played Quake 3 Deathmatch, then I've somehow hit a timewarp..
In which case I need to go buy some Tickets.

This will sure resolve all those commuter issues in Venice.
