  2. SBC Installation on Ubuntu: Best Linux Desktop for Business? · · Score: 1
I ran into this same problem with SBC, until I checked the installation instructions for MacOSX. If you look there it tells you all the information you need to do it in Linux.

    1. From the Apple menu (in the top-left corner of the screen), select System Preferences.
    2. In the System Preferences window, select Network.
    3. From the "Location" drop-down menu, select New Location. You will be asked to name your location. You should name it something simple that you will remember, like "SBCYahoo."
    4. From the "Show" drop down menu, select Built-in Ethernet.
    5. Next, click on the PPPoE tab and fill out the fields.
      • Check Connect Using PPPoE.
      • Under "Account Name," enter sbcyahooreg@sbcglobal.net.
      • In the "Password" field, enter sbcyahooreg (Please note that passwords are case sensitive. If you enter an incorrect password, OS X does not generate an error message.)
    6. Click PPPoE Options.
      • Under "Session Options," make sure Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications is checked. The other Session Options choices are optional.
      • Under "Advanced Options," Send PPP echo packets should be checked.
    7. Click OK.
    8. Click Apply Now and close the window.
    9. Open Internet Explorer (included with OS X) and type the following URL in the Address field: https://sbcreg.sbcglobal.net
    10. Follow the directions on screen. When you are finished, write your new account information down and keep it in a safe place.

Once registration is complete, you'll need to enter your new account information in the "Network" settings under "System Preferences."

    1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences > Network.
    2. Select the location that you created in Step 3.
    3. From the "Show" drop down menu, select Built-in Ethernet.
    4. Click on the PPPoE tab.
      • Make sure Connect using PPPoE is checked.
      • In the "Account Name" field, Delete sbcyahooreg@sbcglobal.net. Enter your SBC Yahoo! Member ID (your entire email address, e.g. YourMemberID@sbcglobal.net)
      • In the "Password" field, replace sbcyahooreg with your own SBC Yahoo! password. OS X saves your password by default. (Please note that passwords are case sensitive.)
    5. Click Apply Now.
    6. Close the window and open Internet Explorer to access the Internet. If your homepage doesn't automatically default to yahoo.sbc.com,you mayset it to do so at this time.

If you cannot access the Registration Site while following the procedure above, take these additional steps:

    1. On your desktop, double-click the Macintosh HD icon.
    2. Double-click the Applications folder.
    3. Double-click the Internet Connect application.
    4. In the "Configuration" drop-down menu, make sure that Built-in Ethernet is selected.
      • Ensure that sbcyahooreg@sbcglobal.net is displayed under the "Name" field.
      • Re-enter sbcyahooreg in the "Password" field (you must enter the password in lowercase).
      • Click Connect.
    5. Once you are connected, open Internet Explorer and go to Step 9 above for registration instructions.

Herbert's response was that ideas were a dime a dozen; he had more story ideas than he could ever write in a lifetime. The hard part was the writing, not the ideas.
    Edison put it best:

For instance: I do not complain about the strong accents of Mexicans here in Southern California where I now live, because I lived for two years in Germany where, for much of that time, I could not reproduce the "r" sound in the back of my throat or consistently produce the correct "ch" sound (hard, or soft) when I was supposed to (as in "echt" being soft, and "Acht" being hard).

This is the ISBN for my 1999 edition. The title's word choice may not indicate a grasp of the English language's grammar, but it sure was a great help in solidifying some of the more complex grammatical constructions used by Germans in more "official" dialogue.

Before I got ahold of this book I had a terrible time understanding news broadcasts, for instance. This book is also good if you intend to learn to write grammatically correct German.

TFA shows steps in the right direction. So far most projects have tried to teach computers how to understand and produce natural language. The real solution lies in creating algorithms that allow computers to learn language. This is where studying how humans acquire language must be merged with computer science.

I can imagine the first successful computational linguist describing having a computer in his home for upwards of 10 years interacting with it and allowing it to interact with him and his family in order to learn the contects in which certain words carry specific meaning. Once the learning process is completed once the collected persistent memory could then theoretically be copied to other machines and devices so that they, too, may understand the language for which such training has been completed.

    • As we were sitting down the soft background music stopped and a cartoon started playing. Nothing nefarious about this yet.
    • The short was a commercial to watch the full version on Cartoon Network and lasted five minutes.
    • I realized that we were stuck watching 20 minutes of commercials wile waiting to the movie. The commercials prevented casual conversation because they were loud and distracting.
    • Finally the showtime came and there were another 25 minutes of commercials!

Blizzard in turn then terminates the seller's WoW account and everyone is happy.

Unfortunately upon closer inspection the termination is actually of the seller's auction account. What a shame.

Man that was a sweet system! It took me a year to learn enough to get it working right. Part of the problem was an ISA video capture/TV-tuner card that was keeping the mouse from working properly. When I finally took that card out after 6 months of tinkering and the mouse magically worked I was simultaneously angry and exstatic!
It was quite a learning experience at the time trying to get that stuff working, but it also gave her a pretty negative opinion of Linux.
I've learned similar lessons. Don't let people that are afraid of the "dark place" (console) watch while you work on setting up something new in Linux. My wife felt the same way after watching me working on setting up a freevo box, but now that it "just works" she never complains anymore. I think she was just scared because I enjoy testing things out and used to break my sandbox install once a month or so until about a year ago when I'd finally learned enough to know how to fix most of the "have to reinstal Linux" errors most newbies run into.

This is how my wife transitioned to Linux. Firefox, OO.o, Evolution, etc. was introduced to her one at a time until one day she realized my Linux desktop didn't look so different from her Win2000 desktop.

At her request I migrated all of her data over and wiped out Windows. She's just as happy now as she was before, and there was no shock. Crossover office picks up the slack on the one real showstopper, IE only website apps. Some financial institutions really need to get their acts together.
