I've fantasized about the same possibilities, and it's fun to contemplate. But how likely is it to be true at this point, considering that we haven't already found supporting evidence? Sure, a few hundred thousand years is a good long time for much of it to be destroyed and ground to dust. Yet if Neanderthals or some other dead race had had much beyond than batteries made out of lemons, why haven't we found even some basic artifacts or ruins from their vehicles, factories WalMarts, and nuclear reactors? We find impressive dinosaur fossils all the time and they're millions and million of years older.

I was thinking the same thing. The story says the web-based apps will coexist with your present Windows apps. And that they'll be more architecture-independent. It sounds to me like the new Windows is really the same old Windows with a bunch of Silverlight/Flash/Java/ActiveX sort of stuff running in environments like Mozilla Prism and Google Gears. So maybe Microsoft will finally get IE8 to be standards-compliant, but it won't matter anymore because this platform will be the new customer lock-in for web stuff.

The problem I've observed lately with some sites is they're distorting the CAPTCHA text so much that it's difficult to make out the characters. Is this "5" or "S"? Is that a "I" or just part of the background? Is it a Q or is it an O with a line overlapping in a confusing spot? And so on. It takes several tries to get CAPTCHA right these days, and it's frustrating -- not because it takes intelligence per se, but because it takes trial and error to figure out what the mess on the screen is really supposed to be.

It does sound odd at first, but it makes sense. Consider that your talk time is metered and you are billed extra if you use too much -- but data is supposedly unlimited. AIM voice chat, or Skype, would minimize the number of paid minutes you have to use. Not that AT&T would like it, but there's good reason to want it as a bill-paying customer.
