...Because when I'm lost in the backwoods of the third world and 911 doesn't seem to work, my next move is always to check slashdot for a relevant article.
Untalented "artists" try to compensate for lack of talent with sensational special effects, gore, sex, etc.
Requiem For A Dream had plenty of all three, yet I'm fully convinced it was the artistic work of a team of talented artist, and fast-forwarding through the special effects, gore, sex, etc would remove the powerful message that the film's creators had intended it to convey to you.
But now we have to watch out for terrorists...privacy laws were just too much hassle. Besides, who needs privacy unless you're doing something illegal in the first place...right guys?
Umm...the time between when kids leave school and enter the workforce...that's what, a couple weeks? actually in most cases it's not even a positive number.
Bah. Lynx. This "Hyperlinking" and "SSL" crapola. Bah. Wget and vi is all that has ever been needed.
In my family, we took turns parsing web pages by hand, and look what hard-working people we are now!
Uhh, but it doesn't take anything NEAR one second to delete most email spam!
I can't even remember the last time I saw spam in my inbox. I don't know the numbers, but I'd say at least divide that number in half, because it definitely doesn't take a spam filter one man-second to erase each message.
*insert counter-argument involving anti-spam companies helping the economy*
I've seen a couple of old boxes with turbo buttons come into work (back when i had a job, it was at a pc repair shop)..and i remember wondering wtf do those do; can someone here enlighten me?
me and my friend modified a ps2 controller to shock you when you were damaged (instead of the force feedback). i think he liked it more than i did, but neither of us will go near it anymore =p
When XP came out I pirated it, and pirated all the software i needed for it. About a year after, I realized that my two options were:
1) Spend hours collecting virii on shady websites or downloading from slow unreliable p2p users to get 90% working cracked software
or
2) Find what I need quickly on freshmeat, or something similar to what i need, download and modify it with the promise of free support from the author.
However, all the best OSS is for the *nix platform. For me, the choice was obvious.
Been completely open-source for over a year now, contributing wherever I can.
Want to know how to market linux to XP pirates? Stop fucking porting your software to XP.
Just because nobody's written one for *nix yet doesn't mean nobody can. How about a virus/trojan called 'configure', or with a launching component called configure. Upload it to the right places (sourceforge CVS?) and give it the right description and hordes of admins will download it, su to root, run it and go out to lunch. On saturdays some friends come over and we play hacker wargames, and I plan to use this method this weekend.
Keeping your grandmother up to date with the latest packages isn't really that hard, just set up a cron job to run 'yum -y upgrade'/reboot (or your distro equivilant) once or twice a week and she'll be reasonably up to date.
Yeah that's a real fucking bright idea...keep everyone nice and ignorant about the reality of corrupt politics while they're growing up so you can ensure it never gets any better in the next generation.
The reason these questions are so frustrating is that while nearly everybody would IRL flip the switch again before replacing the light bulb, it just seems like such a mindless, simple thing that it doesn't often get mentioned in a fictitious troubleshooting scenario; it is assumed that flipping the switch has already been verified as not the answer to the problem.
how can you be sure this email wasn't a phishing attempt?
how can you be sure the response wasn't an improvised second part of the phishing attempt as well? i find it very unlikely that this kind of email would actually be legitimate.
Actually, 1984 came (and went) more than twenty years ago. Parent may want to review this article for a quick update on where things stand.
only on slashdot will comments calling mods blind and stupid be modded up +5.
I submit that they are both.

actually i was merely poking fun at the guys misspelling of bigotry, but thanks for the link.
Sorry, what did you say is the definition of bigoty?
