Ahh yes another imporper use of the term quantum leap. When will people learn that the term has nothing to do with a large change and that it simply refers to a change in states whose values are essentially predetermined, in many respects similar to multiples of 300 in the old baud rates for modems. When you purchaes that lightning fast 2400 baud modem you were making a quantum leap from that clunky 300 baud modem because the speeds had been predetermined for you.
All Verison is doing is creating a whole new system and there is no real dependence of the news speeds on the old, thus no quantum leap

Although not clear in the actual paper, the oxidation potentials of the special pair in PSI and Rb. spaeroides is roughly 0.5 V vs S.H.E. On the other hand, the reduction potential of the FeS complex of PSI is almost 1 V. Luckily, proteins are most resilliant to high reduction potential than high oxidation potential.
In higher plants under full sunlight, the PSI complexes can function for days without need for replacement by the plant. In fact, under full light conditions the plant actually will increase the # of PSI complexes in the chloroplast. This should be comapred with the fate of the PS II complex which has a half-life of hours under full sun conditions due to its high (1.1 V) oxidation potential. The loss of PSII in favor of PS I is also why plants go from a dark green color to a light green in the sun.
I just read the article in Nano letters.
The reported 12% efficiency was not for Spinach proteins. The authors simply demonstrate that Spinahc PSI proteins can be interated into a working device but report no statement of efficiency.
Instead the authors extracted the distinctly different photosynthetic proteins from Rb. sphaeroides.
Also, it is not clear if the author's efficiency calculation take into account the inherent loss of energy due to using excitation energy higher than the energy of the charge separated state of the RC. Or if they are simply comparing photons in and number of electrons out.
Does this mean that Microsoft will issue a new version of fortran or will we have to use F-flat from Visual Studio? I guess they will also need to issue their own versions of BLAS/LAPACK/IMSL as they wouldn't want someone else controlling low level functionality of the actual HPC code that has nothing to do with Windows.
So if we ever get to the point of inserting modfied DNA into the human genome to "cure" mutations that exist in family lines, will parents have to pay royalties in order to have children? Will it be on a child by child basis or will it be based on the number of attempts at insemmination? If you have a low sperm or egg count, will you get a discount?
It terms of all the flaming for and against microsoft, one thing to keep mind thar part of the core of the ire directed against microsoft is due to fact that they use their monoplositic powers to such an extent that it is impossible for a niche commercial product to become financially viable. Which leaves us with the fragmented Open-source market trying desparately to meet the needs of people who would like to pay good money for a product that truly meets their needs. People who are willing to try three or four different products till they find the one they want.
What I do not understand was why they just did not watch one of the many cop shows on TV to find out how to call the phone company to get a trace placed on the call?
But the role of a represantive form of government is to attempt to codify into law the needs and desires of the people they represent. This codification is to occur is as open a forum as possible. Corporate america is not a separate State and can not and should not be allowed to do what it wants, anytime it wants. By its very nature Coporate decision have nothing to do with people and are done in secret. I will take looney short lived laws anytime over corporate greed.
The problem is that Companies have tried to patent genes, if not whole cells. While a year old, they are the top hits on google (so they must be right!) you should look at Organic Consumers Association and The Detroit News
Yes, there is a good chance it is just a local temporal trend but then again a local temporal increase temperature leading to a local temporal melting of the south pole will be meaningless on geological timescales but devasting on human timescales.
People against the data showing global warming appear to ignore the fact that if it is correct, we will be in trouble. And when you see the pollution clouds hovering over even small farming communities it is tough to argue that we are not having an affect on the environment.
These specialist technicians need advanced reading, problem-solving, and basic electronics skills.
Or they could hire anyone who has acquired a BS in chemistry, physics or engineering. These disciplines all train individuals to solve complex problems and to do it in a quantitative, reproducible and most importantly reportable manner. Not to call in question the problem solving skills of IT workers but hypothesis testing is not something typically encouraged in the IT world (or at least not by the managers whose only concern is padding their budgets)
I believe Bill Gates has trademarked all technology uses of Gate, Gates, stile, fence, door, window and maybe even stoop. Basically, anything that involves an opening allowing the free transport of matter or information from one place to another.
Now if we can only get the Death Tapes mentioned in Robert Zelanzy's "Isle of the Dead". Of course this would violate the clonning research ban but that is a separate issue.
or has it been taken already?
See Merriam-Webster
for how it is currently used in English.
or some other foreign language word for Windows. The average american will have no idea what it means but that is ok, they still have blinking clocks on their VCR's as well.
Any libraries getting free cds of the those wonderful shatner or nimoy records?

How long does an email (or for that matter a voice mail) need to remain at 0 momentum before it is considered storage?
Well just will be a boon for the drive-in movie crowd in Alaska during the Midnight sun
Well if JMS is going to Trek, he should have Bill Mummy and Jeff Conaway on the show as morale officers.
Now if Think Geek will only sell Tin Foils hats lined with this stuff, we will be all set.
My download ran in Winamp just fine
all it needs is a bar behind it and you could have someone on rollerblades push you to work as if you were a 2 yearold.
Better yet, in New York City where those people who walk 10 to 15 dogs at a time could use the remote control to walk 10 to 15 kids at a time.

Here is a very simple system that even works out in the middle of nowhere.

But while we were looking through all your belongings we noticed this little tidbit and jumped on it!

$20 million dollars is chump change given what Drug Companies spend on advertising.
