I could say the same about Iron Maiden, Nirvana, Snoop Dogg, etc. Maybe you should try listening to their earlier stuff to get an idea of why they became famous instead of their later stuff to get an idea of what kind of music most people will pay money for. I highly recommend their first few albums, some of the best rap ever imho.
Thats a fair enough statement. Certainly what i say isnt the absolute truth. I do not subscribe to absolute truth. I've heard some of outkasts other hits from previous albums. I've always respected them for being something different in an industry that wants clones.
No i havent heard their previous albums... So i'm only basising my opinion on their latest. There are good songs on there, and i DO love their adventureous style. They brought music back into music in many respects. But i find the songs for the most part, aimed towards females directly and its jut fun to sit there and listen to it.

Lets remember that film is often color corrected during editing. Its very possible that a tie shifted color. Was he wearing the same exact clothing?
Did the lighting and tone of the overall shot change in comparison to the other?
This is often done to promote a mood. On a significant point, a director will alter the color to further drive home a point. Color happens more on a subconcious level so... Who knows. Its quite possible that the shot was color corrected.
Its also quite possible that it is infact different speeches. And that doesnt quite make it wrong... maybe factual, but whatever charlie said... charlie said.
Actually their new album is quite good. Atleast you know where they're coming from. Their lyrics reflect their politics. Which i think is right on.
The new album has some very good songs. The beasties are perhaps a little more innocent in style compared to todays "i'm a big rich mother fucker driving a bentley" rap. Frankly that stuff is so sickening. The fantasy world the fans of that shit live in, is simply put... tragic.
The Beasties are as real as it gets and so what they have an older style.... Its still pretty dam good. They leave the audience feeling good, rather than worshiping the $ like a false god, only to go home to their lower-middle class lives, pretending that they're jay-z. Yeah that gets you far in life.
As for outkast, i never got how people love those guys. Someone in the record industry gave me their latest cd and i felt like a fag listening to it:) I'm sorry the whole first cd is a ballad to women.

First, please don't mod me into oblivion, I know a lot of people swear by this show but I'm one of many people who just didn't get it and I'm entitled to explain why.
That said, I saw Ghost in the Shell 1 and never was as bored in all my life. Sure the animation is good and the visuals are atmospheric, but the English dialogue was bordering on the hypnotic. Big overlong monologues that go on and on and on..... zzzzzz. And I got halfway through the film and still hadn't figured out what the hell they meant by a 'ghost.' I kept asking, 'okay, ghosts are an important part of all of this, I get it, now will you kindly tell us what the f@*# a ghost is please?' But no. Just more pseudo-intellectual waffle.
I strongly warn against anyone watching this stuff if you want to get into anime for the first time. This yawn-fest is not representative of anime. Watch Cowboy Bebop [sonypictures.com] instead. It's a lot more fun, the animated cityscapes are stunning, and it doesn't take itself very seriously.

Most HDTV broadcasts are nothing more than scaled up versions of standard NTSC footage. ( m not talking about your HDTV line doubling)
I'm talking about the taping of actual shows in HDTV.
Most shows that do film in HDTV... They have 1 HDTV camera at best, while the rest are standard NTSC cameras that have their signal scaled up to meet the HDTV standard res. Then they simply claim it as "HDTV" When it is not. Most shows dont even have the HD cameras or editing equiptment. They simply scale it up before sending out the HDTV signal.
The cost for HDTV is too much for even major broadcasters to justify with the small number of HDTV viewers.
DTV's signal has become more and more compressed as they add channels. I recently looked at my fathers DTV signal and thought it looked like Reel Video. It was really bad. Its just so compressed so that they can fit their channels in their limited bandwidth.
Cablevision here claims Digital IO (100$ a month) is HDTV digital cable. When the truth is less than 10 channels are HD. And again you have the problem of shows simply just SCALING UP existing shows, or even NEW shows, claiming their HDTV when they're not.
HDTV is not worth it yet. Its over priced and the cable companies are out of their fucking mind price wise.
This is just another attempt to inspire stock investor confidence in new technology.

This is very true. Sega has learned this the hard way and now look where they are.
Sega's consoles always came out first, and they always failed. The dreamcast was and still is a fantastic system with a pretty decent library of games, and even it could not complete.
Launching early does not work. There are major problems with launching early. The biggest being, launch games. Playstation 2 had this problem, but it also had the playstation 1 before it to secure the sale of ps2.
Xbox 1 really isnt that successfull in my own eyes. It lacks Japanese software, and that is a huge factor. Not only have the Japanese turned their back on it, even if they were interested, they wouldnt have games that reflect their own cultural interests. Japanese games are designed a little nicer than US games in my opinion, and the art is obviously different in style.
The xbox has some nice games coming out in november but all of the biggest games coming out for the xbox (halo2 aside) will be available on all of the other consoles.
So exclusivity is an issue. PS2 has some serious ass kicking titles that never leave the PS2 and those that do, leave half a year or more after their ps2 release.
Xbox isnt that great. I have one and its modded. I'm also a game developer. kind of funny i think. But the xbox rarely impresses me, and i often find myself wanting ps2 games more.
BUT the really good games on xbox, are really good, and they outshine the competition graphically. So the xbox has that... but its support thats the issue.
Launching early... its just not going to help them game a market place. They need games. They need support. As good as the Xbox2 will be, PS3 will be pretty bold and hold its own. Look at Sony's PSP. They are dedicated to pushing the industry and Sony knows how to do it right.
But who knows... Nintendo only really held the first place spot for 2 generations... Perhaps its time for sony to lose it?

Will high end digital cameras become the Ferraris while low end 2mega pixel ccd cameras remain the hondas?

Which would perhaps create a huge problem for folks like me who want higher megapixel cameras with more control, for standard low cost prices.
The growing need for more megapixels, is clarity and resolution.
I can tell the difference very easily between a 2 megapixel and a 5 megapixel. You can clearly tell the difference between 5 and 10:)
Resolution is the first noticeable difference.
But also whats important is color, clarity and sharpness.
Both improve dramatically with higher megal pixel CCDs. And most cameras use a single CCD for RGB, which creates even more color problems.
Ideally we would all want a camera that has a CCD for each color, and luminance.
The difference becomes very noticeable when you use a 3 CCD chip camera in video productions, and i've had family members look at my video productions and say "WOW.. That is a nice camera" I say "Its a professional grade camera" they say "I CAN SEE!"
So its noticeable. Perhaps they're marveling at my editing ability, the color correction, the effects work... (i am a professional 3d character animator, modeller, video editor and occasional director... ) So perhaps its the presentation that makes it all look "proffesional", perhaps its the shutter settings i use, and the fact that i know how to use a camera from a lighting and composition point of view... But they notice a difference.
If you go to dpreview.net and look at the reviews for some of the highest end digital cameras, you will notice the difference quick. The clarity is remarkable. Remember we're transforming a visual into a digital signal. The standard problems apply. Color tones, Aliasing, etc.
Higher megapixels, better CCDs, multiple CCDS.. will improve clarity and your 2 megapixel camera which may be fine for you, it may be convient and compact and thus still usefull... but the quality will be dramatically less than digital cameras 3 years from now.
Also the issue is artistic works. Most people point and shoot. They dont understand lighting, film speeds, shutters, and the effect they have on imagery. They dont understand composition, they dont understand how a camera works. They just want to take pictures of their family on vacation at disney world.
Now if they did know all of those things, those pictures could look remarkable. But they require a camera that allows you to tinker with a lot of settings to optimize the image. And those who know how, are those who stand out as good photographers. Its what seperates a pro from a novice. And it usually requires much more complex equiptment.
On a consumer level, you can guy a canon g3, or g5 and have plenty of control to do some nice imagery. I mean breathtaking stuff, especailly if you know how to controll all of the features. But those features will improve over time as well as the CCDs in the camera. So if you really know what you're doing, you'll demand a lot of percise control, but acts as best as it can. And since its all digital, those controls and features can improve dramatically. They are "digital" versions of analogue camera functions. For example "Film Speed":) What the hell is that?! Theres no film! hehe Well once they improve the "FILM SPEED" function, we'll have better low light capability. Which really simply translates to, better CCD quality that can capture low light better because there is no film speed, cuz there aint no film:)
I bought ICO for Ps2 when it came out. I beat it in one sitting. It was the best gaming experience that i've ever had, and i've been a gamer from the start of the industry. It is a work of art. It was so moving, and so good... I traded it in like a big dummy... I thought i would never play it again because it was so emotionally incredible, and i would never relive the experience that you get when you first play it.
Fast forward 2 years. I have been ranting and raving about how good the game is to everyone i know, and they never heard of it. They never played it. Only a handful of folks out there actually know of ICO for p2,and they all agree that its a work of art.
WEll.. I searched hard... and FINALLY there was an ORIGINAL version at my local EB. They had 1 copy. It was brand new they said. So i ran down to EB instantly to buy it. When i get there, they cant find it. After searching hard... they discover it.
They bring out a disc, thats shrink wrapped with the manual. (No BOX) The disc doesnt look too new... But it doesnt look used either. 10 bucks... He says.. since he cant find the box. I ask him if its new... He says yes, sometimes we do this because we put the box on the shelf if its our only copy.
(A friend of mine's younger brother that worked at EB for a period of time, said that this is a legit policy at EB and the game probably is new.)
Well i bought the game... Its rare enough... So i had to have it again and he took 10 bucks off the price.
I get home i call up EB customer service asking if the policy is legit, because i thought it was used, being sold as new. They guy didnt answer my question and was a complete dick about it. Dick at EB customer service says "What do you want me to do about it" He's practically yelling, and i was simply asking in a police manner. I told him "I dont know, i was just wondering if this is normal" And the guy asks "if they said its new, its new" and continued to be a total ass.

Now i'm not insane:) ICO is a collectors game from the point of view of many. It really is one of the finest games ever made. I wanted a copy to hold on to for life, just as you would a fine car, or a babe ruth baseball.
The game has meaning to me, and others. I know that i'll have to make a back up of the game just to make sure it does last with me for a life time. Because hell i wont ever find a legit copy of it 10 years from now. The only place i'll be able to find it, is on the net. Either used by someone insane like me who loves the game... Or by folks who keep the emulation scene alive... where Roms that are historic are distributed, emulated, maintained for their historic value. Their artistic value.
If games are like Hollywood... Why arent they being preserved like Hollywood films?

Auto Patching seems like a good thing but there are cases where one would run into problems. For example. Avid Express Pro users would become very angry at XP because there is a Microsoft XP hotfix that creates a redraw bug in Avid EXpress Pro, thus making it useless. Avid recommends to not install this hotfix obviously.
So there are reasons to not install certain fixes, or new fixes. Not all firewall software will function after a major auto patch... Perhaps an auto update would create system instability in that situation. (It has in the past)

Weta did have digital doubles for their actors. Of course they wouldnt have the level of detail that Gollum requires for upclose acting. But from a far, even Legolas and the other digital doubles looked fake due to their actions.
Legolas tackling that elephant creature... it just doesnt move or look real in any manner at all. Its unbeleivable from just about every angle and to top it off, the animation wasnt natural.
Even Spider-man who is basically a human form without the expressive face... was animated poorly in spider-man 1.
Now take Jackie Chan from 94 and earlier... (when he could move) There is a real human being doing amazing things. Infact hes surrounded by a whole team of human beings doing amazing, REAL stunts and fight scenes.
Occasionally they'll use a wire here and there for effect in Jackie's movies and yet its still beleivable, and its strengthed by the fact taht you actually beleive that is Jackie doing all of those things.
Its almost a magic trick... You're expecting a real person to do these things, then they do it, and wow.. amazing. What you missed is one of the shots had a stuntman doubling Jackie. You missed it because 95$ of the films stunts was infact Jackie.

I could say the same about Iron Maiden, Nirvana, Snoop Dogg, etc. Maybe you should try listening to their earlier stuff to get an idea of why they became famous instead of their later stuff to get an idea of what kind of music most people will pay money for. Thats a fair enough statement. Certainly what i say isnt the absolute truth. I do not subscribe to absolute truth. I've heard some of outkasts other hits from previous albums. I've always respected them for being something different in an industry that wants clones.
No i havent heard their previous albums... So i'm only basising my opinion on their latest. There are good songs on there, and i DO love their adventureous style. They brought music back into music in many respects. But i find the songs for the most part, aimed towards females directly and its jut fun to sit there and listen to it.

Lets remember that film is often color corrected during editing. Its very possible that a tie shifted color. Was he wearing the same exact clothing?
Did the lighting and tone of the overall shot change in comparison to the other?
This is often done to promote a mood. On a significant point, a director will alter the color to further drive home a point. Color happens more on a subconcious level so... Who knows. Its quite possible that the shot was color corrected.
Its also quite possible that it is infact different speeches. And that doesnt quite make it wrong... maybe factual, but whatever charlie said... charlie said.
Actually their new album is quite good. Atleast you know where they're coming from. Their lyrics reflect their politics. Which i think is right on.

The new album has some very good songs. The beasties are perhaps a little more innocent in style compared to todays "i'm a big rich mother fucker driving a bentley" rap. Frankly that stuff is so sickening. The fantasy world the fans of that shit live in, is simply put... tragic.
The Beasties are as real as it gets and so what they have an older style.... Its still pretty dam good. They leave the audience feeling good, rather than worshiping the $ like a false god, only to go home to their lower-middle class lives, pretending that they're jay-z. Yeah that gets you far in life.
As for outkast, i never got how people love those guys. Someone in the record industry gave me their latest cd and i felt like a fag listening to it

First, please don't mod me into oblivion, I know a lot of people swear by this show but I'm one of many people who just didn't get it and I'm entitled to explain why.
That said, I saw Ghost in the Shell 1 and never was as bored in all my life. Sure the animation is good and the visuals are atmospheric, but the English dialogue was bordering on the hypnotic. Big overlong monologues that go on and on and on..... zzzzzz. And I got halfway through the film and still hadn't figured out what the hell they meant by a 'ghost.' I kept asking, 'okay, ghosts are an important part of all of this, I get it, now will you kindly tell us what the f@*# a ghost is please?' But no. Just more pseudo-intellectual waffle.
I strongly warn against anyone watching this stuff if you want to get into anime for the first time. This yawn-fest is not representative of anime. Watch Cowboy Bebop [sonypictures.com] instead. It's a lot more fun, the animated cityscapes are stunning, and it doesn't take itself very seriously.

Most HDTV broadcasts are nothing more than scaled up versions of standard NTSC footage. (

I'm talking about the taping of actual shows in HDTV.
Most shows that do film in HDTV... They have 1 HDTV camera at best, while the rest are standard NTSC cameras that have their signal scaled up to meet the HDTV standard res. Then they simply claim it as "HDTV" When it is not. Most shows dont even have the HD cameras or editing equiptment. They simply scale it up before sending out the HDTV signal.
The cost for HDTV is too much for even major broadcasters to justify with the small number of HDTV viewers.
DTV's signal has become more and more compressed as they add channels. I recently looked at my fathers DTV signal and thought it looked like Reel Video. It was really bad. Its just so compressed so that they can fit their channels in their limited bandwidth.
Cablevision here claims Digital IO (100$ a month) is HDTV digital cable. When the truth is less than 10 channels are HD. And again you have the problem of shows simply just SCALING UP existing shows, or even NEW shows, claiming their HDTV when they're not.
HDTV is not worth it yet. Its over priced and the cable companies are out of their fucking mind price wise.
This is just another attempt to inspire stock investor confidence in new technology.

This is very true. Sega has learned this the hard way and now look where they are.
Sega's consoles always came out first, and they always failed. The dreamcast was and still is a fantastic system with a pretty decent library of games, and even it could not complete.
Launching early does not work. There are major problems with launching early. The biggest being, launch games. Playstation 2 had this problem, but it also had the playstation 1 before it to secure the sale of ps2.
Xbox 1 really isnt that successfull in my own eyes. It lacks Japanese software, and that is a huge factor. Not only have the Japanese turned their back on it, even if they were interested, they wouldnt have games that reflect their own cultural interests. Japanese games are designed a little nicer than US games in my opinion, and the art is obviously different in style.
The xbox has some nice games coming out in november but all of the biggest games coming out for the xbox (halo2 aside) will be available on all of the other consoles.
So exclusivity is an issue. PS2 has some serious ass kicking titles that never leave the PS2 and those that do, leave half a year or more after their ps2 release.
Xbox isnt that great. I have one and its modded. I'm also a game developer. kind of funny i think. But the xbox rarely impresses me, and i often find myself wanting ps2 games more.
BUT the really good games on xbox, are really good, and they outshine the competition graphically. So the xbox has that... but its support thats the issue.
Launching early... its just not going to help them game a market place. They need games. They need support. As good as the Xbox2 will be, PS3 will be pretty bold and hold its own. Look at Sony's PSP. They are dedicated to pushing the industry and Sony knows how to do it right.
But who knows... Nintendo only really held the first place spot for 2 generations... Perhaps its time for sony to lose it?

Perhaps this is true... But there is a difference and quality is greatly improved. We're not talking just about resolution, but clarity of colors, sharpness, and so forth.
The question is price.
Will high end digital cameras become the Ferraris while low end 2mega pixel ccd cameras remain the hondas?
Will the higher end technology "Trickle down" Or will the mass market of mom and pops who simply point and shoot, say "we dont need another one"
Which would perhaps create a huge problem for folks like me who want higher megapixel cameras with more control, for standard low cost prices.
The growing need for more megapixels, is clarity and resolution.

I can tell the difference very easily between a 2 megapixel and a 5 megapixel. You can clearly tell the difference between 5 and 10
Resolution is the first noticeable difference.
But also whats important is color, clarity and sharpness.
Both improve dramatically with higher megal pixel CCDs. And most cameras use a single CCD for RGB, which creates even more color problems.
Ideally we would all want a camera that has a CCD for each color, and luminance.
The difference becomes very noticeable when you use a 3 CCD chip camera in video productions, and i've had family members look at my video productions and say "WOW.. That is a nice camera" I say "Its a professional grade camera" they say "I CAN SEE!"
So its noticeable. Perhaps they're marveling at my editing ability, the color correction, the effects work... (i am a professional 3d character animator, modeller, video editor and occasional director
If you go to dpreview.net and look at the reviews for some of the highest end digital cameras, you will notice the difference quick. The clarity is remarkable. Remember we're transforming a visual into a digital signal. The standard problems apply. Color tones, Aliasing, etc.
Higher megapixels, better CCDs, multiple CCDS.. will improve clarity and your 2 megapixel camera which may be fine for you, it may be convient and compact and thus still usefull... but the quality will be dramatically less than digital cameras 3 years from now.
Also the issue is artistic works. Most people point and shoot. They dont understand lighting, film speeds, shutters, and the effect they have on imagery. They dont understand composition, they dont understand how a camera works. They just want to take pictures of their family on vacation at disney world.
Now if they did know all of those things, those pictures could look remarkable. But they require a camera that allows you to tinker with a lot of settings to optimize the image. And those who know how, are those who stand out as good photographers. Its what seperates a pro from a novice. And it usually requires much more complex equiptment.
On a consumer level, you can guy a canon g3, or g5 and have plenty of control to do some nice imagery. I mean breathtaking stuff, especailly if you know how to controll all of the features. But those features will improve over time as well as the CCDs in the camera. So if you really know what you're doing, you'll demand a lot of percise control, but acts as best as it can. And since its all digital, those controls and features can improve dramatically. They are "digital" versions of analogue camera functions. For example "Film Speed"

:) ICO is a collectors game from the point of view of many. It really is one of the finest games ever made. I wanted a copy to hold on to for life, just as you would a fine car, or a babe ruth baseball.

I bought ICO for Ps2 when it came out. I beat it in one sitting. It was the best gaming experience that i've ever had, and i've been a gamer from the start of the industry. It is a work of art. It was so moving, and so good... I traded it in like a big dummy... I thought i would never play it again because it was so emotionally incredible, and i would never relive the experience that you get when you first play it.
Fast forward 2 years. I have been ranting and raving about how good the game is to everyone i know, and they never heard of it. They never played it. Only a handful of folks out there actually know of ICO for p2,and they all agree that its a work of art.
WEll.. I searched hard... and FINALLY there was an ORIGINAL version at my local EB. They had 1 copy. It was brand new they said. So i ran down to EB instantly to buy it. When i get there, they cant find it. After searching hard... they discover it.
They bring out a disc, thats shrink wrapped with the manual. (No BOX) The disc doesnt look too new... But it doesnt look used either. 10 bucks... He says.. since he cant find the box. I ask him if its new... He says yes, sometimes we do this because we put the box on the shelf if its our only copy.
(A friend of mine's younger brother that worked at EB for a period of time, said that this is a legit policy at EB and the game probably is new.)
Well i bought the game... Its rare enough... So i had to have it again and he took 10 bucks off the price.
I get home i call up EB customer service asking if the policy is legit, because i thought it was used, being sold as new. They guy didnt answer my question and was a complete dick about it. Dick at EB customer service says "What do you want me to do about it" He's practically yelling, and i was simply asking in a police manner. I told him "I dont know, i was just wondering if this is normal" And the guy asks "if they said its new, its new" and continued to be a total ass.
Well What do i do about getting a box for a NEW game that i bought?

The game has meaning to me, and others. I know that i'll have to make a back up of the game just to make sure it does last with me for a life time. Because hell i wont ever find a legit copy of it 10 years from now. The only place i'll be able to find it, is on the net. Either used by someone insane like me who loves the game... Or by folks who keep the emulation scene alive... where Roms that are historic are distributed, emulated, maintained for their historic value. Their artistic value.
If games are like Hollywood... Why arent they being preserved like Hollywood films?

Auto Patching seems like a good thing but there are cases where one would run into problems. For example. Avid Express Pro users would become very angry at XP because there is a Microsoft XP hotfix that creates a redraw bug in Avid EXpress Pro, thus making it useless. Avid recommends to not install this hotfix obviously.
So there are reasons to not install certain fixes, or new fixes. Not all firewall software will function after a major auto patch... Perhaps an auto update would create system instability in that situation. (It has in the past)

Weta did have digital doubles for their actors. Of course they wouldnt have the level of detail that Gollum requires for upclose acting. But from a far, even Legolas and the other digital doubles looked fake due to their actions.
Legolas tackling that elephant creature... it just doesnt move or look real in any manner at all. Its unbeleivable from just about every angle and to top it off, the animation wasnt natural.
Even Spider-man who is basically a human form without the expressive face... was animated poorly in spider-man 1.
Now take Jackie Chan from 94 and earlier... (when he could move) There is a real human being doing amazing things. Infact hes surrounded by a whole team of human beings doing amazing, REAL stunts and fight scenes.
Occasionally they'll use a wire here and there for effect in Jackie's movies and yet its still beleivable, and its strengthed by the fact taht you actually beleive that is Jackie doing all of those things.
Its almost a magic trick... You're expecting a real person to do these things, then they do it, and wow.. amazing. What you missed is one of the shots had a stuntman doubling Jackie. You missed it because 95$ of the films stunts was infact Jackie.
