Are you serious? Windows XP has much better hardware support AND security (SP2) then 2000. All of the years of bug fixes that have NOT gone into 2000 would have to be backported... plus Beryl? I use Beryl. Beryl is NOT ready for the masses (and technically is being reforked back to Compiz). Why would they use somerthing like that that doesn't even RUN in a Windows environment when they have their own more limited but also more stable Aero interface? I despise using Windows, and love my Linux box, but seriously, just no. Vista won't be a failure as much as you may want it to be. It will succeed as bad as it is for the same reason every previous version has, it's Windows. Like it or not people will use it. I heard these same complaints about every release of Windows in the past, the only one that did flop was Millenium.
Microsoft will SP the problems out of Vista, and in 2-3 years people will be using it in droves.
I'm still not convinced enough about Transcoding to dump my XBMC box... I've considered translating my stuff to MPEG2 or w/e the PS3 uses, but from my calculations that would be about 2 weeks of CPU time. Bleh. if Sony would release at least a Divx or Xvid codec that would help so much, but I know not to hold my breath.
I LOVE The remoteplay option on my PSP. I use it at my folks, full access to my media through my PS3. Add in the video out of the PSP Slim, and I can watch my media on any TV that's near WiFi. Only way to improve this is make the PSP it's own DLNA client, so I can go directly to my media server:)
Overall I'm quite happy with my PS3.

WTF? "Around where I live (Canada), I've never even seen a TV that takes component cables" Where the hell do you live, Inuvik? My friends 5 year old TV does component. And yes, I live in Canada. We do have TV's that were made past 1990 up here. That's your big complaint? Buy a freakin converter man. I hope I misread what you said....
Hmm well no idea how FFXI as a PS2 game would handle the PS3, but in general my PS3 is VERY quiet. It does get a bit loud if I'm playing something intense, but it's quieter then the 360's I've played (just my own experiences talkin here) I'm guessing a PS2 game isn't that intense so it might be a lot quieter.
No, and I haven't even bothered... basically FFXI runs just like on the PS2... you'll get upsampled, but if you want the gorgeous graphics of the 360, you'll NEED a 360 (or PC)
I'd kill for a PS3 port of it, but I know I'm one of the few.
"No, Universal is still in the HD DVD-only camp. Annoyingly, Fox is in the Blu-ray camp so if Firefly ever comes out in high-def, it will be a different format from Serenity.":D
Oddly enough you CAN use the Bluetooth component, however ONLY in Linux with some kernel tinkering from what I remember... in Windows for some reason you have to go through the USB port.
I never understood Sony not selling the SIXAXIS as a PC controller too, if anything 2-3 ppl would buy em for that and that's a few extra bucks. How hard can a driver be to make for it?
Ninja Gaiden might be worth checking out, I loved the demo, and although I know it's a remake, I just can't get over how beautiful the game is. I can't wait to pick it up tonight (been outa town) Heavenly Sword looks good, and of course MGS4 but that's way off the radar screens. I also really enjoy Motorstorm.
You mean the 7 year old system that until less then a year ago was their newest version of this product line? The one ours and some other straggling companies are just now switching to (literaly)? Obviously this is a gaming related thing but just saying that they should'nt be suprised that even home users still haven't all made the switch yet. Really, if you have a 1 year old computer that runs great, and you want to play one of these games, your adding $100+ to the cost for really no good reason other then to drive their bottom line. Not illegal, but sure as hell not nice.
If we were talking Windows 2000 or 98 I would see your point, but we ain't, so I don't.
Average joe doesn't look at it like that. He says a service. One service "just works" the other requires work. For the majority of people, they'd rather pay for a finished product then build it themselves. The apples / oranges would be each of these products are designed for different audiences.
I used to run both Mirroring and RAID 5 in the past (not at the same time), but I found it overly complex for simple usage, plus it doesn't allow for what happens if the controller card fails or system goes up in smoke? Plus once you build a RAID you can't just add a drive to it easily or cheaply (I'm over simplifying this I know)
I find the best is to have another computer or possibly external drives sitting somewhere, and just make weekly/daily/monthly/whatever rsync copies between them. This allows for you to recover from user error like accidental deletions, and if the entire system goes down your covered. Want more space? add a drive and presto, more space. No special configuration required. No expensive controller cards (or cheap and slow controller cards) required.
And if your like me, you have another set of drives stored offsite... but I'm pretty paranoid about such things. =P
To install XBMC on a modded XBox you... copy the files in. Configuration is all handled through the GUI.
I never got myth to install, and frankly with a package like XBMC that "just works", is free, and doesn't take hours, what does mythtv offer that XBMC doesn't? The big one would be Video Capture, but now that they're porting to Linux, hopefully they can add that. How's MythTV's scriptable interface? Never tried that, i know with XBMC there are scripts to access QuickTime trailers, YouTube, etc etc etc.
I don't get this "why have more then 1???" attitude posters are putting down here... so are you saying there should only be KDE or Gnome? Only 1 Linux? Only 1 OS? Isn't the strength of Open Source the fact your not stuck with just one????
You like Myth, use it. You like XBMC, use it. And don't complain if you use one, and someone else uses the other.
Has it ever occured to you that perhaps there are good games in there? Not all will be triple A quality, probably not even half, but I know that games like the new Ninja Gaiden are looking VERY promising. I've never played any of the earlier ones, but after playing the demo all I gotta say is WOW. Oh and here's a news flash, did you know you can get good graphics AND good game play in one package? Yes I know, it's hard to believe but the two can exist together.
BTW - although I sold my GameCube, I have several of the Nintendo games including the previous Paper one, waiting until I Can find a Wii in stock somewhere. So I don't consider myself a fanboy, just someone who likes what they like, and I like the PS3 and Wii for seperate reasons.
Like I had any say on this contract haha, not saying I know how to write em better then our yahoo's did, but the vendor definitely won this contract.
Manager's seem to love (or did) that five 9's lingo... i'm trying to point out that by itself means nothing. It's like saying my OS is rock solid.. without mentioning it's also not running anything at all.
The "five 9's" and all that is a joke anyways. We have that with our vendor... so that means we can have an office down for a solid week and they still met their goals. Just because a contract is "xyz 9's" doesn't mean jake without more info.
If I'm reading this right, your basically saying that people have no choice, because all publishers value graphics over AI, so even if people did'nt care about graphics, only AI, it would'nt matter, because there's no developer out there, right?
If so people will vote with their dollars still. If NO developer meets what people want, then ALL developers will suffer, just look at the Video game crash in the 80s. Everyone (for the most part) produced crap, and the people responded by saying screw you guys.
Of course if I'm reading what you said wrong, then nevermind:)
I'm not sure if it's default, but using the mouse wheel for me rotates the cube as well when hovering over the desktop. I'm not using Beryl atm (found it too slow for what I'm doing right now) and I'm reaaaaallly missing that feature, amongst others.
Online is great... until you have a problem with the product. I find it much easier to troubleshoot my LCD TV dieing by talking to a moron in person at a brick and mortar, then a moron over the phone at some online shop. As well I can drive over and return my $40 router and be home in 30 minutes, or I can return it to Amazon or whatever online store and wait the 4 weeks of shiping it will take (oh yeah, and probably pay for shipping too)
They've been saying Brick and Mortar would die since the late 90s, I don't think it will, not until they install a teleporter for instant delivery.
What I really wanted was the new CPU's that apparently run cooler then the existing ones, and I think from what I read on Engadget the Elite won't have em yet. HDMI and a real hard drive would have been nice, but I'm gonna keep on waiting me thinks. And right now my 8 year old TV only supports S-Video anyway until I upgrade later this year.
Huh? No the point to take from this was I'm sharing my experience, not stating what I feel is zomg stats that show PSP beats DS. I have seen more PSP's, so I was asking the question, you provided a counter argument. I hope it's ok for me to share experiences... Or maybe I should put in a disclaimer with every post I make saying I'm only one guy and not a professional, take what i say with a grain of salt? This is slashdot, that should go without saying.

Oh look, the PS3 FINALLY DROPPED to 2nd spot since it becamse #1 after the price drop. Unless Amazon is really just in bed with Sony.

Good grief man, stop spreading FUD. That's in 30 seconds of checking, I'm sure you can do cheaper.

Ya wtf, it's been available for awhile up here. And not just "import" stores, i'm talking big box stores like Best Buy and Futureshop.

Just 2 cents from a random

No kidding, however I don't think that is a PS3 problem, as much as a gaming in general problem.
