I'm sure I'm not the only geek curious to know whether the city will use standard consumer Wifi APs from Linksys, DLink or the like, or go for either custom or industrial-level (Cisco) hardware?

Yes exactly that. Bear in mind that the name Netscape still has tremendous recognition: Firms which would jib at the idea of installing "open-source" software might have fewer fears if the product was backed up with support from AOL.
Geeks like us will continue to use and recommend the "true" firefox but the Netscape browser may be able to win some people over who would otherwise have stuck with internet explorer

To be perfectly honest, I chose the words hard-line Islamist after some consideration as I didn't want to unduly annoy either camp!. I'm a regular reader of al-Jazeera and frankly, I don't think they're an extremist portal but they are quite hard-line in their editorialising, and willing to go slightly beyond the normal reporting role in relaying messages from (terrorist/freedom-fighter according to what side you're on) ~ groups.
Still worth reading, though. But then, I'm the last person who'd be accused of kissing american ass.....
Firefox is the new Netscape (no, really)

And no, I'm not talking in fashion terms. Netscape announced they intend to release a branded version of Firefox.
It was announced in this posting on MozillaZine, and on registering on the link provided, a private forum is available which currently has nothing in it except an announcement that Netscape's Firefox will be available on 30 Nov.
Looks like it'll have a green custom skin from the (limited) bits of screenshot in the page.
note the ear, perfectly formed to receive an ice-white earphone, and the elegance of the opposable grip of the hands which seems tailor-made to holding the iPod and operating its controls.
I fail to see why BT should use a headset and windows-based software when they already ship an ADSL Ethernet router with some of their internet services.
Surely a digital handset that plugs into an Ethernet port would be a much simpler option, as well as being completely OS-independent?
well why not?: Most of the time in a phone call, you call someone knowing what you want to say then have to negotiate the conversation around them to get to your point.
Much simpler to just make an mp3 file of your point of view, send it and await their considered reply....
While hoards of Slashdotties are slashdotting Novell to get the Eval Version, Masses of Novellites are Novelling slashdot trying to get their new OS on the front page.....
That's a brilliant idea... (speaking as someone who carries an iBoook around to do just that). I've been considering an iPod for a while now, if I could do that it'd save me carrying my laptop with me and I'd buy it.
This isn't the first time someone's announced an iPod in non-standard colours.. nothing came of it last time around!
I don't believe Apple want to issue iPods which aren't in the standard colours as it breaks the consistency of their product line. Black iPods? I'll believe it when I see it.
Various people have spoken about wifi in digital media players (including Apple advertising for wifi engineers to work on future iPods) but this is a real case for it.
A car media player with a Wifi link would be ideal as the owner could then download tracks to it without the need either to walk a laptop out to the car or the car stereo back to the house.
the benefits of being able to browse people's music collections while driving would be entirely incidental;-)
However, hydrogen can be stored indefinitely in a bottle - the internal resistance of a battery is not particularly high and as such it will go flat of its own accord over a matter of weeks unless constantly charged.

At last I can get my Mozilla Thunderbird email onto a mobile device, albeit by porting Thunderbird to it...

It's probably just the usual Winamp & AOL messenger integration, surely?

You are, of course.. Dustin, the administrator of Slashmail.org, whose address also features in slashmail's FAQs and contact pages ?
I'm inclined to take your posting as being somewhat commercial in nature.
I'd pay for gmail over POP3, assuming pricing was similar to MSN Hotmail's offer
so far it beats any other webmail service hands-down and I'm willing to support that with my wallet

Avi Rubin. The only thing more perfect would be if he'd given this report to an online TV station, it could be Rubin.Avi then.
I'm gonna change my name to Mpeg Smith in honour of him.
I was wrong - they've announced it officially. Black iPods.
Apologies.

So how do you stop "anonymous" campaign sites springing up and propagating by spam or google-bomb?
gwbushsucks.cx or similar (made-up URL, not a real site as far as I am aware) might be hard to trace to an identifiable political body
