I run WoW in Linux, I only have one box for Windows and I don't want to be sitting at my windows laptop when I have a nice dual head display setup on my workstation with a better video card. If they ban me then so be it, there's money back per month for me. Usually the Blizzard guys are pretty good, so a bit disappointed if this is the path they are wanting to go.
Eh.. instead of removing the quiet splash, you could just choose the second option..recovery i think (it's early and i'm not at my Ubuntu box) This way you see all the messages, and it automatically bumps you to a command line console. Very useful when for some reason lm-sensors was preventing X from loading.
Alternatively if it bothers you that much, just permanently remove the quiet splash option from grub (been tempted to do that myself). By default it looks as nice as possible, which I think is the goal they're looking for. If you need to do bootup diagnostics, it's easier to do then Windows I think, and anyone that those words displayed would mean anything to, they should be able to figure out how to remove the quiet splash option or choose recovery.
Anyone reminded of the 360 launch? Not trolling, but wasn't that the same complaint? Or am I mistaken?
Limited numbers, ports / sports only at launch... although I'm picking up a PS3 first (well.. assuming they get another batch out before year end), I think the Wii win's for best launch.
I can't see that... Even as much stupid stuff as Sony has done, I can't see them doing something as suicidal as that. I think this will be closer to the 360 shortages and ya you'll be out of luck for awhile, but not nearly half a year.
I remember reading recently that any PS2 hard drive based games like FFXI and some others will not run on the PS3 for now, but there is a future patch coming down.
Fishing??? Didn't know there was any in the game *smacks forehead in disbelief* Hunts were as close as I found to a mini game so far. Far from done tho
Honestly the gameplay is keeping me going more then the graphics, and i do like the graphics. I really didn't like the battle system in the demo, but being able to get used to it... I'm a believer in Gambits now. Yes the game can "play itself" almost... but you can also tone it way down. I'm actually wishing I had more gambits to customize the characters further (you get more as you can find / buy them). It feels like a lot of freedom... no more omg i better heal that guy asap, because I know my healer will watch him and keep him going. Quickinings (super attacks) were confusing initially... but now that I got the hang of it I can pull off some crazy stuff. This feels like the most polished one yet. If you can try before you buy thats always good, everyones got their own tastes... but i'm seriously hooked. Good voice acting. And I prefer the license system vs spheres in FFX. No "mini game" tho which is surprising... I'd like to see them return one of the card games from 8 or 9.
This argument holds as much water, as saying that the PS3 is selling like crazy because all two PS3's at a store sold out already for pre orders. Being first, out of one place, does not make a race.
I don't get the camping thing either... ok camping for a movie... you wanta good seat, that I can see. But with preorders.. what are you accomplishing? It's preordered... assuming they're not gonna jerk you around it will be there when you show up at noon or whatever. The only way I can see it work for the Wii is if they're not allowed to have all their units for preorder, and you weren't able to preorder in time... then ya, standing in line for the remaining units might make sense (assuming standing in line for a console makes sense)
as for the ps3... if your #3 or worse in the line your probably f'ed. Go home.
As for the Wii, me personally I want to see what the average joe thinks of the Wiimote first... then I'll buy it. Or maybe have a friend buy it and I can try his out. The PS3, assuming the games are better then the 360 line up is so far, I'll buy. And assuming it doesn't blow up or something like that. I think this is a good generation to not be first in line.
Tell me what I had to soder the connectors back on for after a botched "let's take apart and look see" That was NOT fun for a solder n00b like me. This was the silver Japanese version (the one with really crappy backwards compatability I hear now), maybe the North Am one's are different?
Read the other response to my post. I'll agree with him and we can agree to disagree. He is right. If it's bothersome to you then you fight your fight. If it's not bothersome to me, I won't join your fight. Each to their own. You obviously feel much stronger about this then I do. You win.
You consider sweat shops a "silly, completely inappropriate example"? Thanks for taking one term you did'nt like and ignoring the rest of my response.
Sorry if saying eating babies you found offensive or whatever it was you found it, but I figured that was the terminology used on slashdot (Lord knows i've read enough about Sony eating babies to figure using it as an anti example would have worked.)
No I don't plan on buying a Vaio anytime soon... I value price and features over looks... but I know some people that don't care if it's "as fast" as a beige box, they want one that looks good. And trust me the L looks hot. That's who Sony's computers are geared towards.
Hence i said they did some dumb stuff lately. With that said, nothing you listed are cause enough for me to "hate with a passion" any company. Now, if you mentioned something like oh I dont know, slave labor, eating babies, that sorta thing... then yes... Sony Should Burn. So far the only tech company in the news about sweat shops was Apple, and although that was questionable as to their direct involvement I dont see nearly as much hatred for directly causing harm to members of the human race vs "the important stuff like music DRM"
I gave up on ATI... not bad stuff per say, but nVidia actually had the card out when I wanted one (ATI is/was a "canadian" company and you could'nt buy their top end in canada... nice), and I got tired of the hoops to jump through in Linux to make them work. nVidia for me "just worked"
Note... this is back when 6800 Ultra nVidia's were king, I haven't bought / needed to buy one since. I'm quite happy with my Ultra. Previously to that I had a 9600 Pro, also a good card, but a pita for linux compared to nVidia.
Hmmm... outside of your world things might be different. The last Ryokan I stayed in Tokyo at, had no less then four Sony computers for guests to use. Including the very sweet L series Vaio, dont think it'll make it stateside tho, shame because that would work great for what my mom needs / wants (functional and good lookin) Plus last I counted they still make the PS2... a product that a few would consider "a worthy product" Plus even tho the software is no iTunes, I actually do enjoy my NWA-3000 Sony Walkman. Showed it to a friend of mine, and if he could buy one over here, he would. I don't run "only" sony... i don't own a Sony computer, I have a Kenwood surround sound setup etc etc... so I don't consider myself much of a fanboy. I'll probably buy a Wii first, then maybe a PS3 (360... if a game of interest for me comes out)
With that said... I do agree with the one point where comparing myself vs someone that is on 20x more then me doesnt' tell me much... other then he may not have as much of a life as I do. But then again I never really got "into" XBox Live either so I guess i'm not the target audience.
Ya Sony has done some dumb stupid things, but then again I don't think they're worthy of my hatred yet. I am curious why I haven't read on/. here about some PS3 articles i've read on other sites, talking about where they have seen a PS3 in action, seems to run cooler then a 360 etc etc. Still early maybe that article is below, since I know Slashdot doesn't just run negative Sony stories and all that.
Agreed... I'm tempted to move my mom over since she just browses and listens to some audio broadcasts (gotta research all that out) but I won't do it until I get her a new box. And then it's 50/50 between Ubuntu or a Mac Mini (it would really fit with the decor where she has it, and to her that's probably one of the most important things)
However if I cannot get exactly what she does working on an on Windows box... she is keeping Windows. After 18 years of her bringing me up providing support on the phone is nothing.
I prefered the one previously, Dead Simple... but ya tricks and traps was pretty sweet only to see some of the "amazing" things you could do with the game... well ok, amazing for the time. D2 is still a fun game to blast through now and again =D
Nothing like watching a group of Barons and a Cyber beat the living crap out of each other.
Could'nt agree more. I did a search for E1M1 to see if someone else posted first already and here it is:P I forgot about the HL level your talking about until now... that was INTENSE. At the time I had never played anything like it, that was massive immersion for me.
Another two levels that pop in for me are from Doom2... Level 7 or 8, "Dead Simple" was insane, and Playing Level 16 the Suburbs on Nightmare in Co Op with a friend... thats some crazy action.
I guess I don't think of suing someone unless it's a REALLY BIG DEAL like life or death. Obviously some people feel that inconvenience is worth their time and effort to sue. wow, hanging up on auto dial takes up HOURS A DAY for me)
Ugh read up... yesh sorry for my example. I don't care if it's big or small, non profit or not. If your auto dialing me I'm not going to sue. Likewise, if a non profit that feeds starving children is dumping waste in my backyard I would sue them too. It's not big corp vs small guy, its out of everything wrong in this world that I could go through the effort of doing a lawsuit for, AUTO DIALING IS NOT IT.
If it was calling about fighting cancer or about GWB or Donald Trump selling his book, I still would'nt care. Sorry if I made it sound like a big vs small thing, but it's not to me. I just personally find suing about phone calls a waste of time (imo), and suing about toxic sludge being dumped illegally not a waste of time. Like I said in a post above... show me a small tiny non profit dumping sludge illegally, and I'll be all for suing them. Show me a big company cleaning up their act, I'll cheer.
No. i don't care if it's big corporation dialing me, or non profit. I don't like it. But I'm not at a point where I think I'm going to promote suing them into oblvion for THAT. If a small tiny non profit dumps sewage into my backyard, I'll sue em too. It's not big vs small. It's truley important issue vs trivilalities.
I own windows already. I did'nt buy windows to play FFXI. I'd have to buy an XBox 360, and right now only FFXI interests me. I did have it on PS2. Graphics stunk so bad I could'nt handle it. If I bought the 360, and an HD TV to get the quality of graphics I'm used to seeing in XI, then maybe. But that's a few grand away. I'll stick with my 2 year old PC, mmk-thanks.
I also use Windows for non gaming. Software development, some devices that wont run under Linux etc.
Let's not go into the "omg that game sucks just stop playing it" arguments. "Oh ok, some dude told me to stop playing FFXI because he says it's sucks, so I'll listen" Let me just leave it as this: I have fun in FFXI. The moment I dont have fun I will stop playing. Until then I'll keep playing. If you dont enjoy it, dont play it. If you do, do. Simple as that. Because you feel one way about the game has, amazingly, NO BEARING ON ME.
Well.. if there's one thing we need in North America, it's more lawsuits!!
The idea of a "how to sue" guide is personally rather sickning, unless your helping someone fight a big evil corporation dumping sewage into your water supply or something like that. Just because they call you? Sorry, no thanks. Annoying yes. Worth suing? No. No. And more NO.

Now to get my caffine hit.
