Even the MSRP is only $993. $5/W is usually a close enough price for these panels, less if you buy in bulk.
I agree with most of the rest of your post, however they probably are not adding additional batteries (most likely whatever they are running already has a UPS/generator system in place).
possibly $300,000 each for a 500kW inverter if you have 16 of them that's only $4.8 million
So lets say $40mil for panels, $10mil for inverters, cables, installation, etc, thats $50 mil total, or .038% of their market cap, or 3% of YouTube

I've purchased several Airlink gigE switches. All of them use Broadcom chipsets, and the chipset technically supports jumbo frames. Typically I payed $5/port for the 8port and $6/port for the 5port.
I'm running a mix of Airlink (rt8169), nFORCE4 onboard, Marvell, etc. on the NIC side. All cheap cards (the rt8169 is now $6 at frys).
I can typically push 350Mbps (all machines are running with an MTU of 1500). CPU utilization on my Athlon64 is maybe 20%. Same on my friend's computer (sempron barton 2800).
I have a SMC switch that specifically supports jumbo frames, but I have not been able to test it because whenever I use jumbo frames I cannot contact machines that are running 100megabit.
I agree with you on the cabling, I have run with 10 year old cat5 that's stapled in my crawlspace, and brand new cat6. Both will run gigabit no problem.
cat5 UTP is not shielded (the U stands for unshielded). STP is available, but generally quite expensive and usually not worth it.

As a side note, I use an external FW drive on my HP laptop running XPSP2 Pro, and I can pull >35MB/s from it. I do not have any machines with 1394b so I can't confirm that there is an issue with that, but my 1394 port is definitely not running at S100.

  25. Re:ECS at Frys on The Making of a Motherboard at ECS · · Score: 1
I've purchased several ECS boards/cpu combos from frys and never had a problem. I'm currently running an nFORCE4-A939 board with a A64 3500+ from frys and a GF6600GT from newegg, been running for about 8 months, zero problems. I have a sempron64 2800 in a cheap ECS board (from frys, forget the name, it's SIS chipset) running FC4 as a file server/CS server, again zero issues. A while back I picked up a K7S5A from newegg along with an AXP 1700+, had no problems with it until I put in a known bad CPU which fried the board. I wouldn't touch the GQ computers, but I buy GQ media (usually rebranded sony!) and maybe have 1 out of 200 fail. This is both CD and DVD media, and I burn at the highest speed I can (40x and 16x respectively). I also buy airlink network equipment (from frys), mainly gigabit switches and NIC's, and while the wireless routers are pretty bad the rest of the equipment has been solid.
Everyone says that frys is bad, but I've been shopping there for probably over 10 years, and as long as you follow the rules you can get good stuff for good prices.
    • Assume the clerks are clueless about whatever you are looking for (unless you need something from the cage or need to check the price on something don't talk to them)
    • Double check the items they pull from the cage
    • Insist on brand new equipment (nothing with the sticker that say's it has been returned, unless it's something like a cable or similar where it doesn't matter)
    • Read their ads here (san jose) and, if you can, check the PLU# at outpost.com for more info before you go to the store
This may seem like more work than it's worth, but you can frequently get stuff well below normal prices. CPU/Mobo combos are particularly cheap, while other items (especially video cards) are usually overpriced.
