That is quite interesting, as a Final Fantasy XI player, Japanese style emotes or w/e they are called are VERY popular, even in the North Am circles. Although it's interesting to see how we interpret them different. ^.^ (or just ^^) I always used as a smily type thing, and -_- as angry or kinda P.O.'ed at somethin. Not sure if that's the evolution of the smiley, or just us Westerners butchering their system:P
I heard this, and it makes sense, but I was able to play at least World of Warcraft via Cedega (Wine) no problem, although it did have an impact on performance... 6800 Ultra, P4 3.2, 2G of RAM. I occasionaly ran into issues, but then again I occasionally ran into issues with Beryl even if I did nothing. Guess I got lucky.
Hopefully between maturing of this software, and ATI opening their drivers, stuff like this should'nt be an issue for tooooooo much longer.
Ahh the memories you made me remember... before I knew what I was doing (some may say I still don't) with computers, I used Doublespace (NOT the improved, yet still horrific, DriveSpace in 6.22) so that our... 250 meg? hard drive would have 500 megs! It was great... until some software stopped working, took longer to do stuff, and made the mistake of rebooting it while defragmenting the partition.
Chkdsk ran for a good 6 hours that night, and did'nt help much:/
Young, stupid, and enough knowledge to royally f* something up. Miss those days.
With the war not over perhaps it's a bit premature to say, but currently I don't see the war on terror equaling the war for independence either. Although the death toll in that war was far less then either WW, it had a pretty big impact on the world stage (be interesting in a world without the US as we know it)
Hey, if this whole thing was to balloon into a thermonuclear war, I'll take back my statement, but right now I don't feel thats the case. Right now the war is confined to one area of the world for the most part, and other then peace keeping forces doesn't involve the entire world yet, not to the extent of WW1 or 2 anyways.
I mean hey we could compare WW1 and 2 to the Crusades, Alexander the Great, Napoleon Mongol invasion of China, etc all day...
I generally leave ad's on, I don't care if there's a banner at the top of the page or somet stuff on the side, it doesn't make a difference to me and yes, hosting websites are never free, someone has to pay for the bandwidth and salaries of someone keeping the site up. If someone provides me a free service, and makes their revenue by showing a banner, so be it.
Only in cases where it is extremely annoying or in your face, stuff like popups, sound, or where the adserver is so slow it make an impact on serving (i refuse to sit and wait literaly a minute for each page load just so I can ignore an Ad.. let's see "open page" wait a minute "click search" wait a minute "search" wait a minute "find out it's not what i wanted, click search again" wait a minute yadda yadda) The morality of that may be questionable, but that's what I do.
All I ask is please, PLEASE, don't make my computer talk (audio) when I do a search. I often have about 4-5 tabs open with various search results. If you want to do video that's cool, I appreciate your a company, and there's nothing wrong with making money.
I admit I haven't rtfa'ed, but I just want to be clear since you seem to be someone that has some say / cares about what we think. Audio makes me cry (and use adblockers:S)
You realize GI Joe wasn't about a cartoon, and existed before yours (and my) generation cared about GI Joe? I don't think that their generation was better, per say, but being in an extraordinary situation, lead to extraordinary people standing out. What their generation did should not be taken lightly, however. The "wars" we do now, honestly, pale compare to the wars of WW1 and WW2.
About half of the ppl I have seen leave XI for WoW have returned, myself I got bored with WoW, although I think that's just my style moreso then a slam against it. Plus like you, most of my friends are already entrenched in one of the games, and it's the ppl that make the experience I say.
If you decide to join XI, you can chose servers now, so feel free to send a tell to Killataru on Remora and I'll help you get on your feet!
a WEEK? ouch.. thats unheard of for the new guys I've met, the first 10 levels are usually done in 2-3 days if your not grinding too hard, a single night if you want to get it over with and have a power leveler. I'm not much of a grinder, so my last job was 3 days to 10 I think. But your right, it IS a grinder of a game. Better then before, but still a grinder.
I still play the game, and enjoy it (the people really make the game), and seeing what SE now does with the game makes me wish they started it earlier. Things like more open communication, the agressive anti RMT tactics, heck even commiting to building in the capability to run FFXI on a Window in a PC. SE has definitly improved relations as of late, and I've seen several friends come back after a year to reenjoy the game.
The game is more dated then WoW, sure, but still fun I find. I can't wait to finish the story arcs, something I've been trying to focus on moreso now then before.
It's more of a grinder game, and I wish they'd allow XP to be done via quests, like in WoW. I imagine it has at least 2, maybe 3 years left in it. Hell even UO is still running.
I'm hoping that the big client rewrite they're doing (if your really curious, go read the interview on ffxiclopedia.org or w/e it is) that will allow it to run in a window will fix this. Updating it to Dx9, so here's hopin...
And I made up the other 2 ppl, I don't think they exist:-(
Um... ever hear of a game called World of Warcraft? or how about a game called Doom or Quake? Transgaming, the makers of Cedega / Wine, have had deals with EA (you may have heard of them before) in the past, for their Mac software sure, but to say that Linux is still completely off the map is a bit short sighted. I still prefer Windows for gaming, sure, but Linux gaming has come a LOOOOOONG ways from even a few years ago.
Now if someone would find a way to get FFXI running under Linux, me and the other 3 people on the planet that care about that would be quite happy.:P
It's great if you travel light without a laptop or other mail capable device but near internet cafe's (like I did last year, also this way you have a gmail or w/e and assuming it's temporary, not giving out your REAL email / internet account password in an unsecured environment). Just one example. I prefer my IMAP, mind you, but webmail does serve a purpose.
What I'm wanting is bluetooth headphonees.. i HATE that stupid dangling wire, i mean yeah i know it's not a big deal, but to have small, sleek, good sounding bluetooth headsets for a reasonable cost to use on my MP3 Player.. I'd be all over that.
Wait what? Are you comparing the XBox with the PS3? Um... in that case, PS2 has a bigger library then the 360, so it, er, pwnz it? Thats like saying the PS2 has Final Fantasy X and XII, so LOL at the 360?
The problem is, when someone is hostile towards you, you retaliate. Inside a country that means go to prison (or beat the crap outa em). Country to country, that COULD mean a whole lot more like war. I find that happening to be very unlikely, however.
This reminds me of the cold war days, I seriously doubt the US will do much over this, because it's quite possible the US is doing it to them. I'd be suprised if they weren't. I think most countries realize that espionage is a fact of life, and everyone does it on everyone. Even between allies. As long as the espionage doesn't result in a major shift of power one way or another, not much other then a few angry words is gonna be done.
You realize Ubuntu did'nt make up this system, right? Ever hear of Longhorn? MS, and pretty much every development shop in the known universe, uses code names too, no sane person would say let's install Dapper Drake! They'd say Ubuntu 6.06 (or just 6, or just UBUNTU)
Really... +5 for that sack of lies huh? You know you remind me of stories from my dad's Aunt and Uncle who were missionaries in Cuba and Russia, and the lies that were spread about them. I can't believe you would insult so many of your past presidents, and call them all psychotics like that. I suppose, however, by slaming Christianity it's OK. Saying the same thing about any other religion would probably have this marked as Flamebait. Not that I would condone that, I actually BELIEVE in Freedom of Religion. And God. wow. What a concept huh?
Using your same logic, all teachers are bad, as I know of one that had "relations" with his underage students. Yes, let's stereotype more! This is what will bring the might US of A back on track. Why, just look at how wonderful things are in the US now that there is such anti-religious elements. Hell, using your logic, I know a NUMBER of Athiests that do meth... do they all do meth then? They MUST!
Can you please show me where in the Bible it says to do Crystal Meth, and to be bad people? I missed that bit.
After all, a majority should be punished for the minorities actions, right? As long as we believe in what you tell me to, the world will be just fine, right?
To be honest, I always thought if they had released the QD first, it MIGHT have done OK. Not great, but not the laughing stock it became. I actually heard from some ppl that bought one that it wasn't that bad. However by the time the QD came out it was far far FAR too late. At least a name change woulda helped, but the N-Gage = laughing stock.
My problem is integrating a library with em... I'm by no means a pro at programming, but I don't think it should be nearly as complex as it is to add libraries such as SDL to Eclipse, KDevelop, or Ajunta (or w/e it's called) Or importing existing code into a project. As much as I hate em, I still haven't found an IDE as polished as MS's Visual Studio (yeah yeah all you really need is gcc and vi, but I like my Full on IDE damnit:D)

I've often wondered why we have this lingering hold on FTP and Telnet. I brought up switching to SSH instead of Telnet years ago at my company, our equipment could do it, but got shot down because "it may have it's own insecurities. "
I'm sure it does, but hacking it is a lot less trivial then some cleartext crap. If they can hack SSH, they probably coulda hacked Telnet in half the time.
Try Canada... we probably won't even GET the iPhone up here, because what's the point when unlimited data doesn't even exist anymore. I think the top end data plan I saw was $200 a MONTH for 500 megs. Basic plans are about 4 meg's a month, and $12 per meg on top of that. I have a grandfathered, $50 a month for unlimited painfully slow GPRS, and even got someone asking to buy my account for quite a bit of $ because of it. Unless your rich or in an Enterprise organization there's no reason to have a smartphone up here with data capabilities. Oh and we get the same phones as the US, usually several months after the fact. As bad as the plans may be in the US compared to the rest of the world, it's still leaps and bounds beyond what we get.
"I will not disagree that the PS3 has been selling better since the price drop, but it is still selling nowhere near the rate of the Wii."
Which is all I was trying to show... yesh. Anyone saying the 360 or PS3 will overtake the Wii anytime soon is smoking some pretty strong stuff. I would'nt be suprised to see the Wii outsell the PS2 for alltime sales at some point. Nintendo hit a grand slam with this.
What this shows is what I was trying to show, which is that sales went UP. It was NOT #1, or #2, before the sale. No I can't prove that because I can't go back in time and show you a web page. However I think it's fairly safe for you to assume the PS3 is not Amazon's #2 selling console before the price drop. You can "trust" me on that, unless you think the PS3 has always outsold the 360? It also shows it's currently selling MORE then the 360. I don't remember saying that the PS3 was outselling the Wii, just that sales went up. Yesh! It was asked for a non Sony source of info that sales went up, and it DID. In fact, if I wasn't at work, I could go to Joystiq and link you the article showing that the PS3 sales went up on Amazon.com from about 2 weeks ago. Good grief, in fact I'm GLAD the Wii is #1 again, I'm GLAD that Nintendo is doing well and did'nt go under like the doom sayers said they would. Go underdog. Leave the fanboism at home ok?
