Why? Because you don't like it? Truth be told, there's a lot of idiot users out there who don't understand MDI interfaces, and Microsoft's partially solved that problem. In 2000 and XP, you had a normal MDI, and some users were too stupid to figure out the Window menu.

Third, why is Excel and Powerpoint MDI but Word SDI?

No, They all behave the same actually. Look at the window menu in Word. From any word doc you can see any other word doc that's open. That's the same as Excel - pseudo SDI. I think the change in Excel made it work more like Word, not the other way around.

Probably legacy shit they finally consolidated.

I can assure you that OOo will not fail because they cannot support you.

Easy. We had a paradigm shift in the 1970's that resulted in increased popularity of smaller Japanese cars. There's a few failures in the "total destruction" oil POV. The big difference lies in the Cost of Oil vs. The cost of alternatives. Today oil is the cheapest. If it's no longer the cheapest, we'll find other ways.

    2) The mouse without buttons - the buttons are on the bottom. Tap towards the front of the mouse and it's a left click. Tap towards the sides and it right clicks. If there was any games available for the Mac, I'm sure gamers would bitch. Seems to force users to keep a light hand when using their mouse.

Equally dumb ideas from an otherwise innovative company. Let's see if we can add a third stupid mouse innovation from Apple.

I'm not a Microsoft fanboy, but they deserve credit for bringing optical mouse technology to the masses, even if they weren't the innovators. It was truly an evolutionary step in the right direction.
