What could be more subtle and insidious than a small chip, painlessly inserted? Lets think of the "advantages" of this coupled with a cashless society (screws on tinfoil hat):
1. No more illegal drug trade. Hard to sell drugs if you can't get paid.
2. Ditto for prostitution.
3. No more counterfeiting.
4. No more theft. Remember that IBM commercial a while back with a dude looking like he stole some steaks? The guard comes running out of the store after him and says" sir, you forgot your receipt! "Implying that the implanted chip and merchandise was scanned and debited from his account on the way out.
5. No more black market. Barter is all that would be left.
6. No more income tax evasion.
7. Gov't could track every single person. Hard to commit any crime when they know where and when you are.
This is how they are going to sell this idea. There not gonna come out and say it's the mark of the beast, they're gonna do it as sneaky as possible for "the good of humanity". Only the right wing "nut job" Christians are gonna be freaking out. That's when they take us and cut off our heads./tinfoil hat.
P.S. The original Greek translation actually says IN the forehead or right hand. The translators couldn't wrap their heads around that one.
Unfortunatly (sp?) Most home users are totally clueless and actually proud of their incompetence. That's the mind-boggling part imho. Why would someone be proud of being ignorant? We never hear this about their cars.. Oh the engine needs oil, well, I don't know anything about cars, I just drive em till they drop.
There was a great sig here (slashdot) a while back about gates lowering the collective i.q. of computer users . Wish I remembered it.
I agree that desktop choice is good. I think though that if you want a mass exodus to linux, the thing has to be consistent. You need to have a similar directory structure and tools so things WORK. IMHO the main reason Linux is at 2% or so is not the usabilty or the graphics. It's the frustration of having incompatible software. The worst offender that I know of is Xandros. Great distro. Works like windows (which by the way is what everyone to be converted uses ouside of/.) Try to install something from the deb archives. Breaks the whole system. That's as bad as Microsoft locking people into software. You can't even install Kpackage on the latest version because it screws everything up. This has to stop if there's any hope of moving linux to a mainstream desktop. Having a distro locking people in to their specific software archive is not gonna help the cause.
I've just recently seen the new gnome and it looks and acts (or can be modified to) look like windows. This is a good thing for the "unwashed masses". The geeks can alway hack it up however they like, but if you want a mojority of people to use it, it must be consistent and windows user freindly./rant
The main problem with Microsoft is that they have also locked in the file formats. It's absurd that a closed, proprietary format should become the defacto standard. They use this to force upgrades that people don't need and keep the competition out of the marketplace. Yes Adobe has pdf, but many programs can also make pdf files. The.doc and.xls should have been made open in the DOJ trials. They did nothing, and nothing will change until the viruses and spyware hit critical mass... then maybe people will try alternatives.
"Think of the Internet as a Highway."
There it is again. Some clueless fool talking about the "Information Superhighway." They don't know didley about the net. It's nothing like a superhighway. That's a rotten metaphor. Suppose the metaphor ran in the other direction. Suppose the highways were like the net. . . A highway hundreds of lanes wide. Most with pitfalls for potholes. Privately operated bridges and overpasses. No highway patrol. A couple of rent-a-cops on bicycles with broken whistles. 500 member vigilante posses with nuclear weapons. A minimum of 237 on ramps at every intersection. No signs. Wanna get to Ensenada? Holler out the window at a passing truck to ask directions. Ad hoc traffic laws. Some lanes would vote to make use by a single-occupant- vehicle a capital offense on Monday through Friday between 7:00 and 9:00. Other lanes would just shoot you without a trial for talking on a car phone. AOL would be a giant diesel-smoking bus with hundreds of ebola victims on board throwing dead wombats and rotten cabbage at the other cars, most of which have been assembled at home from kits. Some are built around 2.5 horsepower lawnmower engines with a top speed of nine miles an hour. Others burn nitrogylcerin and idle at 120. No license plates. World War II bomber nose art instead. Terrifying paintings of huge teeth or vampire eagles. Bumper mounted machine guns. Flip somebody the bird on this highway and get a white phosphorus grenade up your tailpipe. Flatbed trucks cruise around with anti-aircraft missile batteries to shoot down the traffic helicopter. Little kids on tricycles with squirtguns filled with hydrochloric acid switch lanes without warning. NO OFFRAMPS. None. Now that's the way to run an Interstate Highway system.
"the reasons for choosing to have them in the first place are almost always centered around the parent rather than the child."
Agreed.
It is totally YOUR business to have kids or not. I was replying to the parent who sounded very disturbed at the thought of raising kids. I feel for him and his spouse. (That's where the selfishness came in.) If he "got her pregnant", IMHO, be a man and step up. Be the best husband you can be and support your wife. Once he see's his child his views may very well change. It's one of those things that's impossible to decribe without actually doing it. To hear a baby call you daddy or come over and give you a hug can be pretty special.
It is a big committment to raise kids and not all people want to or are up to it. I repect that and people shouldn't be giving you a hard time. God knows there are enough unwanted kids out there as it is.
It's often sad to see how many people "think they know best" and try and meddle in other peoples lives. You have your life, I have mine, and we are free to do whatever we want with it. It's really nobody else's business.. (though I do understand an eager grand-parent to be);-)
Have kids, I mean. They are expensive piss and shit factories. Once you have one, you're trapped.
Getting my wife pregnant is the WORST mistake I ever made.
I pity you. Children are an incredible joy, but they aren't for the selfish. You need to give a lot of yourself to your family but the rewards are awesome!
...Until the security holes, viruses, trojans and spyware finally frustrate the users to try something else.
I've tried lots of distros, but the thing the linux people seem to hate, is the same thing the windows users want... something that looks and works the same as windows without all the above mentioned problems.
I find it insulting in Canada, with our Doctor shortage and all, that they still dictate how much a doctor can make. Imagine if they tried that crap on any other industry? Oh, your a computer geek, you can only make 52k a year. HA! No wonder we can't get doctors.. If they're gonna tell you how much you can make, then they should pay to train you IMNSHO! This issue is so screwed up here..
We have lazy hospital staff that sit around bs'n while many people wait 4 to 8 hours in an emergency room, only to be diagnosed and released in 10 minutes. It kills me because the people get pissed about the wait, complain to the gov't, and the gov't throws MORE money at the problem instead of making the doctors and nurses acountable for their time. We've seen doctors spending most of their time filling out papers.. bloody ridiculous. Only in canada eh? we sure don't have it solved up here so don't believe any of the propaganda of our "superior system"./rant
I have 2 2400+ Tbred cpus in two different machines on Asus A7V8-X-X boards. When I use 3com net cards and Creative sound, they are very fast. (onboard sound always sucks IMHO) I still run win98 (I'm cheap and like the speed) and Photoshop 6 will load in 6 seconds from a clean boot. I also only have 256 meg ddr 333 ram.
These are fast machines though I haven't tried Doom 3 on them, they run anything else just fine.
FWIW I did find a decent speed increase moving up from the 2000+.
hahaha I have an IBM PC 704.
My shop isn't THAT big!

From my cold dead hands...;-)
I'm not playing that Longhorn game. I'm still running 98 on an amd 2400+. Very quick. I have tons of software that works fine for what I do, I have tons of older games I haven't even played yet. I have lots of customers that have old p1's that work fine for their dial-up and email. They don't want or need or can even afford to upgrade. It's a very low priority now with most users as I'm sure most techies can testify to now-a-days. There is nothing like the when the internet was new coming anytime soon that demands that people upgrade. Heck 28% of the web is still using win98. No need = no sales. Wholesalers are going out of business here for lack of sales.
I (puts on tinfoil hat) hate to think of what Longhorn is really gonna look like when it comes out. All this talk of dumping the bios, privacy concerns etc.. Remember when Microsoft floated the trial baloon about yearly licensing when xp was coming out? Bet that rears it's ugly head soon. Longhorn cd's will be like AOL cd's. They'll be free and everywhere. The catch? Gonna cost you $100 a year to run your computer, then billy can shut you off remote if you don't pay. Not gonna be nice in computer land in a few years. Glad we still have Linux!/tinfoil hat
I have an IBM PC 704 server with quad cpu's, 12 9 gig drives and 500 megs of ram. Runs 24/7 with sme server on it.
It came with 9 drives, I added three and haven't done anything else except fill up the hard drives.
This old stuff can work fine for a long time depending on what you need it for.
I just found this thing a few days ago. I have it on the exactly wrong hardware you want. I have an IBM PC704 quad p-pro server with 12 - 9 gig drive in a raid array. Very loud and big, but the software I run on it is great.
This server software is the coolest thing I've ever seen. All configured via web browser, does mail, ftp, webserver.. acts as a router and windows domain controller. Awesome product. Worked right out of the box (burnt cd), configured my dsl first shot, and samba works without tinkering.
I think you can get it:here
1. No more illegal drug trade. Hard to sell drugs if you can't get paid.
2. Ditto for prostitution.

This is awesome.. wonder what it really would cost to build?
I of course would have some modifications.. the gym would be out and a band room would be in ;-). Very cool house.

I'm making the cd as simple as I can and so easy my Mom could use it. Hopefully I can make some money teaching instead of all these formats.
