Hi, I worked for two years as a sysadmin in the Bulgarian legal system. Here are some thoughts on why the GP post matters:
1.We paid for this overpriced shugar-coated crap from our limited budget, while millions live on $200 per month and the government can't provide medical care for our children.
2.Sysadmins are often not allowed to install Linux/Unix. If they do it, it's in 5000 different ways - there are no official standards as in Munich or Massachusets.
3.Most people are not computer literate, including a lot of government employees. These people are now given new computers with Microsoft's software, and that's all they are going to learn, use, and expect the others to use. Market domination is so much easier while the market is still small.
That's why Gates is giving crippled Windows cheap in Asia. Once the users are hooked, he will make them pay the Microsoft tax every couple of years. I hope our Macedonian friends succeed, so we can pressure our own government to follow suit.
He-he, actually "vulgar" comes from Bulgar and used to mean "common people", "citizen". The Vulgate Bible was written in the commonly spoken language, the vulgar language. Germanic languages have probably gotten "volk" and "folk" from this word, also.
There were mass settlements of Bulgars in the Apennines at various times trough the Middle Ages. There are a lot of Bulgarian toponyms in Italy, for example Monte Bulgheria. Bulgarian derived family names are common in some places - Bulgari and Borgii are famous examples. The Latin language itself was "vulgarized" due to a large number of non-native speakers (mostly Germanic people, like the Langobards).
"Vulgar" acquired a negative meaning later: plain, plebeian, unrefined, coarse and rude. It is quite a common linguistic phenomenon. Actually, in "Genealogy of Morals" Nietzsche claims that the words for "bad" in all languages have evolved likewise.
The big pharmaceutical companies have to profit, that's the whole purpose behind those "save the African children" campaigns. Providing their villages with clean water will cost less than vaccinating them and it will help the fight against epidemic diseases more. Sanitation eradicated such diseases in Europe BEFORE large scale vaccinations were made.
Maybe it's worth the effort to make a GRUB boot floppy and set up one of the options in the start menu to install GRUB in the MBR. Floppies are fragile though, better have two, or a GRUB boot CD.
Why bother making up a joke, when a quote will do fine. Emphasis is mine:
"Is it possible that building a Unix operating system really only takes a few months --and, oh by the way, you don't even need the source code to do it?" Yes, it is possible, because there are published interface standards. I might have done it myself if it had occurred to me to try -- in fact, I have sometimes wondered why it didn't occur to me.
Back then, Mozilla was meant to be the killer of the free Mosaic browser. Hence, the name of the project. Netscape was founded by one of the creators of Mosaic with the idea of embracing and extending this new exciting opportunity:)
In the novel, citizenship was not limited by nationality, race, gender, education, financial status, etc. In order to be able to vote, one had to serve the society for 2 years and prove they were socially responsible and willing to sacrifice something for the right to wield the highest power in the state. Is that Fascist?
Even in American style democracies, some are not allowed to vote - young people below a certain age and some categories of criminals. The goal is the same: not to have socially irresponsible voters. Heinleins version of democracy is much better than the present media-led farce.
George Orwell said it best in his Politics and the English Language essay. You can find it on Project Guttenberg and other sites, here is the Australian link : http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks02/0200151.txt
Personally, when I see such buzz-word-infested langiage, I imagine an avalanche sliding down the mountain valley, long stripped of vegetation to stop it. That is the purpose of such a language - to get you in a programmed channel of thought.
Phoenicians would have built a wooden antelope gnu, the Babylonians - a zebra, and the Egyptians - a giraffe. Each one would throw flames at the others:)
He-he, judging from your low ID, you should have you found what Slashdot is a long time ago!
What I learned is, to stay away from (pseudo) political and (pseudo) religious discussions here. The most vocal geeks on Slashdot have the least knowledge, argumentative skills, and culture about these things. Brousing for funny comments helps, too:)
You compared Moore to Riefenstahl for his work and they took is as an accusation that Moore is a Nazi ?! Sancta Simplicitas...
I second that, it's a beautiful book. And, it does acknowledge Baigent and Leigh's work.
Who finds this funny, for God's sake?
Bloody Romans!

SP2 is still not "the crowd"? Why, I'd never...

BLASPHEMER!!!
Can't that be calculated somehow from the posts, why vote on it? And Yggdrasil, man?!
Or Frodo-and-Sam-dragging-their-asses-trough-Mordor scenes...

Way off-topic, I know. Whatever.
That which kills you makes you dead, though.
Even Linus had doubts about the outcome of the lawsuit. Something to do with the American legal system being unpredictable...

Halo, Nick!

Who reads posts from people with such ID anyway :)
