Uh, you aren't allowing Sony to use your spare cycles, you're allowing Folding@Home (or more broadly, Stanford University's Pande Group) to use your spare cycles. And they are a non-profit organization who releases their findings for free. So, yes, you as part of the public can access the information you helped discover for free.
Even if Sony WAS a scientific conglomerate trying to find a cure, would you really want to put a hamper on reducing millions of deaths just because you don't want them to earn money? Please avoid discarding your common sense in favor of bashing a corporation you don't like. Oh, wait, this is Slashdot.
On a related note, check out this article in ITtoolbox called Look At All Of These Passwords!. Apparently, the public terminals at DefCon had illicit listeners. It's pretty amazing how many popular sites don't have any safeguards against a linux user using ettercap.
In an alternate universe, Dashslot has a story about Wicrosoft accidentally leaking information about Mindows Vista having only one version. A reader commented about how disappointed he was that Wicrosoft is forcing you to pay for a million features you won't use, and how much more efficient it would be to purchase only the features you will.
Your logic is flawed. You are comparing all tangents of downloading movies (data line costs, hard drive wear and tear) to just the price of a Blockbuster rental. What about the car you used to drive there? Wear and tear on the engine, tires, chance of accidents, gas prices, etc. What about the effects you have on global warming by driving there? You're comparing apples to oranges.
This is a typical Slashdot boilerplate story. There will be exactly:
- 28 comments regarding the problems with automated systems to determine human problems - 21 comments regarding the fact that current customer service is just as bad as robots - 14 comments regarding robots in other areas being inefficient and as such will be useless in this field - 4 comments regarding the new robot overlords - 3 comments regarding Soviet Russia where you solve robot problems - 2 comments regarding South Korea where old people solve robot problems - 1 comment summarizing this entire story
You can't be serious. Solid-state memory is MUCH faster than normal hard drives. The read/write speeds of solid-state memory are close to that of RAM due to the fact that there is no hard drive "head" that needs to physically move around the platter.
If you're interested in Search Engine Optimization, the tool can be used like the Overture Keyword Selector Tool. Similar results are obtained with both, which is interesting all in itself. A guy built an interface similar to Overture to use with Google Suggest.
Other than that I can't think of a real use... I usually know what I want to search for on Google. It could help optimize queries I guess (see the "number" of results before hitting submit, but not the quality...)
From TFA:...the terms of which were approved on Tuesday by a California judge. Of course, Tuesday being November 22nd, the day this article was run. So, if you were to RTFA, you would find that this lists the newest developments in this case, not the stuff from six weeks ago.
Does anyone else find it odd that in practically all the benchmarks, the single core processors beat out the dual core processors? Each core in the dualies has the same processor as a single core, so why would that be?
This has been done before. You start a company with a more or less reasonable business plan requiring millions of start-up capital. You get people on board with the cash. You go public to get even more cash and then you eventually burn up the start-up capital, claim you need millions more to continue, either you get more cash or you then close up shop. The founders/majority shareholders get out of it with a nice big profit.
All the while in order to stay within the boundaries of a legit business so you can't get prosecuted, you DO spend some money on some product development... Just not at the levels you SHOULD be if you fully intended to bring the company into full fruition.
Another strategy for the prime founder(s) is to make yourself such a pain in the ass that the other share-holders buy you out (again, at a huge profit). Wouldn't surprise me if you eventually hear that Bachus buys out Roberts.
By then of course the company is a bleeding shell with no hope of recovery and the original founder is living large.
The most telling indicator that this is true is that none of the major retailers will let you pre-order a Phantom through their site. You could preorder a PStwo on the dat it was announced at EBgames.com. However, neither they nor GameStop, Amazon, Best Buy, nor any other site I can find will let you pre-order the Phantom, officially coming out well within the pre-order window of most games & consoles. If the stores don't think it's going to happen, it's not going to happen.

If Pacman's ghosts were replaced by rolling boulders, it would have nearly no violence. Discuss.
And if GTA's prostitutes were replaced by rolling boulders...
I thought we already cleaned the internet earlier this month...
Acuvue Advance with HydraClear. Its all you need.
Is there a case I can use for my IBM Thinkpad? All these bags and cases say they're meant for Powerbooks...

What's stopping someone from using this to anonymously download pirated content, or worse, child porn?

I'm still waiting for the most important benchmark: frames per second in molten core combat.
Molten Core Combat? Is that another one of those games that came out for the PC 6 years ago and just got ported to the Mac?
Because OLEDs can show color and animations instead of just white letters/numbers.
Tiny screens that shouldn't use too much power? Sounds like a job for OLEDs.
how do you other geeks deal with girlfriends whose laptops are better than yours? aarrgghh ... :)
Slashdot readers don't have to worry about that.

Happy Holidays to all Slashdotters, by the way

In the US, most people don't have internet lines fast enough to support streaming video.
Does anyone else find it odd that in practically all the benchmarks, the single core processors beat out the dual core processors? Each core in the dualies has the same processor as a single core, so why would that be?
The question is... do they have DRM?
What sort of DRM will it have?

Not that WIP's continuing work isn't appreciated.
