    It sounds as though the system worked of infrared pulse encoding, and that is why he could use a modified television remote. Imagine you are the one designing this (probably in the 1970's or 1980's...) It is generally desirable to keep things simple to ensure they actually *work* -- that is, having a rolling code that may be out of sync while having a signalling train hurtle toward the junction at 80 mph is not desirable -- you want a simple system that the train can activate if needed.
    You can have a look at the crossing in question here. The trams are not going there at 80 mph, its rather about 5 mph. 12 people were hurt in this accident, and only one seriously (broken legs). BTW, the drivers are forbidden to enter the crossing simultaneously if the change of the switch position can cause the collision. Derailments caused by switch position changed under the running tram happen not so rarely.

    If SUN Java is GPL'd, why would anybody carry on with an alternative version?
    What if SUN's promise is just a way to discourage the open-source competition? Let's wait until it really releases the whole Java under GPL.

    In fact ethanol (another neurotoxin you may be more familiar with) might be more effective for this. If you offer it free in a glass to most people, they will actually drink it!
    In fact, methanol has the same odour and taste as ethanol. So, they would actually drink methanol as well.

    You got a point, but if you got only one socket, how are you supposed to restore the broken BIOS chip, once booted from the spare chip?
    Boot, remove the chip (with the power on), insert the broken one, program, reboot. I have done it.

    it is already a criminal offense to withold any keys to encrypted data when requested to do so by a law enforcement officer (which is IMO a terrible law, but it is the law nonetheless).
    How can you prove, that this is encrypted data, not some random garbage?
