  1. Re:deposit on National Park Service Says Tech Is Enabling Stupidity · · Score: 1

A great documentary on PBS called 'KEN BURNS'S “THE NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA'S BEST IDEA"', detailing the early days of the park and those who tried to move in to privatize and setup monopoly's in there. Thankfully they stepped in before a thousand hotels could be built and started getting some common sense.
    http://www.pbs.org/nationalparks/watch-video/#642
    http://www.pbs.org/nationalparks/about/

Lincoln, John Muir and a collection of others wanted this to be a special place for Americans that no matter how poor or rich you were you could experience it, well as long as you reserve a place 8 months in advance( i know it sucks).
As an American I kind of felt like in the last 10 years we have been getting the shaft in priority to get access to these parks, no offense to the foreign travelers but they have been making the waiting period and getting access to it much harder. The problem in the last 2 years is you will have these Chinese tourist companies who have a thousand workers standing by as the date comes up to put in reservations for the National Parks, so opening day when the phone lines and internet reservations opened they flooded them. The greatest people of them all are the Germans and Dutch, those people know how to travel and not be a nuisance.

That's the least of my worries though as the parks are being overrun by giant RV's and generators galore, that was the one thing that pissed me off waking up in the morning to a generator although they are only allowed to run it for like 30 mins at most(yeah right...).

End of my rant but word is they are going to setup a 2 week grace period for American citizens and they eventually want to make the parks a 'no-car-zone' and bus people in on a tram.
You also have to get reservations on Fri, Sat, Sun for a lot of the trails that become overrun, but it never ceases to amaze me to see some woman 'HIKING WITH HIGH HEELS' to the top of Half Dome with little to no water. BRING EXTRA WATER!!!!

Some of the ones that got me were when the woman was taking a picture of her boyfriend by the Nevada Falls and he slipped on the rocks falling into the river, the girlfriend not knowing any better jumps in to try to get him and they both end up going over the Nevada Falls (600ft to the bottom).

OruxMaps rules them all as it is free and works great for outdoor, in fact thats what it was built for. Very easy to use and you can download maps online defining the area grid you want, you can download Aviation maps, Google terrain/maps/sat, MS Maps, trails/hiking maps, many other types also.
I used it for my 3 day hike Tuluome Meados to Yosemite Valley over the summer.

You may want to buy a standalone because of battery life alone, not to mention better GPS signal but phone is not that awful unless you in mountain range/dense trees. I only lost reception when I was right next to the granite rock with my weak G1.

But if you do decide to save money with the old Android phone than buy him 'EXTRA BATTERIES' off ebay/amazon. I bought one of the real big ones 2850 mAh and about 3 extra ones all for about $25. Not the greatest quality but with GPS and hopefully brightness turned down to the lowest tolerable level for your eyes, you should hopefully get about 6 hours or 8hrs+ for listening to music, 2 hrs for movies.
Also advise to buy him a 'Pelican Case' to protect the phone and hook on somewhere, not only are they manufactured in USA but they are good quality and waterproof.

This is awesome because it truly means hands free, now I almost want to replace the camera button as a shortcut button for search as it would be convenient to get to everything. I have been doing the WAREZ scene forever and I have found that more cracks don't work most of the time or they are a *pain* to setup. Yeah ok it usually just involves copying over a .exe and .dll.
To say people who have the cracked non-drm version are better off is a complete lie and I don't know how you people swallow it.
Usually when it comes to patch time 3-5weeks later it is always the crackers who are having the problems and have to go digg through the forums to find an answer. OPEN YOUR EYES!!! Go to any Warez forum and just take a look at the UBIsoft thread where all the people have given up trying to crack it and basically said "you know what, it is more trouble trying to crack this and I would rather just *buy* it"

Same thing happened with 'Splinter Cell : Chaos Theory', it sat uncracked for months and people basically said the same thing.
People did the same thing with Steam in its early days and I remember people around here claiming Steam was a disaster that would never succeed, screaming that "DRM WOULD BE THE END OF STEAM". Terrible predictions around here for almost all technology some times.

If you think your business model will work of non-drm than prove it, you can't apply the open source model to it either because that fails also and don't drag up the minority 3 games that are blockbuster on Linux now because they are lame in comparison to any other platform games.
I have never not once ever pirated a game and than bought it afterwards, that would be beyond idiotic. Why would I pay for a game I have already played?

Nothing unusual around here though..... +5 Insightful comments that do not represent the market or its opinion at all.
Cry me a river over the silly arguments of "ooooh they're too greedy and they get too much money"

Same crap is happening in the Android market as we speak, it is being ruined by pirates and astronomical pirating statistics. Hence the upcoming added DRM to the apps that will be added soon (2.2/3.0), which should hopefully lure some developers who were hesitant to touch the Android platform. Sorry to bring the bad news.
