The moon would be feasible only if a more stable means of energy production were available to be placed there (solar panels don't count, too expensive and heavy for significant electric power). In Mars there is at least an atomosphere (95% CO2 +1-2% Argon) - this would allow for an open cycle modular gas reactor (some of which that have been proposed would use "spent fuel" as fuel (extracting the plutonium) that could operate on a combined open cycle CO2 + closed cycle Argon cycle that could be quite efficient considering the resident temp on mars is well below zero deg C (delta T accross reactor is directly proportional to effiency and is limited by the material constraints (lower inlet temp = greater delta T). The bottom line is that once you have an established, reliable power source on Mars there is really no need for an interim station because the big cost is transporting stuff outside the earth's gravitational field, not transporting it accross open space. The only way an interim station would help is if it served as some sort of manufacturing plant, but if an effective energy source is available on Mars, the same thing could be accomplished there.

They (SCO executives) would be wise to not further expand their lawsuits, as each company they sue can countersue for defamation. Overall this seems like a big scam - intimidate businesses into giving SCO money for linux licenses, causing SCOX to rise, and enriching McBride & co at the expense of the clueless investors who continue to buy worthless stock.

I think Itanium will catch on given two things happen: first, Intel needs to lower the price - I just bought a 1U server and would have loved to have gotten an Itanium - but it's prohibitively expensive compared to P4s or Xeons. Second, the x86 emulation is going to have to improve if Itanium is going to gain acceptance as a desktop cpu (granted if this happens, there will likely be an Itanium clone much line athlon-64 and the opteron). Otherwise I think Itanium is likely to go the way of alphas - a great design but overpriced and with poor application support.

I tried using the nv driver without any acceleration (using the same settings in xf86config as I have on my working X installation under linux). It seems to be messing up the refresh rate (the picture is skewed) - I tried pkg_add the nvidia drivers, but it asks for a kernel .config file (admittedly not knowing how to deal with this is more likely due to my ignorance of freebsd but the nv driver should have worked without the nvidia drivers). First of all I don't like MS's approach to software development (particularly the activation garbage you have to go through now) but I don't see that anyone has a right to force MS to stop using IE (yeah they technically weren't forced but the lawsuit threat initiated their response). Take Apple for example - practically everthing on a Mac is proprietary Apple software and you don't see the Mac people going ballistic over it. Forcing MS to make changes to their OS for anything other than privacy violations/blatant security holes isn't right. To illustrate the absurdity of the DOJ policy consider this: I do some scientific programming myself and I usually use the excel plugins for C to generate tables/graphs - if MS is forced to change their OS why shouldn't someone be able to force me to write a program in such away as to force me to generate charts using openoffice/staroffice or even Corel's wordperfect suite? If people don't like MS's software change to linux/freeBSD/MacOS where you can do whatever you want - it just isn't equitable to MS to force them to change stuff in their OS just because a group of people dislike IE (for gosh sakes if you didn't like MS why would you spend the $100+ to use their software?).

I can say that when I installed FreeBSD 5.1 with hyperthreading disabled it was significantly faster than when I installed it with hyperthreading enabled. I'd say that hyperthreading is more or less worthless at this point in time for multi-processor systems (at least until software properly recognizes it), though admittedly it does have its advantages in single processor configuration.
