  1. Re:Good work Novell on YaST to Become Open Source · · Score: 2, Insightful

That'd be real good, but I doubt we'll ever see it. The whole world is about money and ignorance. Showing off their source code to the world is like taking a punch in the face in front of your girlfriend to some.

I guess a lot of companies just like to sit around and brag about how good their software helps Earth; they don't really want anyone to know how it actually is because someone else's might be better. It's a huge pride issue.

    Arrogancy owns the world.

  2. Re:Don't run Quake IV on WINDOWS on QuakeCon 2004 or Bust - Including Quake IV? · · Score: 1

Sure, Windows is unstable, with a shitload of holes and vulnerabilities, but what better OS to run it on? Windows actually has all of the driver updates/patches that we need and it's fairly easy to access them. I will probably end up running it on Linux though, but for the rest of the world, I don't see a problem using Windows for gaming.

Just dual-boot. Slackware and Windows XP. :)

  3. The Sims on Can Games Address Serious Social Issues? · · Score: 1

Look at The Sims. It's a dating simulator, basically. The better you are at it (without using cheats), the better you'll soon realize that you actually have charm. Unlike real life at times, you can't "buy" women on The Sims -- you actually have to go after them with love and affection.

As far as movies and music being more social than video games... that just depends on the audience. I personally would pick video games over the two -- simply because you're in total control. With books, movies, and music, everything is defined. You don't have any control over anything else. With video games, you have total control to do whatever you want to, inside the games limits of course.

  4. Price difference? on MSFTs "iPod Killer" Readied for Europe · · Score: 1

"A spokesman said 'We think this is going to be one of the hot devices for Christmas 2004,' The players are expected to sell for between about $700 to $800."

And that's honestly going to sell? Bullshit. With that price, you can buy an entire computer -- possibly a laptop. Why spend that much on something 1/100 of a full computer? Because it plays music and fits in your pocket? Psh. The reason the iPod is doing so great is because of the awesome price, and of course, the software -- iTunes.

Microsoft may be just trying to jump into yet another race... but if they keep stupid ideas like that up, they will get burned. It probably won't hurt them at all, but it sure as hell won't benefit them either.

Of course not. People always find ways around and through it, even if, technically, they are wrong.

Somewhere down the line, Open-Source businesses will grow.. and they are going to need funding. I'm sure distributing their software in bundles and advertising won't really make enough money in the long run. Even if they still launched an IPO... there is still that money shortage.

After all, the two necessities of life = time and money. What happens when you put more time into something and don't receive enough back (money)? People start to complain...

  9. Re:Where's the games at? on Expert Opinions On Linux Gaming's Future · · Score: 1

Where's the games at? It's called Transgaming's WineX. Through it, I can play Stream (Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress Classic, etc). Also, the Unreal Tournament 2004 demo was released for Linux... I think that alone is a great accomplishment to the gaming standards of Linux.

As far as gaming on Linux is concerned; I say keep it going with WineX. Instead of having to spend a lot of time creating a Linux distribution just to run games, we should just expand WineX. After all, through that, we can run games on any Linux OS. What happens to the hardcore hacker/programmer that uses Slackware and wants a little frag action every now and then? WineX.

As far as gaming consoles go though, I think a distro just for the console itself would be a great idea. After all, Linux was ported to the XBOX and GameCube and ran great. Even though we don't see as much "crashing" console-wise as we do on the PC, I just think it'll be a lot better idea in the long run.

  11. Quick Reflexes, thanks to Quake! on Do Videogame Skills Transfer To Real Life? · · Score: 1

The short and long answer: Yes.

Ever since the release of Quake 3, I have been playing like a hobo on a ham sandwich. I love the game, and for what it's worth, I love blowing people into tiny fucking pieces. Coming with this though, is quick reflexes.

Oh sure. "Just because you can kill people faster than they can kill you doesn't mean you have quick reflexes," as some people would say, but indeed it does. Because of this game, I'm excellent at Paintball, Fencing, and just common reflexes in general. Even my doctor told me that I had outstanding reflexes -- he asked me what kind of activities I've been participating in. Not just Quake, but all FPSs in general.

Online games do build teamwork skills though. RPGs build better vocabulary; RTSs build patience and expands the mind laterally; and video games in general just expands the mind, taking it places that you'd never get to go while reading novels or watching movies.

    I don't know what'd I do without video games.

  12. Maybe... maybe not. on Is the Key to Linux a Games-Based Distro? · · Score: 1

For video game consoles, yes. I feel that designing a gaming-based Linux distro would be a great idea.

For personal computers though, I think something along the lines of Transgaming's WineX program would suffice, as long as it could run everything. That way, if someone wanted to do more with their operating system than just hack and program, they could install WineX and play all of the games they wanted. It just depends on the user though. Given enough time and resources, I think having WineX and a Gaming Distro would be great, because I know a lot of hardcore gamers who hate Windows... and are only keeping it to play games on.

Nonetheless, Linux is rising. Windows is falling. Anything and everything that helps the open-source community is great in my book. I've never really disliked HP, but I've never really liked them as much as I do now either. =)
