I can only wonder how high that percentage has to go before we start making plans on how to avoid the posible impact.
Sadly, in the end it will all come down to politics. The president (any president of any country with enough power to do something about this) will want to have certainty before taking the risk of being labeled the greatest hero or the greatest fool in history. And I am not even taking international politics into account.
I guess that it all depends on how high we value life itself.
I send my regards and sympathies to your people. Lets pray for a quick recuperation of the area. Its good to read from fellow slashdotters that survived this catastrophe.
Did I just fire 223 bullets, or 224? Do you feel lucky punk?
Those odds are alarmingly high, and if we plan on doing something to save ourselves from possible doom we should start now! Perhaps we should alert the media, they love sensationalistic stories and most people do too.
The other option would be to wait 24 years and see what happens. In my opinion that is utterly stupid.
To achieve with Firefox the functionality that Opera offers out of the box I have to download a dozen plugins. When that is done, Firefox is very slugish and the features don't feel tightly integrated. (I am using a slow computer)
Every feature in Opera feels very natural and intuitive, it doesn't feel bolted on. It is a beautifully refined browser and works great both on Linux and Windows. Of course, a pluggable Opera would be heaven:-).
I still always recommend Firefox as an IE replacement, but for power users I will recommend Opera.

Adolfo
About the ads. The google ads take half the screen real estate that the graphical ones take and, to be honest, I have found them to be usefull more than once.
I use.NET when I want to develop the application faster. It is a lot easier to make web services on.NET than on Java. The bad part is that you are limiting yourserlf to MS servers. Of course, the database servers and everything else can be run on whatever else you like. The client can be in.NET, JAVA, a browser, it doesn't really matter.
When I develop for portability I use JAVA. I can run it on any server that I like. Then again, how many times are you going to switch servers?
Because of what I mentiones above I find myself more and more using hybrid systems. Linux for NSF and file storage and.NET for the app servers.
A good piece of software is a good piece of software whether it runs on Windows, Linux, Mac or your Toaster. It is even better if it is open source or free.
Nobody is forcing you to use it, but it is good to have more choices.
How many "she is hot" posts are required to give her the Slashdot Certified certification. With a NY Times article about her skills and a Slashdot story that comments endlessly on her looks, she must be walking on air. And I must say that these 15 minutes of fame are more than well deserved.:-)
I understand your point of view on the young people that call themselves hackers and I couldn't agree more. Too many script kiddies brag about being hackers. I make a living by developing software solutions and wouldn't dare to call myself a hacker.
At the moment of my post I perceived your comment as being elitist, and yet, I share your views on the subject. Perhaps I should think twice and post once.
...my little brother is a bit of a budding hacker. He's really into Blender and Python...
Emphasis on Python. Therefore, by your standards he IS a budding hacker. Emphasis on budding also. We have to be carefull not to become bullies and assholes you know.
A shinny new cliche on a first post is a very seductive force to be reckoned with, and an even bigger heartbreak when it gets modded down as a troll. I feel your pain.
It has been a long time since we wanted to ask you:
- Why am I fat!
- Why am I bald!
- Why am I poor!
- Why am I old!
Props for the ones that can find the inspiration for my silly questions;-)
It is easy to see why Will is such an endearing character. A child actor (I loved stand by me) and geek icon who likes to share his thoughts with anyone that cares to listen without being an asshole like the rest, is a rare find.

PS. I still think that you could kick Lucas Wolenczek's ass anytime.;-)
Using very large golden gradient shadowed GIFs each worth over 4K to represent the numbers 1 - 10 in a "Top Ten Persistent Design Flaws" webpage. It not only looks ugly, makes the website slower consuming more bandwidth, but it also takes away a good chunk of the left side of the page.
The perfect woman is the one that got away.;-)

Ok... I am officially depressed. I guess I'll settle for a 7.
I personally like web services with rich clients.
The business logic stays centralized and the people have a "better" experience on their desktops. I still don't understand the advantage that one would get by upgrading from W2K to WXP in a work environment.
I bet that the russians are back home reading this article and saying something like damn capitalist pigs!

I've been using GTK for a while and gotten to like it. I'd like to know what does QT have to offer that GTK doesn't.

A couple of years ago they were getting bashed for bundling free software. Now they are being bashed for not bundling it for free?

Cars killed horses. Phone killed the telegraph. TV killed the radio star.
The jobs haven't been lost, they just moved to another market. Should we stop progress just because it creates products that replace others?

This is my first troll. Yet I must do it.
I'll do almost anything to stop spammers.
I don't care if I am reducing myself to their levels.
They did not care, neither shall I. They have gone too far. Expect no mercy.
Fight!
