I must be missing something. How does the U.N. threaten this? My understanding is that all the UN wants is to take control of DNS services (as evidenced by this/. story. AFAIK, that doesn't mean the end of the world as we know it. In fact, it may be a good thing long term from a privacy and security standpoint. IMHO, a bunch of Politicans are rallying around a non-issue so that they can look like they're doing something to protect the USA's interests.
Would that be a correct assessement or have I got it all (or partially) wrong?
....has just created a huge dis-incentive to people who want to make iPod accessories just so he can make a few extra bucks and keep his shareholders happy. I'd just love to see these companies come out and call Apple out on this. But it won't happen because of Apple's love of using lawyers to keep the "reality distortion field" in full effect.
IMHO, Jobs is as much of a crook as the two headed monster known as the MPAA/RIAA.

Seeing what a over-reacting media whore he seems to be, I suspect that this discussion will be referenced on whatever media outlet he ends up on (likely Fox News, if you want to call what they do journalism) to prove that we "nerds" are a bunch of psychos who are addicted to violent video games and our threats to "run down Jack Thompson with an 18-wheeler" as the AC who posted that comment said will be used as proof of that.
Why not tone down the rhetoric and give him the type of attention he deserves, which is NONE whatsoever?
..... Does this make AMD money? After all, the comsumer computer business tends to have VERY low margins. AFAIK, AMD doesn't have much mindshare in the moneymaking enterprise market (although to be fair they are trying to push that at the moment) So if AMD is discounting the hell out of these chips to gain mindshare, are they making money? If not, how long can they continue to do so?
Maybe. A show like Firefly or Birds Of Prey that would normally draw a very limited audience and get tossed from broadcast TV quickly. Maybe this as a distribution model may keep these shows alive longer. But I don't know if that's enough to convince the PHB's that make these decisions.
"Will it kill traditional TV ads"
Yes. But they'll just pay for product placements. Problem solved.
"Will we end up eventually paying (or stealing) all of our future programming?"
Yes if the price is right (or the shows show up quickly enough on BitTorrent).
BTW, Mark Cuban was behind Broadcast.com and I think that there's a bit of self interest behind his thoughts.

Doctor Who in case you missed it.....
"It's not clear what means Apple might employ if companies don't go along, as Apple declined to comment on that."
They'll likely do what they've always done. If someone makes an iPod accessory and doesn't pay the "tax" they'll send in the lawyers.
It makes me wonder if they got the same people who came up with the Microsoft Protection Racket to come up with this idea.

Then somebody should check the tempature of hell. It might be getting chilly down there.

Think of all of the MP3's and movies that I can download without the RIAA or the MPAA catching me. Thanks guys!
Sony won't kill the Homebrew market. After all, these were the same geniuses that came up with copy protection that was defeated by a magic marker.
