  1. Re:Private sponsorship of public projects on Google Hiring Programmers to Work on OpenOffice · · Score: 1

My only complaint with Oo2.0 is the slow load times (which I would attribute to that junk inside called java). It wouldn't hurt if they added some curve-fitting routines to the spreadsheet sw, which is the only application, which feature for feature, fails to compete with the MS counterpart. I don't know if many people know that it can convert to pdf just about any document. That's something that's underrated, as it would require me to spend $200+ to get the same capability in MS word (not counting the price of office of course).

OC'ing a P4 to 4 ghz isn't likely to result in any noticable difference... If you're a gamer (like me), a 2 ghz+ machine works just fine, slow-downs are generally caused by graphics card/memory issues... If you do a lot of multi-tasking you're better off spending the money on a dual processor system that has 15k rpm scsis, I assure you if you do this you will see a very noticable difference. I also noticed that alienware is using a raid 0 SATA configuration -- that's just downright stupid considering the data corruption potential.

My guess is that such reactors will use a pebble bed core, which allows active refueling of the core. BTW, a reactor is the core, not the entire electrical generation system, i.e. this doesn't include the turbines, heat exchangers, misc auxilliary components... IF the core is a pebble bed, it is virtually impossible to be turned into a weapon... The pebbles are about 6cm in diameter, and contain approximately 10000 microparticles of fuel, which are individually encased in layers of pyrolytic carbon and graphite, and all of these particles are contained in a random array inside the otherwise graphite-filled pebble... You chemists out there can figure out how difficult it would be to separate any significant mass of fuel from one pebble (which will probably be low enriched U235), and mix that with 10^5 pebbles in one core, it seems unlikely that this material could be stolen and used for a bomb... As far as melting points, I remember from my design project the failure temp is around 1600 C, which is extraordinarily high... I would post a link that shows what happens in the event of a loss-of-coolant accident, but I would prefer my website not be slashdotted today (verizon wouln't like it either).

There's also a batch script if you google for it that will automate the process if you've got a lot of files you want to convert...

This is definitetly a positive step - openoffice sometimes inexplicably crashes on some spreadsheets, and at least last time I used OO, some of the excel charts were just treated as images and were not editable. The one thing though I wish someone would fix is the need for a really good equation editor in the word processor - I'm a grad student in engr and the only reason I haven't migrated completely to linux is because I have to use word, in conjunction with mathtype to write up reports, etc. I know OO has included some sort of support for equations, but it's still a long way from attaining the robustness I need.

This is what I've suspected all along - delay halo 2's release another 3 months (which considering it's already 3.5 months behind schedule already wouldn't be a surprise), and expedite release date of the xbox 2. That way they can force everyone that wants halo 2 to upgrade (and who didn't buy the xbox at least partially because of the existence of halo?).

If you don't know what you're doing you shouldn't use gentoo - on the other hand if you break kde by removing qt(if you try to remove glibc, gcc, etc you shouldn't be using linux) it's not going to break your installation-and if i were stupid enough to do it i would be able to connect the dots between removing qt and kde not working, and simply emerge qt again.
