  1. fire on Trepia: A Buddy List Of Strangers · · Score: 1

Yeah, remember when fire was invented?

It could be used to stay warm and cook food...

it could also be used to burn people and habitats...

    Illegal lighters, anyone?

  2. warmth is well defined on Ripping from Vinyl, Simplified · · Score: 1

Warmth is pretty easy to define.

Don't quote me on the numbers, it's been a while - but "warm" is simply when the high frequencies decay at least 60 ms faster than the lows. Then, it is "warm."

    Yum.

  3. games are a great way to relax on What Kind Of Computer To Bring To College? · · Score: 1

Depending on your major and your pace, you may find yourself busier than you ever imagined. I know personally, I can't even do all my work - I have to chose what I am going to do, and what I am not going to do.

I see people have breakdowns a few times each month. It's just part of being a music major. Games can be a great way to help relieve and deal with the stress.

That said - I second the recommendations, a laptop with GOOD batteries that you can work on and get stuff done (I have a 500mhz ibook that can hardly keep up with my typing - I'm more productive using it than anything) and it is so nice to go to the coffee shop and sit on the deck, and get stuff done.

Also, I have a computer in my room with afb/samba/ftp/ssh/web/ as many access points as possible. I use it to back up work from the laptop, and access and save stuff from all over campus. It's extremely useful, almost a necesity, considering all the problems people around here have with zip disks. I also use it remotely.

Also consider a variety of platforms. I have my mac laptop, linux server, and windows desktop. For my marching band class I have to use software that only runs on the mac. Saves me from the noisy lab - thank god!

So, yes go out out meet people and have fun, and remember the fitness center is not only for you to become hot, but to check out other hot people...

Have as many options open as possible. That means laptop + server + games! The works!

  13. slavery on Linus on DRM · · Score: 1

Slavery isn't inherently evil. It's the usage and if it goes against your morals, ethics and general desires, if it is good or not.

  16. music too! on Advice for a Dad-To-Be? · · Score: 1

I've read no posts about including music in the upbringing of your child. Any music that is heard often in the womb will result in a very special experience for the child if he ever hears it again once born.

The carseat is for cars - otherwise, keep your baby close to you, on your body. When you walk and move, the baby learns rhythm and balance. Then be amazed when the child is old enough to walk, and when placed on two feet for the first time, walks away on his own. Hey, maybe those African tribes in the middle of no where actually do know something.

Studies show musical taste is determined by age 3, so enjoy a wide variety of music so you child may enjoy a wide variety of music as he grows.

Best of all, make music with your child (do trust your childs mood when engaging in such activities - if he feels like it, go for it, if not, let it go). Your singing, or guitar playing, or drumming, or whatever you do - it IS good enough for you and your child. Sing and play games, and dance around, and have fun! Music is all about celebrating life!

  18. contemporary education practices on A New Approach to Teaching Science · · Score: 1

In the recent 50 years or so, there's a very visible trend where textbooks get prettier, topics get more lightweight, school gets to be more "fun" instead of education, and the result (people's knowledge of science) gets worse and worse.

There is a new measure of scholastic success around; it's looking at the students after they have jobs, and seeing how successful they are. Everything the school does is geared towards producing the most successful person tens of years down the road.

Many people were very successful in "hard" environments where the text was boring and so was the lecture. However, many people were NOT! Education is not about getting to an elite few - it's for EVERYONE, and thus it is important for it to appeal to everyone. Also, because students spend so much time in school, moral and social issues are addressed as well; it's about growing holistically.

I am a music education undergrad in Ohio and I am so impressed with the direction of the education here; think internships starting in the early grades, long term interdisciplinary student designed projects, and lots of interaction with peers, teachers, and parents!

  19. sex is natural and beautiful on Dismal Failure of Internet Filters In Australia · · Score: 2, Insightful

I love the tabs... but the most important thing is ease of exchange of information. For my friends, aim file transfer is all they know, so if I want to communicate with them, that is what I must use. They're too busy to learn something new, and I'm not sure I really care, personally.

Ahhh but why not? You are not billed per tab. The only real estate here is screen real estate, and I do think with most of us using 1280x1024 type resolutions, there is plenty of screen real estate for tabs. So, use them! Open 40 new links in new tabs. Move back and forth easily between discussion group posts. It's excellent - take advantage!
