  1. Re:Why not just use TrueCrypt? on Universal Disk Encryption Spec Finalized · · Score: 1

I thought it was a fact that dedicated hardware (properly designed) is ALWAYS faster than software.

I plead ignorance here as I don't know much about RAID but I wonder if the reason software raid (can) be faster is because they have poorly implemented drivers? Or conflicting design with how Linux operators?

If this is in fact not the case would you perhaps point me to further evidence of such cases as I think I would find it very interesting.

  2. this could be a very good thing! on YouTube To Allow Self-Serve Ads For Major Media Players · · Score: 1

Everyone seems to want to host/control their own content. Many of them are offering their content for free just to reserve some level of control. If youtube allows them to cut the cost of hosting their own content AND make a profit while doing it why would anyone not allow youtube to host their content?

As youtube starts to focus on increasing the quality of what they stream we could potentially see a new alternative to cable/sat TV and maybe finally get an à la carte service we so desperately want!

One last thing I wanted to mention is how youtube really is the evolution of public access TV. We've lost a lot of it over the years and even more so when we finally go digital. Why doesn't youtube get government funding for hosting this content?

We're already spending money on this war. Let's spend a little more to ensure that the security we are providing is worth it. I can't see our current tactic of just waiting it out working anytime soon.

Let's bring over a large group of Iraqi people (volunteers of course) to the US. The purpose to give them an education and provide them with the skills they can use to repair Iraq. Also, to give them a sense of what life COULD be like in their country. Once they are ready to work they return to Iraq where they hopefully have a strong desire to repair/better their home lands.

To me this seems like a much better way to stabilize the country than simply wait for the fighting to stop on it's own. Not only that but we have the potential to actually learn from those we educate.

  21. I like Netflix but they're not perfect.... on Netflix Changes Its Mind, Will Keep Profiles Feature · · Score: 0

I've been a Netflix subscribe since early 2000 using a 4disc plan at ~$19 a month. About a year ago I began seeing these upgrade deals when browsing. For just $x.xx you can upgrade to a five disc plan! I forget the exact number but it was under $2.

So I thought great! I'll upgrade right now and did. They never gave me the exact price of my new plan until AFTER I agreed to it. So when I discovered the $2 was only to cover the cost of the partial month upgrade and my new monthly fee was around $30 a month I said screw that and downgraded back to my 4disc plan. Well, the current 4disc plan is like $24 a month and their customer service said it was impossible to go back to my normal $19 price. Instead I was told I'd receive a credit on my bill for 6months to offset my monthly fee to my original $19 amount.

Well, as you can guess I never did get my credit.. I'm sure if I did enough bitching they just might have given me my original $19 plan back..

Truth is I'm lazy and I haven't been really keeping up with 4discs so I downgraded to a 2disc plan. I also kept in mind that they did add value with the streaming service and turn around time has been GREATLY increased since 2000 so I'm not altogether upset with them.

The truth is they're just as sneaky as any other company out there. I'm guessing the real reason they kept profiles is a very smart programmer figured out how to deal with profiles.

Pot smoking seems to be a popular example for this. While technically illegal it really shouldn't be.
