I am a professional software developer for a rather large industry player also. I am certainly not a hobbyist. I also was not defending opensource (something I won't do much anyway as I think it already has enough apologists), but rather retorting to the statement on installing the .net framework. Please tell me more about your "lighting fast native code" as I am interested in seeing how fast "lighting is".... or actually, no, just go piss off somewhere instead.

  2. Re:bottom line on Pro C# · · Score: 1

Is this any different then needing to install the GTK Runtime or the J2SE Runtime or really any of the other prequesites out there for many other programing languages? At least with the .Net Framework many users already have it or can easily get it with Window's update. Personally I think "pro" code will come with an installer that takes care of the prereqs but many pro software utilities still don't include these (for example KANA).

The downside of course is the limited platform capabilities, but even that has a glimmer of hope in the future with projects like mono.

...but we all know how strongly Apple protects information about upcoming products. Do you seriously think that Creative could have developed this product in the 2 months since the Ipod G5 release? Or do you think they would let Creative, a company they are competing against, get ahold of design specs on their product? More likely is the fact that once a player shape is chosen (and Creative has been doing the Zen/rectangle design for a while) there are only so many ways to arrange the product. You either go with a sideways design like the big Vision or you go with a horizontal design like the Vision M, Ipod G5.

Then you will be glad to know that the patent application was filed before the Ipod was released. Apple did in fact attempt to patent the UI, but were rejected due to (get this) prior art...namely the Creative UI application.

Of course one has to consider that the Jukebox was out in September of 2000, which I doubt Creative did overnight either. I bet Creative spent as much time developing their system as Apple did. Which would place Creative about a year ahead of Apple on this. Of course maybe Apple did do it in 9 months, they didn't have to develop a UI after all...it was already done for them.

The scary part is that I am a Linux guy at heart, but come on let's be consistant here.

Well, I would say its pretty Creative of them. Given the fact that they applied for the "Carmack Reverse" patent years before he even thought of it means that they probably had some talented guys working on it. They also had the original Jukebox out over a year before the Ipod was announced (meaning that it is more likely that Apple just copied their development). I guess it is possible that they developed a time machine, went into the future and stole the ideas from Apple and ID (however that would be very Creative) but I think its more likely that they had it first. This is what patents are about, right? Allowing someone who creates something to be able to profit from it without fear of having it stolen and exploited.

I am just curious as to why anyone cares so much that Napster has introduced a subscription service. Seems to me that more options = better. I bet all this angst is coming from the fact that it was Napster using WMA DRM 10 and not Apple with its AAC format that did this first.

If you want to "Own" your music then go out and buy your music from a CD store. If you want to fill your player with music, then choose a good online store. To me Napster right now has the better option on filling up my MP3 player.

I kinda see Pixar in the same way I see Nintendo, a company that manages to take "kiddie" concepts and make them entertaining to Everyone. If you watch the movies you will notice that often times when there is a bit of slapsticky humor that would normally be funny to kids, but a bit over the top for adults, they throw in a bit of irony that would miss most kids.... and then the adults and the kids are laughing. Like the pylon scene in Toy Story where they are crossing the road, my friends kid was dying over the silliness of them being in pylons whereas I was laughing cause I was thinking, "I was on that road today". Don't be so quick to judge what appears to be childish only on its appearance. Just look at the upcoming movie...tell me that a superhero comedy isn't aimed at least a little at many of us 20-somthings. I for one will be seeing it.

It is a lot of work for people to mod systems to support it, but if work becomes standardized, then there is all kinds of people looking for a easy, quick way to play their SNES games without having to take the time (or space) to hook up the old console.

Most books are written to entertain, it is the rare classics that transend entertainment. Not to mention, the most popular video game of all time is Tetris, and that hardly could be called "eye catching"... it's how fun the game is that makes it worth playing.

The problem with your thinking here is that you seem to regard the SNES as being made in the infancy of video games, and that is hardly true. The SNES (and the Sega Genesis) was the system that turned the corner for the gaming industry. It was the SNES that helped convince Sony that real money and real entertainment could be had through video games again (since the crash in the early 80's many still regarded the industry as very risky). I love my modern technology and games, but many SNES games continue to shine a decade after their release. It's like books, no one says "Why read classic books, how many times can we sit and read 'A Tale of Two Cities' now? Isn't the progression to new literary techniques so that we can read new stories, not reheat old ones" Not trying to mock, just making a point.

First off, Apple does not hold over 90% of the desktop market. If it wants to be propriatary it isn't killing competition. When MS does it however, they manage to lock out other companies from the 90+% of the market that they are targeting. The fact of the matter is this, if MS continues to use no-complient HTML in their browser and also continues to forces the use their IE browser in windows, then people can't choose to use linux/free BSD/Mac OS unless they use a MS based browser (which they don't always keep updated). "Why?", you ask, because if 90% of the people use one OS with one browser, then many sites will be written to comply to that non-complient code and you get the errors that we see today: "This Page Requires I.E. 6.0 to view." Then you no longer base your choice on preference, but on the ability of the other browsers to function (since the DMCA causes problems with trying to emulate functionality).

And that is why it is bad for MS to be allowed to force their Browser upon their Windows XP.

    I could be wrong however.
