also, in the case of servers running SSH, ftp, etc..you can't really lock out every user just because one hit the bad password limit. say that limit is 5 bad passwords; the attacker would only need 4 IPs to guess the correct password.
i suppose if you're not going to tell ANYONE your email address, you could even get rid of type A; just block incoming mail!
oh wait. has the spam defeated the usefulness of email, or have you?
uh...you chose gentoo as your distro, and now you're complaining about having to compile things? maybe you're a fedora user at heart...they have up-to-date RPMs of the nvidia drivers available.
Uh, no..you got it backwards. Here is the correct quote:
Vermont Review: First off: Does your name rhyme with "vogue" or is like a Cow's "moo" plus a "G" at the end?
Dr. Robert Moog: It rhymes with vogue. That is the usual German pronunciation. My father's grandfather came from Marburg, Germany. I like the way that pronunciation sounds better than the way the cow's 'moo-g' sounds.
uhh, so recompile the older driver for your new kernel. and installing java is pretty fucking simple as well. nobody minds helping you when you're stuck, but don't blame the "stupid computer".
put together a bunch of rar files?
*blinks*
all you have to do is unrar the main file and the rest take care of themselves. its just split for convenience.
we could make a thunderbird/evolution/etc plugin that automatically wgets all the links in a message flagged as junk a few times. if enough people decide the email is unwanted, the problem takes care of itself. this is a bit of an added safeguard because its sort of a vote rather than one person or company deciding what is spam and what is not.
Nice thought, but it won't do much to stop a script that uses a new proxy every x attempts from a large list. You could block public proxies, but the bigger botnet owners might still have a fair shot over a several day long attack.
Most of the posts I see so far are offtopic, insulting, and unhelpful. The guy asked for a tech solution, we're tech people! Help him out.
I had a laptop stolen from my dorm a couple years ago, it sucked. I say just write a nice little program that hides itself and gives you a remote shell. Then have it 'phone home' just by updating its IP with a free dynamic dns service. When you need to get into the box, just ssh to the hostname. Call up the school and tell them the IP/MAC, and they will be able to help you if it is on the campus network. Avoid 'locking down' the box, as this will just encourage the theif to format the drive before you have a chance to find it (which he may do anyway). Perhaps other/.ers can elaborate. Good luck!
Interesting. I'm 17 (dropped out, goin for ged then a 2-year school) and am in a similar situation. I'm a good coder and know pretty much all the web technologies in and out, and have been trying to build a business taking outsourced jobs from sites like scriptlance and also developing a few good ideas that i know are in demand. I want to know what advice people have for me too, as i'd really not like to go back to being the dishbitch.
I often find myself in the mood to tackle some problem (apart from work), but there are times when I just don't know what people need! It would be great if there were some sort of website where people could make requests to the open-source community. In the mean time, does anyone have any suggestions for participants in the Summer of Code?

It seems to me no revolution is going to start because everyone is asleep and waiting for it.
my point was the people in this thread are taking it a bit to far - they aren't giving their email to family members, or their banks

what makes you so sure you have this "mind" or "free will" that no other animal has?

and here i was thinking telephones were electronic... :-/
guess i'm old fashioned.
perhaps one that is less evil?
