  1. Re:It baffles me on ABC, CBS, and NBC Block Google TV · · Score: 1

Not only do most networks get paid by cable companies per customer (rather than based on viewership numbers), they also get much higher advertising rates on regular TV.

Wait, wait. The networks mentioned here are ABC, CBS, and NBC. Those are broadcast networks. Until very recently, they didn't get paid at all by cable companies. Since the programming was available for free over-the-air cablecos didn't see any reason why they should have to pay to carry them as well. It's only within the last year or so that this has become an issue and cablecos have had to actually work out fees they pay the networks to carry their feeds. Many people here will redoubtably recall temporary blackouts of some network stations this past year, followed a few months later by an increase in their basic cable bill. That was the cablecos bickering with the networks about the fees and then passing them on to you after they reached an agreement with them.

What about messages sent via IM services from a phone? 11. Re:Wireless, Line? on Wal-Mart To Launch Unlimited Wireless Family Plan · · Score: 1

What annoyed me more than being called an idiot was the usage of the word lines to describe phones, or accounts.

Line of Business != accounts, as all the lines are considered under one account. Phones would be an apt comparison, although years ago it used to be possible to clone a GSM SIM card and have two separate phones operate on a single "line". Today I believe only the first phone to connect to the wireless provider's network actually functions properly (the old system would have made it too easy for a family to all share a single wireless account).

Using the word "lines" to describe it is actually good, as it's a term consumers new to mobile phones (at the time they came out) could understand. They knew a traditional phone line was a single in/out connection for voice with an assigned number you'd use to reach it from another phone, having multiple physical lines separate from each other meant multiple conversations and being able to reach a specific line if you wanted because of their separate numbers. Why not carry the term to a new technology that did the same thing? If you get cable internet service and get two modems and service for both, your cableco will also refer to it as two Lines of Business for data service, even though both modems are fed from a single drop. The bandwidth for the modems is not shared. Each gets 5 Mbps down and 768 Kbps up in no relation to what the other is using.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of the Internet service you need for the Skype to function.

They offer it so they can be first to market, of course. Yeah, there isn't much demand for it now, but in five years or so there will start to be demand, and they will be ready.

How many Slashdotters here have had to deal with the service issues that come with trying out a brand-new higher speed tier from their cableco/telecom? I tried my cable company's 50 mbps service more than six months after they began offering it, and I still had a connection was was generally down between 5am and sometime after I went to bed, because they were still "tweaking" their new DOCSIS 3 network every night. By offering this service now the Electric Power Board of Chattanooga can get the kinks worked out with the few customers that do show interest in it, so when the popularity picks up they will have service with a reliability track record while their competitors are still struggling to get their ducks in a row or making vague promises of higher speeds tiers "coming soon".

This is planning for future growth, not bellyaching about having to upgrade infrastructure when they can't meet demand like the duopoly tends to do.

Am I the only one that see this?

No, but you're the only idiot who seems to be equating "line" with a physical telephone wire, where everyone else knows that "line" in this case refers to a Line of Service: an active phone number that can be used to make/receive calls and texts.

So in a "family plan" type scenario the bill would be $120/mo -- one primary phone on the account and three additional phones ($45+$25+$25+$25) and all four members would be able to talk to each other or anyone else nationwide and text without overages.
