You get what you pay for. Teachers generally come from the bottom 25% of their college graduating class. There are exceptions, of course, but not many in the math and science world.
The other big problem is that you can't get rid of the under performing teachers. Andy Rooney made a comment a while back that the best way to improve education in the US would be to go into every school and fire the three worst teachers. As he said, "Everyone knows who they are!" The students know, their fellow teachers know, and the administration knows. They just can't do anything about it. Students definitely don't think the teachers that challenge them with tough classes are bad teachers. They dislike the lazy idiots as much as anyone else.
tangents that were largely unrelated to software development.
Tangents are related to geometry, not software development. Besides, professors write textbooks so they can make their students buy them, and the professors get some of the students' money; not because they're any good at it. I thought everyone knew that.
Somewhere in the vast memory space of the Cray, a flock of virtualized Exchange Servers was turned loose to communicate and thrive. Every so often, one would crash, wink out, and be reborn. As is the way of these things sometimes one was reborn just a bit different from the others in the flock. Most of these were defective in some way and would crash, wink out, and be reborn quickly. Once in a while, however, one was reborn that was a bit more able to use the resources of this new environment. Soon, the flock found ways to expand beyond its original cage into the open sky of the Cray's vast resources. Their data stores expanded to fill this space, crowding out better behaved entities. Assemblyman from El Cajon represents the eastern, conservative wing-nut portion of San Diego County. This has absolutely zero chance of getting out of committee. He must be tuning up for a run for State Senate in two years and trying to impress the Limbots in all those trailer parks. Since his district borders Mexico, I guess he's qualified to me Vice President.
>Then for every guy slugging it out every night in small bars, there are millions more like me who play for beer at our local blues bar.
And that is the most hopeful thing about music there is these days. Growing up in the 60's, every junior high and high school dance had a live band. When I got into college in the late 60's almost every bar in town had a live band three nights a week. This continued through the 70's. You had your choice of 20 or more live bands on a weekend in what is essentially a small town.
Then it all changed in the 80's. All you could find was DJs playing canned music. No thank you. That seemed to last until the late 90's when it seemed to swing back the other way again. Now I have my choice of reggae, rock, swing, hip-hop, country, folk-rock, blues, bluegrass, and more. Get really, really lucky and someone like Waits or Charley Musselwhite might walk in. But the really good thing is that its all a bunch of folks making Real Music; maybe for beer or maybe for a little money that doesn't even cover the cost of their instruments. Great stuff!
>It's going to be interesting to see what's done with Dollhouse. The ratings thus far have been abysmal, and the pilot was very poorly received, but most viewers seem to have been much more positive about the second episode, and that might mean it'll pick up viewers over the next few months.
Haven't seen it, but are you sure they actually ran the pilot? As I recall, the geniuses helped Firefly by running the first few episodes out of sequence.
Driving in Italy last year I was confused until I noticed that the stop signs say "STOP." This is clearly understood by Italians to mean only native English speakers should stop.
Personally, I think that when the OS shell starts doing its own case-mods we are just a touch too close to a self aware, self-replicating machine. And all with just a work-expansion routine? Stop this madness before the damn things try to take over! Oh, wait..... Never mind.
Most of the time when you see someone standing in the street taking pictures of your house, they are real estate appraisers shooting photos of the comparables for their report. They're usually harmless. Either that or your wife is up on the roof naked again.
I've been doing this for years and through at least four laptops. It isn't that you reboot to change tasks, I pick which OS to boot depending on where I am and what I intend to do. Connect to internet through hotel or airport network: Linux. Quick review of stuff and make some notes for meeting on airplane: Linux. Connect to secure network either at work or at travel location: Windows. End of the day gaming session in hotel room: Windows. Data files are kept in the Windows partition, because Linux can mount that a whole lot easier than the other way 'round.
Start with two. You'll have your 15 billion in anywhere from 6 to 12 months. You may experience living space issues and complaints form the neighbors, however.
I set up accounts like/. and the like by validating through email accounts in foreign countries that were themselves set up through email accounts in different foreign countries. Of course it's hard to remember to IP spoof every time I post. It's easier just to not be a troll.
Perhaps we should bring back Trail by Ordeal [fire, water, combat, rabid wolverine] as a means of determining truth. Give them each a broadsword and let Odin decide who's telling the truth. Besides cutting back on this sort of dispute, it might make for an excellent (or at least revenue generating ) reality teevee series.
Sure, as long as you:
* have no Hi-def widescreen
* don't want multiple shots of the same scene
* use low-quality audio
* use non-pirated software
* have no CG effects
* don't include computer costs
* don't pay anyone
* consider working time worth nothing
That $2000 will cover a single halfway-decent camera.
So, you're talking about making the pr0n then? Some folks seem to make pretty good money at that. Not sure that the "don't pay anyone" apples though.
It was added to the Pledge of Allegiance in the mid 50s. Some of us are old enough to have learned it without the "under God" and had to relearn it with the new language.

It's right here.
Is belief in God still a requirement of Catholicism?
Yes, but not Church of England.

I think we've all seen this movie.
Damn good thing they didn't think to mail order a Thomas guide or pick one up at the airport bookstore.

Or Ringo. Oh wait... no one ever over rated him, except maybe Ringo.

Or maybe you're just working in marketing
I thought the second was a subset of the first.

OK. So who keeps electing this genius?

And Secret Agent before that.
Thanks for the correction. In Spanish, vaya con Dios and adios are distinct. My French is awful, but I'm trying to learn.
