So let me get this straight. People bitch and moan about Vista because there will be nothing new and they bitch and moan about Office 2007 because too much is new. Microsoft is damned if they do and damned if they don't.
How is this a 5?! If you work in the IT dept, you know that the end user is a frickin n00b, and whenever the feces hits the fan, it hits the IT team. The IT gets blamed for this or any other stupid thing they try to install.
I can say this freely, because end users don't read/.:):):)
Maybe you don't care about your 300GB of pr0n or warez, but the data I store is more important to me than to put them on a HD. You don't have to buy the latest AIT or DLT, (which naturally are super expensive), but if you are serious about long term backups, then a HD is not the solution. You will never convince me otherwise.
A backup to me, should have the ability to be archived, placed in a safe for a while. Though you can do these with HD's, I just wouldn't trust them to stay good in storage as long as a tape would.
Be honest, where would you rather store data for you own backup, a hard drive (external of internal, your choice), A Thumb Drive, a tape backup, or a CD/DVD (your choice, or choose a new variant if you like).
Most will choose the options in that order, baring space constraints.
A hard drive is mechanical in nature and would *never* be on the top of my list for backups. I imagine most people, (who actually even bother to backup in the first place), would choose to do the backups using tapes or CD/DVD, not thumb drives or hard drives. (Do you mean USB flash device when you say thumb drive?).
I am always forgetting this day, so please just email me or call me thx.
I don't use a calendaring app, and I just keep losing my PDA, or the PDA runs out of power and I just don't do b/u's.:)
There's nothing to stop you from saying anything. You can lie, you can slander, you say whatever you want. It is your choice, and you are free to do so.
Free from repurcussions, is a totally different issue. If I punched someone in the face, they are either going to punch me back or let me continue to punch them.
Well, I found a new placard at my local cineplex, that was so wrong I laughed.
It said something to the effect:"Come to the movies and you won't see ads". (Of course in reference to TV commercials).
I think while I waited for the movie to start, I actually saw *more* commercials than I would have in 1.5-2 hours of watching TV.
Tivo telling me that more ads are not intrusive is simply not enough. If they piss me off, I will cancel my service.
Then, I will just buy a dvd recorder and program it myself.
(I will prolly start playing with mythtv also just to cover my bets).

Actually, what I took from the parent post, was how they optimized software knowing that the hardware wasn't going to change.
What I instantly pictured was my atari 2600, and how the longer it was on the market, the better the games got. The hardware didn't really change, but the software developers took what little they had and did great. Now, I don't think we're at that point yet where we can start doing that, but eventually, the layers upon layers of API's demanding better hardware so that it's easier for a developer to create a widget with only 2 lines of code....yeah maybe we have a little wiggle room there.
Ummm, say what you will, but windows is *the* computer gaming platform. For the last time: just walk into *any* store that sells software and compare the games aisles between the 2.
"I like to play games" *is* a vaild concern when buying a computer, especially if that is something you value.
I personally use a Mac for my workstation, and a PC for my games. (I use Linux for servers).
I don't understand how the parent got a +5 insightful for an obvious flame bait.
I've heard of Tempest emanations/ Van Ecks for eavesdropping. Supposedly the technique can grab keystrokes from remote machies.
Just google for "tempest eavesdropping" if you want info on this.
You're new around here, aren't you?
people use sendmail on windows?

I wish there was a "Who Cares" mod. I would use that one here. :)
Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity.

Does it prefer HD-DVD or Blu-ray?
Too bad MS already holds the patent to this.

As if any of my current machines will be around in 33 years, let alone 3-5. (If they are, they won't be in my house).
*.slahdot.org works. it's just re-directing.
I don't think they make alarms/ignition kills without some kind of manual switch/bypass.
