I apologize for the harsh reply to you. In my experience, even 2/3 of "Professionals" and "Specialists" at any job or trade are just as good at their profession as your average grocery store cashier and bagger. Often their knowledge is out-dated, or they are closed-minded as a disguise for their arrogant pursuit of job security. I'm a computer programmer, and some of the stuff I see professionals (both contractors and in-house) doing would be laughable if it weren't such a sad state of affairs. I take EVERYTHING with a grain of salt, including both gospel theoretical physics and object-oriented software design theory. It just really annoys me when people look down their noses and try to leverage academic authority to discredit someone else, which I felt like you were doing. There are just as many lackeys in academia as anywhere else.

Good luck in school. I enjoyed it, may go back someday.

My problem with Matrix was the 3rd movie. They did such a good job of building a philosophical ground to stand on in "Reloaded" with the French speaking guy and so many programming references (even "the architect"'s lines were good if you were capable of following them).

But "Revolutions" just recycled a bunch of the not-so-great lines from the 2nd movie like "some things do change" and "how many times do I have to tell you, Trinity/Morpheus/Neo". The music at Trinities deathbed sounded like one of Tarranski's film scenes in Simone, and all the good programming references were rendered useless by "plot twists" such as the indian family and neo being able to "see the machines without seeing" in "the real world".

Maybe they felt like they had to "do the un-expected" again or something, but what they really did was ruin all of the nice logic and philosophy they had set up. Pile that on top of the totally crude way they decided to show the sentinel battle (flying around the room like a big snake while the mech gunners shoot it in the HEAD) and you get the biggest dissapointment in years.

  22. proposed new models are too short-sighted on Will TiVo Destroy Ad-Supported TV? · · Score: 2, Interesting

How long do you think it will take for people to achieve a "television-on-demand" peer-to-peer network similar to what kazaa has done with music? The infra-structure for this is already going in to place. How many hard-drives in tivo units are saving television programs across the US? With hard-drives, solid state memory, and DVD burners getting cheaper by the day, it won't be long until a group of tech savvy people on broadband connections bypass all standard tv show distribution methods in favor of peer-to-peer, maybe even bit-torrent type tv show distributions. (I can see another failing business model: commercials during the download time) And once they start it, its not gonna stop. The thing that worries me is that the cost of producing a high-quality television program utterly dwarfs the cost of producing a record. The economics are simple: if its free to consume, consumers aren't going to pay for it. It is conceivable how music will survive peer-to-peer (performing-artist != starving-artist), but how can quality tv shows? Will it come down to giving up privacy for happiness?
