The problem is between the desk and the chair. TinyC uses a subset of C, it's not to be used on real code;) what you really needed to do was install the development packages for your distribution, which are on the install media. Or you could have just saved yourself the hassle and installed the SSH packages... And Cygwin is by no means easier than doing it right on a Linux system.
You can use the ALSA drivers for your 1010, and use Ardour for the mixing/recording...
As for the VST stuff, you can use LADSPA, with Ardour's built-in host architecture, or you can use JACK Rack.
All this is connected together with the JACK Audio Connection Kit, a low-latency sound server.
It works just as well as the win32 solution.

wow, Aliens read/.? there being only about 6-7bn people on the planet, i think there must be some aliens cahching it to get that figure.
Assuming you have the rest of the hardware required to build 50 working boxes, you should build all 50 firewalls, put various OSes, firewalls, packet filters, antiviruses, and spam killers on them, all with different configurations, and chain them all together.
Aside from the decreased security of having loads of boxes forwarding packets to your main network, at least one of which is bound to have a vulnerability, you get to dig through 50 config files when you want to start a server:D
>>I reinstalled the whole operating system, from scratch, four times! I poked. I prodded. I tweaked. I FAQed. I How-To-ed. I searched Usenet. Nothing solved the problem.
um, this man gets paid to work with computers? it looks like he just hasn't get the ALSA daemon started, all he needs to do is go to "XYZ" distro's service/daemon control applet, and set it to start at boot.
it's not any more complicated than it would be in windows, and it's a hell of a lot easier than trying to get cheap nasty soundcards to work with windows, even the latest version. believe me, i've just been trying.
>>The support staff asked for some log files and diagnostic dumps. I sent them. They then had me manually set some software switches and edit other settings, but that made things worse--the system then lost all graphics modes. I could login only in text mode; otherwise, the system was unusable.
>>Things rapidly went downhill from there, but this column isn't about XYZ's weaknesses in tech support, but rather about a general Linux problem.
It obviously is about "XYZ's weaknesses in tech support", no self-repecting linux techie would screw up the xfree config because of a sound problem.

I just bought Queen's Greatest Hits at 12 from HMV in the UK. That's 3 Discs of classic tracks, 17 on each. 17 * 3 = 51 songs That's just over 23.5 pence per track ($0.43USD)
I think it's down to personal experience, everyone i've talked to has said that XP is just fine for them, but every M$ product i've ever used has failed me dramatically. When i boot XP on my box, it feels like i'm walking through treacle. First i've got to boot it, during which time i make a cup of coffee. Then i've got to wait for it to finish saying "Windows has detected new hardware", and "Windows is autmatically updating your computer", and "Hey, why don't you add you.net passport to XP?", and "New version of MSN Messenger available, upgrade now!", and.... The list goes on, a whole bunch of stuff that i don't want, don't need, didn't ask for and have no way of getting rid of. I do whatever i need to do, then reboot to my beautiful Gentoo system, no such problems, 4x faster, much prettier, and with much more features. In my experience, Linux is better. Feel free to stick with XP.

Yes, but the parent won't be hung-drawn-and quartered, they will sue the school for exposing them to "inappropriate" content, then sue EA Games for publishing "inappropriate" content and aiming it at kids, then sue whoever else they can squeeze money out of, and they will win.
Then the whole family goes home and watches EastEnders together.

So how well does windows run on a 486?
Do you think we could make a buffer overflow if we buy enough stuff?
And your total comes to:

We'll still have 2.88MB boot/root disks
maybe even smaller...

No, FC2 is already in beta, so they are at the stage of getting rid of bugs.
New features will be saved for FC3.

I just finished installing SuSE 9.0 on a K6-2 450Mhz about an hour ago.
It took about 3 hours, and it runs like treacle.
