My facts are straight. I am not saying that the Israeli government didn't make mistakes, but I can see clearly that the propaganda of some Arab countries is powerful and influential. Don't fall for it, try to think with your own head.
- Army shelling a lot of Palestine: these actions really did happen, in order to take out terrorists who carried out attacks against civilians. There have been some civilian casualties, regrettably. However, note that the army tries to avoid these as much as possible, and much more than the US has done in some of it's own actions around the world. Israel also did a MUCH better job at avoiding civilian casualties than Russia, for example.
The Israelis are exercising a lot of restraint when retaliating: usually they just try to demolish a Palestinian police building.
- "Israeli settlers living in confiscated land have shot a number of Palestinians." Total lie. This happened ONCE in the last 10 years (I am not even sure if this hapened before, at all). The reverse, however, happens DAILY! Israli civilians are being shot at, killed in drive-by shootings, shelled at, every day. They however, never take justice in their hands, Israel is just not that kind of country. I am sorry, but I must be calm but forceful in pointing out this part of your post.
- Lebanese militants: the only active militia in that region is Hezboll'ah. I agree that the Lebanese christian militia doesn't hold sympathies for the Palestinians, but there have not been any attacks on Palestinians from Lebanon, since a very long time. If there was, I am sure the Islamic propaganda would make a huge stink about it.
I would like to elaborate a bit about the PR offensive that some Islamic countries and individuals are performing: I noticed, for example, that the fact that Israely army surrounded Jenin, has been given a lot of visibility. Strangely, the media usually failed to report that this action took place because two Israeli policemen were killed. Another example: during an explosive terrorist attack in Israel, drive-by or sniper shootings take place, too, in which more Israeli civilians die, but these deaths are misteriously ignored by the media.
Little things like this, which, day by day, poison the objectivity of the news, and frustrate to a certain degree, the attempts to peace of the Israel. Everyone's preferite pastime is to criticise Israel, even though eery country would have done the same, or much worse, to protect it's citizens.
Finally, I am not jewish, or an Israeli citizen, but I have, all my life, been in search for the truth, and hated lies (and untold truths). This has put me, very often, in uncomfortable positions, on the side of the underdogs.
Since terrorist attacks have been carried out exclusively by Palestinians, this seems as a reasonable case of post-judice. It's sad, and I believe many Palestinians are resenting it, but it's the way to protect the country.
Actually, this post _is_ a troll. The sentence that the poster quotes is very much correct and agreable, i.e. Windows didn't really help consumers that much as it always requires more and more resources. That's why a lot of friends didn't upgrade from Win98 to WinME, and a lot of them are quite happy with Win95. The reason is, WinME is not more stable than Win98, which, again, is not more stable than Win95. And the features that WinME bring are really not worth the upgrade.
Win2000, although so much aclaimed, is not more stable than WinNT 4.0 + SP3. Oh, sure, you get Microsoft Active Directory, but noone is using it. Basically, people could have stayed with WinNT, but MS forces the industry to upgrade.

Your arguments have been appearing several times on Slashdot and in the media, propelled by the well-oiled (sorry for the pun) Arab propaganda.
However, this reminds me of the propaganda in the Third Reich, Hitler's Germany. You see, Arabs would like US to be more partian in the Middle East, in favor of the Palestinians. Or even better, just leave the problem to the Arab countries. That's exactly what Germany wanted from the European (and other world) countries: mind your own business, so you won't be harmed.
And so, when Germany wanted to take part of the Chech Republic, the European powers of the time (France and Unied Kingdom) agreed, thinking that this will secure them peace.
Well, Germany invaded the whole of Chech Republic, butwhat the heck, they are not touching France or UK, right? So, everythig is fine? Well, not really, as son after Germany invades Poland. Hmmm.. now surely the European countries would join forces to stop the agression.. uhh.. no, they didn't. They thought that it wll stop there, that they won't be harmed. Some 70 million deaths later, the world didn't learn the lesson.
Why do you think the US supporst Israel? It's because it's the only truly democratic country in the MIddle East. Sure, the US policy could go hands-off, let the Arabs "throw Israel in the sea" as they so often threaten. Then they will be satisfied with te US. So, the terrorist attack actually worked! They achieved something, they changed US' policy in the Middle East! Great, so next time they don't like something about the US, they make another terrorist attack, and the US will cave in. Well, let's see: the christians in Syria, why not get rid of them, too? Surely the US will not mind, or else...
If you don't stand up to the bullies, they will make your life impossible, eventually. That's why we have principles, that's why they make us humane and preserve our dignity.
As I already said elsewhere in the thread (and I am not going to repeat myself, who wants to, can read my other posts), it's not at all enough to increase security during boarding. It will be imposible, as you noted yourself, eliminate the danger of terrorists smuggling knives or even firearms (which don't have to be made of metal) onto planes. The thing to concentrate on, is new tougher policies and better trained crew and flight attendants, that will allow them to cope with terrorist acts more effectively. Not just to be able to fight (martial arts, perhaps carrying weapons), but also to have policies in place that will allow them to attack the hijackers, even if this means risking the life of some of the passengers, if that saves the whole plane. This is something a few airlines already do, and no terrorist fucks with them, because they know it would be, basically, futile.
Sorry, I ended up re-telling the same thing again. But I believe it's an important point to make.
Actually, knives or not, that's not at all the point. Ultimately, you can kill a person with your bare hands. It's something the SAS and other intelligence operatives learn during their special training. Also, arms will always be smuggled, in a way or another, onto planes. Example: weapons not made from metal. Fiberglas/epoxi and ceramics are already today used for some special firearms.
The actual point, in my view, is to expecially increasy security on board. Highly skiled and trained crew will be the key to ensure this sort of terrorist acts will not succeed in the future. There are a few airlines that terrorist don't fuck with, and it's exactly because of the training of the crew of those airlines. It's not just martial art, it's also uncompromising action against terrorists incorporated into the policies of these airlines. The airlines I am talking about had long taken some strategic decisions in respect to security. USA didn't want to take such decisions, but will probably have to, now. Decisions like, Risk the life of some passengers or crew members, in order to save the whole plane. Decisions like, not allowing access to the pilot's cabin, even if under threat. Those are tough decisions and policies, but are really the only solution to real security against terrorism in aircrafts.
Exactly. IfUS or any other democratic country) folds because of the wish of a few insane individuals NOW, it will be the target of the wishes of other such individuals in the future.
No, you can not fold now. the policy must remain unchanged EXACTLY because of this terrorist attack.
What I think _will_ change, though, are anti-terrorist policies in US and most likely, around the world. Also, there will be more understanding for the measures the Israeli government has in place against terrorism. As an official from the Israeli administratio said, there are "no shortcuts". I think this is very important to acknowledge, there is no one time, quick and painless, solution. We are looking forward to a systematic, uncompromising, painful, down-to-earth approach to combating terrorism.
I think the measures in place in Israel are just one example. We should also look into the tactics followed by some airliners. These measures are very tough, very demanding on the crew of airplanes and airport personnel, but they have paid off.
This is my first post on Slashdot on this occasion, so I would like to offer my condolances to the families affected by this tragedy.
So, because you and a bunch of other guys with strong and obviously uninformed opinions doesn't like Caldera for some totally contrieved reason, they should go? Is it Caldera that sued Sklyarov? Is Caldera the one who has monopoly power over desktops or browsers? Is Caldera one of the companies that lobbied for the DMCA?
And why is that you pleople consistently forget all the stuff Caldera engineers have, indeed, contributed to the OSS community?
I think it would be fair if someone from the competition (RedHat, SuSe) set the record straight on this issue, because they know very well how much did Caldera engineers release under the GPL, and is now included both in the Linux kernel and in the userland.
And they don't even seem to realize. MS doesn't mind, actually, MS encourages Ximian to succeed, since MS controls the back-end, the authentication middleware.
Of course, if you see something wrong with what I just said, correct me. But I am afraid this is one of the smartest, most diabolic moves MS ever did: convince the OSS community that it's doing something cool, opensource and against MS, while it's actually helping MS.

Then, let's see about sound recording and editing: nottin'. OK, so how about softsynths: Timidity. Development discontinued, but it wasn't worth the effort anyway. And how about analog-modeling softsynths? Not one. OK, is there any drum-machine for Linux? Not that I know of. How about synthesizer module editors? None.
I will be happy if I am proven wrong, but if the app you want to stick to me is a CLI based, most musicians won't use it. Not because they can't, but because it really kills your creative work. That wasn't the problem with Timidity, since that's just a wave sampling synth, (it uses tonebanks), and there's really very little you can do with that, as far as interaction goes.
So anytime I want to create some music, I boot into Windows or BeOS. BTW, you wold be surprised at the amount of good musical freeware, for BeOS. Considering it's a platform that has about 100 to 1000 TIMES less users than Linux. And probably 10.000 times less users than Windows.

The large free hosting company Namezero, hosted on the Exodus network, has migrated its front end systems to Windows 2000, as has part of the Network Solutions domain registration system.
