  1. Haven't, but... on Your Data and Cyber Business After You're Gone · · Score: 1

I saw that article when I was eating breakfast this morning and did give it some thought... it could be worth giving your passwords to a lawyer/trusted associate, but I wonder just from a geeky point of view if something like a physical key (i.e. a flash drive) with an automated password system on it might be better... just plug it in and the person has postmortum access. But then again an up-to-date password and access data list might be more useful - or you could set it up as an email based system - if you don't reset a message within a certain time block, the uber-file with all of your passwords gets sent to your lawyer or lawyer equlivient. Well, its an idea.

  3. OK, and how is this supposed to work? on Recording Industry Hopes To Hinder CD Burning · · Score: 3, Interesting

Ok, the RIAA is having a flaming hissy fit these days, but exactly how do they plan to make something like this work? Are they going to insist on "blessed" computers or will they try to encode a copy protector on the cd its self? Pretty much, any way they do this there is a very simple work around - play it on any piece of hardware and then just record the sound on your computer. I mean, how are they going to block that? Will they lobby to outlaw 1/8" headphone jacks? Good grief. The RIAA is just nuts.

My first language (other than a minimal amount of HTML) was TrueBASIC - it's really easy to learn, mainly because it involves fairly normal syntax and does not have any odd line terminators. Yes, it has only a CLI, although anyone who was inclined could fake a GUIoid object if they so desired. It is also traditionally very geeky... it is also fun. just my 2

  15. Being a nerd and antisocial on Building Social Skills in Gifted Youths? · · Score: 1

I have been classified as a nerd my entire life (being called Ben Nye the Science Guy should give you some idea). Elementary school was for the most part hell for me, I was far geeker tahn my peers (I was reading at 2.5yrs - most of them were only learning in 1st/2nd grade). Life gets much better in middle school - or it did for me. In elementary school, I simply endeared myself to adults - i found they were much easier to talk to than my seemingly brainless peers. I'm a HS senior now and AP courses are nerds and proto-nerds, so life is good (taking Photo and being the class Mac Geek doesn't hurt either - girls love to get their PSD files fixed by the nerd). 1. Have this student interact with adults - but ones who will not condescend to him, but will treat him as an equal (or at least close to it) 2. Karate sounds good, but avoid team sports at all costs (IMHO) as I found them to be little more than a reason to get teased. 3. Chess... other geeky persuits are good. 4. Get him to socialize with other nerds if at all possible - jump grades, or just find him a fellow NERD!

  22. Film, photo and life on Kodak To Stop Selling Film Cameras In U.S. · · Score: 5, Interesting

I am an advanced photo student who has not gone digital yet for the following reasons: 1. Cost - I've invested close to 2K in Nikon SLR hardware in the last four years and to duplicate such a setup in dSLR gear is EXTREMELY expensive (if I'm talking 35mm quality or better) 2. Quality - film is simply more deailed... i'll just use my negative scanner... 3. Archival: Good film negatives will last 5-10 decades... digital files are good only as long as you can read them. I would love to see a permenent 'negative'-like object for digital (platform independant & exceedingy durable. 4. B&W - to my knowledge, there is no dSLR that captures the 'metallic' aspect of good B&W negatives - and yes, I know that this is an effect of the silver emulsion... I just love it ...however, Kodak's PhD cameras were worthless anyway... just so long as they don't kill TMX-100 or Portra-200 ---
