"Which makes it very straightforward to work with. You don't find yourself wondering how something will work. If you have any background in 3D graphics theory, things work in OpenGL exactly as you'd expect."
Except that you have to apply matrix transformations in exactly the opposite order as you would if computing by hand;)
I hope this law takes effect in the UK with all their government sponsored CCTV's. Imagine cops arresting themselves! It would be like watching a bad coding bug in a video game. I'll be sure to grab some popcorn as I watch the chaos that ensues!
Every true FF fan has waited for this.
Its the best since 6. 12 is a multiple of 6. Coincidence? I think not.
I wondered how the game would fare without Sakaguchi. Strong as ever.
I've got a CS degree. When I began taking graduate courses for 3D graphics, I was quite upset that numerical analysis wasn't pushed onto me in undergrad. It would have been nice to not have to learn monte-carlo integration alongisde ray tracing. That way I could have given enough time to both to fully understand. Instead I felt rushed through both topics:\
To contribute to the topic, here is what I took:
Calculus 1-3 (3 was most important for me since it was about 3D analytical geometry)
Differential Equations
Discrete I (combinatorics), Discrete II (Finite Automata & Language Theory)
What I wish I had taken:
Linear algebra (matrix stuff)
Numerical Analysis
SOMETHING THAT TAUGHT QUATERNIONS!!!!
"Display system having floating point rasterization and floating point framebuffering", which was filed in 1998 and granted in 2003, in its Radeon graphics cards.
This is insane. Look at this snippet from the OpenGL extension ARB_texture_float:
SGI owns US Patent #6,650,327, issued November 18, 2003. SGI
believes this patent contains necessary IP for graphics systems
implementing floating point (FP) rasterization and FP framebuffer
capabilities.
SGI will not grant the ARB royalty-free use of this IP for use in
OpenGL, but will discuss licensing on RAND terms, on an individual
basis with companies wishing to use this IP in the context of
conformant OpenGL implementations. SGI does not plan to make any
special exemption for open source implementations.
Contact Doug Crisman at SGI Legal for the complete IP disclosure.
Did the ARB cough up money to SGI to be able to use floating point textures? What about DirectX's use of floating point textures?
I know for a fact that Nvidia supports "full 128-bit (4 component) floating point precision throughout the entire pipeline". Why isn't nvidia getting slapped with a lawsuit as well?
Also, a lot of graphics techniques were invented almost 30 years ago (such as bump mapping). Surely there has to be SOME prior art out there..... no one needed floating point textures/framebuffers until SGI invented/patented it?
Why doesn't SGI have a patent on integer-based textures/framebuffers? Probably because its rediculous to patent the use of a specific numerical type. Its like saying SGI invented floating point numbers. Rediculous.
How can we get around this stupid patent? Someone needs to invent a double-precision version of the floating point texture, and tell SGI to get lost.
I am not buying a PS3 until I can get it used, and all the games I want used. For the first time in my life, I want the retailer getting the profits, not the manufacturer. Can anyone with a business mind tell me if this is a good plan to enjoy the franchise games I've played for years, but without contributing to Sony's evil tactics?
Given Sony's behavior regarding the PSP and using homebrew on it, I am highly skeptical of this PS3 linux project. How can we be sure that Sony will not resort to forcing firmware upgrades on new games? Some of the latest firmware upgrades for PSP do absolutely nothing but thrwat homebrew attempts. Sony has suddenly done a 180 on homebrew? And for its flagship product?
Lest we not forget how crippled the PS2 linux project was (the $700 one)....
Point taken. I'd like to get into a discussion about total power consumption of all data centers compared to all consumer graphics cards, but meh, its late:p
I for one am scared as shit to learn that a mere computer glitch could have set off the end of the world. At what point is the human element removed from the equation? If we left it to the machines, there might be no humans right now.
As a programmer, I tip my hat to this gentleman for knowing a bug when he sees one. Perhaps a story like this will make realize just how dangerous the nukes are, and how even more dangerous it is to rely on computers to handle them. Skynet anyone?
With all due respect, who cares about power consumption? Have you seen the rumored specs of the latest video cards? Don't innovate, just brute force the problem. A rather sad state of affairs. Give me twice the performance with half the transistors and I am SOLD.
/rant (karma burning in effect)
Seriously though, props to Google for sayin what many have probably already said. Its just that Google isn't Joe Sixpack. Maybe people will listen to them.

No, its already possible to run a dedicated steam server in linux.
I've done it.
NWA called it like it is: "Fuck tha police"
"The news is sure to irk Microsoft who may now face an increased delay in some consumers adopting Vista at this early stage."
Anyone whose motives to upgrade to Vista for either of these two games is a moron who should be flogged into oblivion.

Schwing!
Instead of making enemies smarter with better AI, lets make players dumber.
Should even things out quite nicely IMHO.
Netburst.

All the more reason to scrap the shuttle project and come up with a more efficient way to put people in space. NASA has a date/time bug? Come on!!!
What does porn have to do with anything? Are you saying testosterone gets lowered from watching porn, or from masturbating?
What is the difference (in terms of semen content) between having sex and jacking off?
If a man has sex with his girlfriend multiple times a day, does he also lose testosterone?
I don't see the point you are trying to make.....
It was tongue in cheek.
Senators above the law, researchers aren't?
I'm in the wrong business....
How is a funny commercial modded interesting? ITS FAKE, THERE ISN'T A 15-BLADE RAZOR, WATCH THE VIDEO.

In between bouts of decrying "Sooo Wone-wy", Kim was quoted as saying that news of the faked nuke test was "Inebbidable!"

Someone call the cops! That's illegal!
