  1. Mission accomplished.. on Shrek 2 How-To · · Score: 2, Insightful

As part-time animator myself, I think that is probably some of the better compliments you can receive. If it's real enough to get passed that you are watching an animated film and bring your characters to life, mission accomplished!

  2. Interesting info... on Shrek 2 How-To · · Score: 5, Interesting
"Of all the advances on this film, I think that our use of global illumination was the biggest technology breakthrough," asserts Bielenberg. "Ray tracing/global illumination/radiosity techniques have been out there for a number of years, but it has been price-prohibitive to utilize them significantly. For Shrek 2 we used global illumination for 80% of the shots. "It's our own renderer, and it's been re-written since the first Shrek. We developed a bounce light technique that --given a key light -- automatically computes the correct bounce light off of the other objects in the scene. If the light bounces off of a yellow wall, it will bounce back yellow in character.

They re-wrote an entire renderer? Granted, Shrek is still behind some of Pixar's work but i've got to ask... Why not use some of the other renderer tools out there?

I kind this kind of funny and for IBM it couldn't have started at a better time. Microsoft, dilligently working on Longhorn, seems to have turned towards something other than "web-linked" software. They have turned their heads more towards search technologies and fighting a losing battle with Google. Like any corporate american company, they will turn their business to where the money is. Right now, it seems that searching is where the majority of that money will funnel to and Microsoft seems to struggle if they need to support more than 1 thing at a time.

Best quote from the article... "While IBM's products run on Windows, it wants its customers to see how nicely they would run on Linux as well, using the free operating system as a lure. Well, I was going to comment and see what, if anything, Juniper Networks was going to come out with but I found a NYTimes article to answer it otherwise. Here's a snippet:

"Juniper Networks has individual routers that are at least as fast, but the company cannot combine as many routers to ultimately produce the same speeds, according to Chris Nicoll, a telecommunications industry analyst with Current Analysis, a research firm."

    and more....

"The new router design is the first developed by Cisco that allows several routers to be connected, according to the company. A single router would be able to transmit data at 1.2 terabits a second. But as many as 72 routers can be hooked together to send data at 92 terabits a second, far faster than any router sold now. In telecommunications, data transfer is usually measured in bits per second. A terabit is one trillion bits. "

Considering that the largest earthquake ever in Washington was a 7.3 in 1874 and that this was largely just discovered a few years ago, perhaps this is a precursor to something big about to happen? More recently was a 1949 earthquake that measured 7.1 near Olympia.

From the Science Daily article..."Making that determination will help in understanding whether they are adding to or relieving stress in the Cascadia subduction zone off the Washington and B.C. coast, where the Juan de Fuca plate dives beneath the North American plate. The subduction zone is capable of generating great earthquakes, and scientists recently determined that a Cascadia earthquake in 1700 measured about 9.0 in magnitude."

And Wired... "The coastal region of northwest Washington state and southeast British Columbia is prone to earthquakes, and scientist warn the area gets hit with a devastating shake of magnitude 9 about every 500 years."

Sure.. we're only 196 years off the 500 year mark since the last 9.0, but for it only to pop up a few years ago makes it seem very ominous.

This data, while very interesting, could still go 2 ways. It is helping to alleviate and prevent major earthquakes in that area, or it's a major precurosr to a huge event that could happen in the near future. The hard part? What is considered teh near future... tomorrow? 5 years? 10 years? Guess we'll have to wait and see.

What's even more interesting is that I have yet to see any reports about this coming from any of the California plates, perhaps it hasn't been found or tested for or it's just not there.. Who knows.

I also work on a military installation and it takes forever to be able to choose a password. Not only do you have to use the basic methods already described here, but it also cannot be similar to used passwords or dictionary passwords in any way. Therefore, it checks for a password such as keyboard23 or 2clock10. Add that with all the other password tricks (alphanumeric, etc..) and it takes a good 5 minutes to pick a password before the system takes it.
