  2. Paranoid to the extreme... on Hobbit Hole + World Class Fallout Shelter · · Score: 3, Interesting

I mean, I've always liked the idea of having a bunker-house, but when it's this nuts, it's a little overboard. And the page-author is full of dung (vis. the follwing quote) "If the phone lines are ever down it will not be possible to get news via the internet." What century are they in?

I'm an intern at the MIT media lab - total flex-time, free espresso, full access to BorgLab hardware and supplies for personal projects (within the bounds of reason) Also, i have parents who work at other universities in the Boston area (BU in my mum's case), so my tuition for the next four years is covered. college will cost $44,000 for 4 yrs (room, board, books) rather than $160,000-170,000. Good perk, natch?

  5. I've read the bulk of this book sitting in a store on Feed · · Score: 1

...and while the idea of the Feed and hyper-commercialized living is interesting, the prose is merely mediocre and the storyline is rather flat. The one thing that I can remember is that the protagionist seemed to lack any high-level cognitive function : I mean, communicating via semi-lingual grunts, having no emotion in regard to friends (girlfriend's death). Macborg gives this book 1.5 of 5. Worth reading only if you're really bored. But better than a lot of the really vapid YA-novel shite that has been published. Tell the kids to go read Snow Crash or something...

Hell, I'm as fanatical a mac-geek as they come and when the Gen1 iPod came out, my reaction was that it was too damn expensive, that it would flounder like the Newton did and that Apple would be lucky to recoup the development costs... ...have I been proven wrong, or what? I have to say, I just placed my order for a refurb 10GB unit... so I'm eating crow here.

All that the platnums prove is that the pop-music buying public has so little taste that they will buy whatever crap is shoved down their throats. We don't hate success, we hate crappy music.

Let's see, not only do I own ~300 volumes of SciFi + ~400 volumes of fiction and non-fiction - I've even read all of it. I patronize my local independant booksellers and rarely exit a bookstore without a new book (or two or three). My average reading "load" per week is 500-1000 pages, which is known to double during the summer. I maintain that reading in such quantity is the only thing that kept me sane during my senior year of high school, when I had 4 AP courses. I am rarely, if ever, found without a book on my person when I leave my house. Americans as a whole might read fewer books, but I read enough to make up for them. Now, off to read some Neil Stephenson.
