    Well...my 12-yr old daughter has stickers (Hello Kitty) on hers, but then again, she's 12 and she puts stickers on EVERYTHING.

    I think a thumbdrive as a fashion statement is a sure sign of someone in a NON-technical field...

    Amen. While digital and HD are very nifty innovations, I would prefer that the adoption be left up to the incessant US need to keep up with the Jones'. Why on earth are we allowing politicians to mandate television broadcast methodology?!? Shouldn't they be spending their time trying to figure out how to tax public O2?

    I love reading Moore's stuff...especially the following line

    "let's let someone else have the Oscar"

    Darn big of him... Regardless, here's my fear:

    1) The documentary is shown on TV the night before the election.
    2) Bush loses for whatever reason (regardless of F911, I suspect the American people are ready to vote him off the island)
    3) Mike gets in front of a camera, claims responsibility for Bush losing, his ego grows even more, and he gets to act like his word is as unto God because his will controlled the election.

    Personally, I say let's let Limbaugh and Moore duke it out and ignore them both...

    Oh...regardless of the outcome of the election, I can squint and buy the chad arguments, but they taught me to fill in a circle in 1st friggin' grade. Don't vote until you READ THE BALLOT. If you are still unsure, ask for help.

    Hmm...need to punch more buttons folks...I show the majority of options as favoring Bush. However, this varies by criteria. Changing Chad options favors Bush in almost every circumstance. Changing optical options seems to favor Gore. In all cases, I went with the two or more agree rather than the more restrictive all agree. The other tab'd options seem to favor Bush. Dave

    Wow. I haven't used a floppy in years, and don't intend to use one anytime soon. I do have a few old pent 1 machines lying about, but even they will boot off of a CD. If I still had an old 486 motherboard system lying about that needed a floppy for alternative booting, I'd go to the nearest surplus store/garage sale and spend the $30 required to replace it with a crappy pent mobo system that will boot off of a CD.     I agree. Rural America isn't going to provide the magic solution to outsourcing. However, there is plenty of housing and land for housing available in rural America (even without cutting out more forests or paving the wetlands). Start in Missouri for low-cost available housing...     Yes, but these stories rarely seem to come out with an incident where "it has happened again". Rather someone is pushing a program, has an axe to grind whatever, and digs up instances to report. Hence, it's dreck. As far as doing something about it...let's see...I've chosen to allow my child access to the internet and IM. I'd better teach her how to behave on the net...nope..too obvious...did that...better teach her to not accept or respond to IMs that aren't in her list...nope...too obvious...did that....better teach her that anything on the net should be considered public and permanent...nope...too obvious...did that....better teach her to block unwanted users....nope too obvious did that...better teach her to turn the program off when beyond her best efforts it's nagging her...nope...too obvious...she figured that one out on her own... Bullying is old news. Teaching your kids common sense is a longtime responisibility...where is the story? Dave

    I actually remember the occurance and it only leads me to ask: Can the fact that the insult was delivered online have turned a normal girl to murder? My answer (unsupported by any psych citations): Probably not. The girl was screwed up to begin with. Manslaughter is defined because things can happen in a passionate moment. Sitting watching someone bleed to death is not a moment. The girl was screwed up to begin with, and I have no reason to assume she wouldn't have acted the same if the insult had been delivered in another manner. On a lighter note, Children will misbehave in any social arena. That they do so online is no suprise. We fall down, we learn, and we start again. Dave

    Wow...that's an open ended question. I use two items...a 256 meg thumb drive for quick and dirty transportation of bits of data and my rio karma (20gb) for data which is conistently moving between work and home (plus some bits that I just like to have handy at any given time). Dave

    I loved SuSE 9.0 and 9.1 shows great promise, but hasn't anyone else noticed that Samba client just doesn't work out of the box as shipped and their new disk mounting system has got to go. That being said, wicked fast and a nice upgrade...just need to fix the samba client and disk swapping. Dave

    That's great if it is true, but in many cases it isn't. During that time period, my wife needed a laptop. Windows was fine, but I neither wanted nor needed the Microsoft Works and Excel package that was bundled with almost every laptop available at the time. I didn't choose to buy those products, but there was no reasonable way for me to avoid purchasing them due to MS/OEM contracts...so, while I don't feel the need to claim refund for the Windows98 license, I do feel that that the Works/Excel situation requires redress. Dave That being said, send the vouchers to the Cal Schools...they need them more than I do...

    Think trusted computing platforms when thinking about your ability to run free alternatives on your cheap/free hardware. It's odd to think that hardware manufacturing will progress and evolve producing better products at cheaper rates but that the software run on the hardware should not be expected to undergo the same evolution.
