Because we can't get any operatives inside the DPRK. The people that are starving don't get anywhere close to the leaders. The people that protect the leaders are well fed and cared for.

Besides, there is the patriotism factor. We (USA) re-elected Geo. Bush even though most people thought he was an idiot. But he was our idiot. And during a time of war, its better to close ranks and stand behind the fearless leader. That's why crappy leaders like war (here and in NK).

Because China knows they have Microsoft by the ball$. All they have to do is threaten to move a small part of their operations over to Linux and maybe close Microsoft's Beijing R&D office and Microsoft will give them the keys to the kingdom.

I'm guessing that what China really wants is the ability to put back doors and kill switches into communications platforms used there. Microsoft (and other businesses, like RIM) will do that For A Few Dollars More.

Perhaps someone can come up with some seismic sensing technology that can detect underground voids. Similar to what the oil and gas people use, but optimized for shallower depths.

Communities could do a periodic survey in populated areas and give property owners some advanced notice to evacuate their property. The down side is that existing property owners won't want a pre-sale seismic survey to become common practice.
