The whole idea of a official/unofficial combo (kind of like staroffice/openoffice.org) is being fought against tooth and nail by the mozilla foundation (and as this is slashdot)

They shouldn't be required to provide an alternate logo/name. It's not Mozilla's job to work around Debian's overzealous definition of "Free". If Debian wants to say "we can't include it unless people are allowed to use it to their heart's content" they need to figure out what they are going to include instead. Debian can't take the copyrighted Firefox logo because it is not free for people to use for their own derivative works. Mozilla wants to protect the logo from that usage because it is a company logo.

Should a company not be allowed to protect a mark that identifies a program as being a product of their creation?

This is what the whole system of branding is based on. How can a consumer judge whether a product is up to the quality standards they expect from a certain company if trademarks and copyrighted logos cannot be protected and anyone can just come along with their new product and stick any name on it they wish?

If Debian applies their own patches to the Firefox source tapball without Mozilla's approval of those patches and then ditributes the package, they are doing exactly what Mozilla doesn't want, protraying a piece of software as Mozilla's work when it may or may not meet the funcationality, quality, and security standards they hold it to (joking about stability and memory leaks aside).

How many recognice the official debian logo http://www.debian.org/logos/officiallogo-100.jpg/

    404 Not Found

I see that all the time on other websites! Even those that don't exist! Damn those Debian trademark-infringing scalawags!

Add some marketing people to the mix and it all falls into place pretty well.

I actually recognize the "unofficial" logo more readily, but I realize the other is also a Debian logo. If you go to Debain's official site they have the "Debian" text in the header, but the logo is the unoffical one and does not include the bottle. Kinda confusing usage if you ask me.

What's funny is we don't even need a new player to do something like that. Just add extra DVD scene cuts at the points where you have gore/sex and maybe scenes with alternate audio tracks added if language is that much of an issue. Then have multiple "playlists" for the movie. The lower rated version can simply skip those "naughty" tracks and play the ones with the alternate audio tracks clips for the movie.

I disagree. I think the Mac version is easier.

I'm not seeing how that Wired blog supports your statement. It makes no statements whatsoever comparing the Windows to OSX version in terms of ease of use by design. All it notes is that iTunes 7 has issues, and iTunes 6.0.5 is the most popular download on Apple's site right now. Not only that, the post's conclusions are presumptuous and illogical.

    From that article:
Considering that Apple's iTunes page encourages vistors to download version 7 of the media player, the stats on the support page suggest that many Windows users are uninstalling iTunes 7 and going back to version 6.0.5.

The download stats say that iTunes 6.0.5 is the most popular download, they don't differentiate between the Mac and PC versions, so there is nothing to prove that the high popularity of version 6.0.5 is attributable to Mac users or PC users, just iTunes users.

Also, the timeframe the downloads are counted in is not listed. iTunes 6.0.5 was available for how many months before iTunes 7? Everybody on the planet is not going to upgrade in the first 24 hrs (I haven't). Unless you want to buy video content or want gapless music playback, there is little reason to download this upgrade. Add ot that people who are avoiding this version because they don't like the interface changes and people whe always wait for the .0.1 release so they can avoid the "new version" bugs.

iTunes 6.0.5 has had a little more time to rack up download stats and will not be unseated until at least that many copies of version 7 are downloaded.

I do. You need to inquire about what service is offered below "analog basic" on your local provider. Many have a step that includes mostly the local regular broadcast stations plus CNN, TBS, WGN, and CSPAN and a few others. I have this plus I have internet service through them, which necessitates unblocking some other channels (so I now get MTV, VH1, Food Network, National Geographic and a few others). Bottom line is the only stations I don't have that I wish I did are TNT (which I *did* have when I first got cable, got moved to a higher channel number) and SciFi. I could get both of these if I upgraded to full analog basic, but that would be another $20 for a gain of two stations.

And since I'm not sucked into the gateway drug nonsense of digital, I don't have a stupid external converter box that goes out every other month, and I can freely record any station I want without jumping through DRM hoops.
